  1. I have a 45g bowfront FW inhabited by most of the usual community tank suspects. The real stars of the setup are my live plants. I love the look they create and how they promote biofiltering & oxygenation.
  2. Chelle -- your openmindedness is so refreshing! As for the question, definitely with the right person at the right time. Doug
  3. Best wishes for success Skolls -- taking care of yourself is always a good idea, but if it allows you to jump that will be iciing on the cake. (Just don't eat the cake -- that would defeat your objective. )
  4. Well, that trade-off seems worth it. Just wondering... If I surrender my guy card and make some woman very happy, does that make us lesbians? (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) Yes, I realize this very juvenile post will cancel out any sensitivity points that I won with my initial post. But maybe it'll help me keep my guy card!
  5. My most memorable experiences have not involved acrobatics, exotic locations, etc. What rocks my world is having a genuine emotional connection and being totally in synch physically with my partner. Hope this does not put my guy card in jeopardy. Doug
  6. Marc -- I'd like to echo the condolences offered by others on this thread. I hope you find support from family & friends and are able to make your peace with this. Doug
  7. Of course, especially if the downtime is only temporary. Skydiving just isn't that important.
  8. That is fantastic, Nicki. All three of my daughters have done tandems and one (Laura) completed AFF. I was really excited about jumping with Laura, but she kind of spooked herself on her first solo and then acquired a whuffo boyfriend, so she has put jumping aside for a while. Have a blast with your Dad! Doug
  9. peacefuljeffrey -- when you find the woman described in your first post on this thread, please find out if she has a twin sister... Doug

    Suicide

I'd just like to echo the condolences offered by others. As a father, I can only imagine the grief you feel over the loss of Kevin. As someone who has experienced severe depression in the past, it is not completely foreign to me how one could decide to take this path. Of course, I don't know whether that was a factor in this case. Peace to you and to Kevin. Doug
  11. I think Mark is on to something here. Another aspect of the biology influence I've heard about is that humans have a strong drive to pass along their genetic material. It sounds arrogant, but that's what the biologists say. Here's the catch: No matter how many partners a woman has, she always knows that any child she carries has her genetic imprint. But a man cannot be certain that his partner's child is, in fact, his biological offspring. From this perspective, promiscuity by women is condemned by men because it undermines the man's ability to know that his genetic imprint is being passed to future generations.
  12. 2nd decent joke I've seen today on Bonfire. BTW, there was a story in the Washington Post about senior citizen sex workers in Mexico City. Apparently quite a few are still going strong into their seventies and beyond. I admire their stamina and don't pass judgment on consenting adults, but that's gotta be a difficult life.
  13. A common rule of thumb is to value a business at 8x-10x net operating income (revenue minus costs), less the value of any outstanding debt that the buyer becomes liable for.
  14. I was very pleased with the comfort and durability of my Dolphin, as well as the customer service provided by Altico.
  15. Jeth -- That is such a cool story! Congratulations for digging down deep. I periodically reach cross-roads in the sport where I have to decide whether to reach for the next level or accept that whatever I've accomplished up to that point is enough. So far, I've always chosen to continue, and after going through with it that choice has always been rewarded by the kind of positive experience that you described. Doug
  16. I'm 100% down with the firm handshake, even made sure that both my daughters and my son learned to give a proper handshake. However... I'm also against the other extreme of the pseudo-macho vice-grip shakes. I remember attending a conference the same week I got a cast off following a wrist fracture. I could handle a normal firm handshake, but those vice-grips were fu*king excruciating. I know this must be a constant problem for people with arthritis, etc. So please be firm without being a jerk about it.
  17. Please add PrairieDoug to the list. Had a great time last year, but want to meet more dz.commers this time.
  18. Chris, We've never met, but I'd like to echo what peacefuljeffrey said as far as the empathy/support/feeling of helpfulness. Disclaimer for what follows: I'm not a physician. As far as copng with the pain, my take is a little different from some of the other responses. I would suggest using any pain meds as directed by your doctor and deal with possible addiction concerns after the situation with your headaches stabilizes. At the same time you can explore alternative pain treatments and use any that you find effective. Best wishes for putting this behind you. Doug
  19. Why would celibacy be considered a virtue? IMHO, a healthy sex life is part of being truly human.
  20. Wow. Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw last week... "If you aren't appalled, you haven't been paying attention." Doug
  21. The previous replies have provided a lot of good insight and support. All I have to add is... that guy definitely needs a check-up from the neck up!
  22. I don't take the initiative to encourage people to jump. But if someone expresses an interest, I'll share my experience and provide some basic background info (nearby DZs, 1st jump options, etc.) Sometimes a bystander will overhear this discussion and interject that "I could never jump." My reply is always "There's absolutely nothing wrong with that... the sport isn't for everybody."
