  1. See here for a comprehensive discussion.
  2. OK, second Stupid Q of the day coming up: What does the USA need saving from?
  3. [replyIn a few minutes of digging around on the Web, I couldn't find similar specifications for spring pilot chutes. That definitely doesn't mean they don't exist, only that I can't find them quickly. Eule I found this. From the above link:-
  4. If it wasn't a test.... why would they need good Viz? Even with those early bombs, close would have been close enough. The text below describes the bombing run over Hiroshima. From 26000 feet visibility for this type of bombing run was crucial. (emphasis mine) (Clicky to site)
  5. I see an oxymoron in there somewhere but can't figure it out!
  6. Really? Try again, you are making a choice for other people too. I am so sick and tired of people thinking that the universe revolves around them and that they are smarter and wiser than the industry as a whole. I can't help to wonder how everyone who is nailing Nate for having made his decision can reconcile that with this statement by Billvon :- It seems to me that Nate fits that description perfectly.
  7. This is my take also. While it is technically true that you are always falling towards the centre of the earth, from 10K the difference is negligible. Consider the flock that recently flew from Gibraltar to Africa. The horizontal distance that they flew corresponds pretty much with the distance across the face of the earth that they travelled. (Clearly they flew a bit further in actual distance covered given that they were descending at an angle, but for the purposes of this discussion, that is of little consequence.)
  8. Make Ron's CV a 'sticky' so he doesn't have to type it all the time....
  9. Yeah, I grew up when we called them albums and they were LPs. But album is still not a bad word, because an album is a collection, like a photo album, which an LP never was either (though they were just big enough for PHENOMENAL cover art, something the modern CD simply can't offer). Hmmmm.... I also grew up when they were called albums and they were LP's (the 45's were known as 7-singles). I still have a full set of Beatles albums as well as a full set of Elvis albums on vinyl, both in mint condition. In each instance, the box is marked Collection, and each box contains several vinyl records, each of which (in some cases two) represents an album! You would say, for example, "Who scratched that record" but "Where is my Sgt Pepper's album?". Oi... and I complain about semantics!
  10. I am not in any way medically qualified, but I have done some superficial research for personal reasons. I too have never read of retinal detachment as a direct result of skydiving. The main reason, as far as I have been able to establish, is the attitude of the body relative to the canopy during the decelaration/deployment process. The instant decelaration starts the body is pulled upright as opposed to, for example, a bunjy jump where body is in a head-down attitude. Retinal detachments from bungy jumping have been documented. A more serious risk of the deceleration in skydiving is tearing of the aorta during a rapid opening sequence, but that is a different subject.
  11. While we recognise that this ain't no democracy, I suspect that that is asking a bit much....
  12. Has anyone considered endorsing the culprit's logbook, like some countries do with driver's licences for DUI's etc? Sure, he could rip out the page or 'lose' the book, but if he is that desperate to go jump somewhere else, being on a Bingo list is not going to deter him.
  13. I agree with this sentiment. Saying that someone has been warned and spoken to enough but he just won't listen is, in my opinion, a cop-out. That is like a judge telling a habitual criminal that jail-time doesn't work for him, so he may as well walk free, while the lawyers take bets on how long it is before someone takes him out. The habitual criminal spends time; the habitual DGIT should get/stay grounded.
  14. Having had Mad Bob as a neighbour since he came to power, I can assure you it is not only now. This guy is 10 times worse than Idi Amin ever was and it is only getting worse. His megalomania is growing inversly to his country's demise into abject poverty and misery. At least the Chinese have just turned down his request for a multi-billion dollar loan. Alas.... Mbeki and his quiet diplomacy has approved a 6 billion dollar loan (subject to some conditions). It is going to get a whole lot worse in Zim before it gets better.
  15. When one sends a child to the corner for being naughty, the child normally gets told to sit there and think about what he did wrong and to contemplate the consequences of his actions. This helps to teach the child about 'cause and effect', about responsibility, about accountability, and it helps the child grow up and mature. That's the theory anyway.
  16. Interesting observation. Case in point:- Nelson Mandela is credited with having decided that the African National Congress should deviate from their campaign of non-violence during the early days of apartheid. He was the first commander of Umkontho wi Sizwe, The Spear of the Nation. This was the military wing of the ANC, responsible for many attrocities, including several bomb attacks on innocent civilians. He was considered a dangerous terrorist by many, not only in South Africa. Today he is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and one of the most revered human beings in the world.
  17. Not a lot different to what Ron, Bill, Derek, Ian or any number of other experienced jumpers have said many times over. Very accurate parallel, in my opinion.
  18. Good time to practice those flat (oar) turns?
  19. Local news reports suggest that these explosives were likely concocted at the same time, but that they had gone 'bad' or 'off' (as happens with 'home-made' explosives), with only the detonators actually exploding.
  20. You just won't give it a rest, will you?
  21. Forgive me, but I don't see the relevance?
  22. The original poster has been trying quite deperately to get someone to bite on his feeble 'sinister conspiracy theories' in a number of threads. 'nuff said.
