I would start to worry you were going to rape me, slice my head off, rape me again and then bury my body parts all across the county if I went on one of those kinds of dates. Reminds me of a date in high school... I was shy, quiet and naive as hell. She was new in town so after we ate at Friendly's I wanted to show her the nice view at the river. So drove the dark road to the park, I stopped the car and she made a weird scared sound. Opened the doors and we walked down to the docks. Showed her the view and took her home. I think I may have hugged her at the door. Realized later how much I prolly scared her and never asked her out again. I agree the approach is kinda lame, but asking if they're seeing someone isn't a bad question: * It puts them in the position to tell the truth or lie. Your conscious is clean unless evidence to the contrary mounts up. * It shows you aren't interested in being the "other" or the "transition." Anyone who thinks "they'll be different" is delusional. * It gives them an easy out. Sure, I'd like to know the "real" reason, but does it really matter? This may prevent some trouble later. Maybe shorten it to "If you're not seeing someone..." Of course, this only applies to "cold calls" otherwise do a little "research."

Couple of solutions for that: Passive: "Excuse me, I've got to go to the bathroom. I'll meet you at the car." Stalemate: Just sit there until he flinches. If he doesn't fake a phone call and walk away from the table. Then there's my personal fav: call 'em on it. "You did say this was your treat, right?" A persons reaction to being questioned can be very telling.
