  1. Its sort of a Christian icon, to me atleast, since when I pass one I tend to think back to when I was quite young (even younger then I am now) at the tender age of 7-9 or so. After church on Sunday quite often we would hit KFC for some take out so we could all eat and enjoy watching Da Boys (the Dallas Cowboys) suck really badly play football. Ah well.... That explains a lot then. When I was at the tender age of 7-9 most South Africans hadn't even heard of KFC nor had we seen any TV! After church we would go to the local Doll House roadhouse for burgers and milk shakes and for enjoyment we watched the seagulls steal peoples' chips (french fries) from their plates. Now.... that begs the question "Should Doll House roadhouses or seagulls be my new Christian icon?" Decisions... decisions...

    Kamakazi!

I don't understand why people use the word coward to describe suicide bombers - they may be a lot of things, but coward isn't one of them. In my view, there is little difference between Japanese suicide bombers and any other suicide bomber. I described their acts as cowardice based on the way they perpetrate them. Yesterday's killers deliberately mingled with a crowd of innocent people when they detonated their explosives. The kamakazi pilots wore the Japanese uniforms, flew in aircraft showing distinct identification markings and only attacked military targets.

    Kamakazi!

QuoteKamakazis QuoteIs it brave to kill innocent civilians because you think that since they are infidels you are going directly to heaven? Quote I suspect you are talking about an entirely different group of people in an entirely different war here?

    Kamakazi!

The cowardice displayed yesterday by the two suicide bombers is clearly demonstrated by the way they executed their deed. To my knowledge Kamakazi pilots only attacked the military targets of their enemy - most certainly never their own people. In the context WWII, I too think they were brave.
  5. I don't know about blasphemy, but as a Christian, KFC is certainly no icon of any kind to me. Perhaps it is a symbol of Americanism, capitalism, tasty chicken, expensive take-outs, Western decadence, a need for oil, but a Christian icon? Nope.
  6. To answer such a question, one would have to become an expert on the chromosomal differences as well as the social upbringings of blacks in our society. To me, that is the most sensible opinion thus far. In South Africa we do have the historical problem of apartheid and so on, but I don't believe we will see a significant change in Black participation even in the next 50 years. One only has to look at other sports: There are not many Black Olympic swimmers. There are several superior Black middle and long distance runners. Most team sports such as baseball, soccer and cricket attract participants from accross the spectrum. Basketball attracts people with a distinct physical advantage. Heavy contact sports such as American gridiron and Rugby don't attract many Asian participants. The Asians are far superior at badminton and table tennis. It is not a race issue. It is based on culture, social backround, physical attributes and ability. Ultimately it's in the genes!
  7. Yep, the same guy - Sneuman (sp?) RIP
  8. Many jumpers who have skydived for any length of time at a C182 DZ will have been subjected to negative G's on the first load on a Sunday morning, when you can feel the whole of last night's wings party filling up your cheeks. This is usually funny after the fact. But what about the real humourless pilots from hell? One pilot at a DZ I used to frequent was a brilliant Porter flier. (I do not recall ever landing before him.) However, he simply had no patience. He would land, taxi to boarding point and give the next load about 20 seconds to emplane before starting his takeoff down the runway again. I saw jumpers (having dropped goggles or helmets and such) stranded at boarding point more than once. He also abhorred anyone farting in his plane, and I remember him taking a full load back down after two visiting jumpers had been trying to outdo each other and fumigated the rest of us in the plane! Any stories?

  10. And my verbal score on the SAT was 640 too....... And to think I used to be a cunning linguist. Given the subject matter, perhaps 'intensive' is an appropriate Freudian slip?
  11. Golfing great Gary Player used to say : "The more I practise, the luckier I get."
  12. On the other hand, the PF AAD will put a very quick stop to farting in the aircraft!
  13. I agree 100%. In South Africa, while the legal drinking age is 18 (and driving age), just about anyone who's 15/16 can walk into a bar and get a drink. Why, cause no one really cares. It's not taboo. The result I found to be exactly like you said. A LOT get the stupidity out of their system before they can drive. I know I did. Blues, Ian Ian, while I agree with both yourself and John in principle, underage drinking has become a major problem here. As a matter of fact, in this morning's Citizen there is an article about just this subject. I think most sensible people will agree that it is going to be impossible to ban alcohol altogether. As with everything else, including wingloadings, the solution lies in education. In the case of substance abuse, that education should start in the home. As you pointed out, no one cares, and in my opinion that is where the problem lies. Many parents all over the Western world have abdicated their roles as primary educators and have left that responsibility up to the teachers, cops, shopping mall attendants and bartenders.
  14. I'd suggest aerated ice, which is even less dense because you added stuff (air) to it. Like SNOW. SNOW on a SLOPE then.
  15. Whem my ex did her FJC we were using a C182 and the SL exit was standing with one foot on the wheel and the other flying, hands hanging on to the strut. On GO she pushed herself off (instead of just hopping off), falling into her SL, which dislodged the reserve pin. Her main deployed ok but while doing control checks she noticed this plastic bag dangling over her arm. She promptly threw it away and in the process caused her Reserve to deploy. Fortunately we were still using round reserves and she landed safely with both. So she had reserve ride as well as a two-out. She never jumped again after that.
  16. Agreed. Also, in my opinion, the fact that their missiles may or may not be able to reach US territory is not very relevant. If the US were to prepare for an invasion, all NK would have to do (if they were indeed prepared to actually use nukes at all) would be to aim their nukes at Tokyo, Taipei, Beijing, Hong Kong and say to the US: "Your move".
  17. Looking at the 'reserve.jpg' picture, there is some yellowish material visible directly to the left of the 'kink' in the canopy, where the 'lineover' appears. Was the PC the same colour as the slider?
  18. Quote(Just realised when I wrote that, again we are trusting the politicians to do the right thing, took the wind out my sails that did, hehe) Quote That is the single most important factor. Corrupt politicians. Nepotism. Croniesm. Fatcats looking out for themselves, their starving countrymen be damned. The King of Swaziland is about to take his 13th bride. He has more palaces than the entire British royal family. He has just bought one of the most expensive cars in the world while almost a quarter of his people rely on food-aid to survive. Read more about Swaziland here and more on Africa in general here. Some excerpts from the above links: Most African nations suffer from military dictatorships, corruption, civil unrest and war.... The article neglects the role of failed development policies by multilateral institutions and claims that "Africans are poor because their leaders keep them that way." This Financial Times article comments on corrupt joint ventures between oil multinationals and the authoritarian Equatorial Guinean government. The majority of the population lives in deep poverty, even though the country ranks sixth in the world in income per person. In previous elections, he (Mugabe) has withheld food, to create popular desperation, then "bought" political support by exchanging provisions for votes. Unless the debt-relief is closely linked to some checks and balances, it will be to no avail and it will only serve to make the fatcats fatter.
