  1. Excellent suggestion -- might be just what the doctor ordered! All I need to make it happen is a willing, available, non-hideous partner!
  2. Not sure where it originated, but on more than one occasion I've heard the rule of thumb that a guy should not date a woman younger than half his age plus 7 years. So at 38, your cutoff would be 26. With this rule, the allowable age gap gets bigger as the man gets older.
  3. Not consciously... but maybe that was involved under the surface. It just crossed my mind when the subject of weekend plans came up. But ya know, the right kind of sympathy from the right person might be kind of nice, now that I think about it.
  4. There's some good stuff happening, but unfortunately my weekend will likely NOT include getting laid (again!) This isn't a huge deal -- just been a while since I was with the right person I guess...
  5. Know the company that you're interviewing with -- what product/service they provide, some history, etc. Often this info can be found on a corp. website or annual report. I always ask applicants "Why do want to work here?" It makes a good impression if they can point to specifics instead of saying something generic. This is true even for entry-level admin positions. And oh yeah -- grow a thick skin. Usually you gotta hear a lot of "you're not what we're looking for" before you hear "we'd like to hire you." Good luck!
  6. I'm confused -- would've have thought that if anything the presence of an RSL would tend to delay or prevent riser release (due to added force required to extract reserve pin).
  7. Excellent question. When this happens to me, I try to ask myself if there are any objective reasons not to proceed with the jump. If not, I go ahead with the jump despite any butterfiles/jitters/nerves or whatever. If I grounded myself every time the little voices tried to talk me out of it, I'd have even fewer jumps than I do already.
  8. Skybytch and Other Gear Dealers -- Do you ever tell someone that their design sucks, or at least diplomatically suggest that they might want to consider something less heinous?
  9. My 2 oldest daughters have both jumped. Sindri did a tandem at age 20 and Laura completed AFF at 18. It's fantastic to share the sport with them. Two nieces have also done tandems. The rest of my family thinks I'm crazy.
  10. We are fortunate to have as professional & dedicated an organization as USPA representing us. In addition to group/member services, I love the mag.
  11. Hey greenies, help -- I'm being personally attacked!
  12. That the meat was sold off makes it less wasteful than if the carcass was just allowed to rot on the ground, but IMHO it doesn't change the fact that the primary purpose of killing the bear was to create a tasteless, creepy trophy. That the guy looked for an already dead bear without success is definitely not justification for killing one.
  13. Cool no, disturbing yes. I'm not against hunting in all circumstances, but killing a bear is not justified by the desire to display a trophy. Especially when the trophy is a symbol of something -- man's insatiable material appetite -- so far removed from the values of nature. What a fucking waste.
  14. I never understood the fund in the first place. Terrible things happen every day that nobody gets compensated for. It's called life. Why did the families 9/11 victims deserve such generous compensation when others get zero/zip/nada, or maybe a small payment. Was their pain more deserving than that of the average murder or car accident victim?
  15. I agree with this view, which CanuckinUSA also shared in a thread in Incidents. Skydiving has given me so much, if I felt the need to kill myself I hope I'd find another way to do it that does not disrespect the sport or involve other skydivers.
  16. I know a whuffo couple with young children who insist on taking separate flights when traveling by air. (Gimme a break, but it's their call.) Parents who make such a choice should be aware that while they are reducing the probability that both parents will be killed during the trip, they are doubling the probability that at least one will be killed en route.
  17. To provide a point of reference, I pay $46/month for $100K coverage that explicitly includes skydiving-related claims. (The quote was about 40% lower before I asked for the skydiving coverage.) I also have coverage through the USPA AD&D plan, which is competitively priced. Bottom line: I don't insurance availability/cost should be a deal breaker in most cases.
  18. Vibes on. Made some jumps with Todd at an Airspeed 4-way camp last year -- he was very helpful and approachable. Wishing for a speedy and full recovery.
  19. Was scanning the car radio last night and heard a song by Tim McGraw (country artist) called "Live Like You Were Dying." It mentions skydiving prominently in a positive light. Good PR for the sport. Besides, I've always thought we needed more DZ rednecks. Anybody else heard it/ like it/hate it /couldn't care less?
  20. FYI Frognog, nobody likes a know it all.
  21. Ditto on all the positive comments about the Dolphin container and Altico.
  22. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
  23. Song lyrics: "If I said you have a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" Based on the "10 Things About Women Thread", the most likely response is probably something like "I'm flattered, but not on the first date. Maybe down the road as long as you're not wearing sandals or cheap cologne."
