  1. Couldn't even fake the lisp, eh? (No s in that sentence)
  2. Let's rather not turn this into yet another guns thread. I am more curious as to the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the way jury selection/manipulation etc was portrayed in the movie.
  3. The stated reason is just that. Remember the stated reason for invading Iraq in the first place? Talk about irony!
  4. Fair enough. However, for an 'uninvolved' South African, the scenario change was no big deal. I am aware (especially through spending a lot of time on DZ.Com
  5. Absolutely. I also stated that I lived through a long period of terrorism, saw how they operated, saw the effects of their attrocities and fought against them. No surprises there. As I suggested earlier, each terrorist action needs to be treated on it's own merits. In this instance I believe that is what happened. No government is so naive as to trust terrorists. This has nothing at all to do with the honour or integrity of terrorists. This a government doing what they believe is the prudent thing to do. Not unlike the US/UK coalition believing that at the time it was prudent to invade Iraq. With hindsight, it would be easy for me to suggest that the coalition was naive, but I like to think I am more mature and intelligent than that.
  6. That was what I was thinking. With the eternal debate about capital punishment, if this stuff really happens, is it surprising that innocent people are getting nailed. It seems that 'beyond reasonable doubt' could be interpreted as 'my jury advisor was better than your's'. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie though. Very interesting plot.
  7. How about insulting each other by 'omission'? There was a well known South African parliamentarian who declared during a session that half of the members were idiots (or sheep or asses). When the Speaker insisted on a point of order that he retracted the statement, he complied by stating that "Half of the members were not idiots.
  8. I saw Runaway Jury last night and I was intrigued by the 'behind the scenes' scrutinising, background checking and manipulation of the (potential) jurors. Just how close to real life was this movie? Especially the Hackman role. Does it really happen? Ps. We don't have the jury system in South Africa, so I have nothing to go on.
  9. It is not elementary at all and can in no way be compared to a child's tantrum. The child is not out to deliberately harm or extort you. Each and every terrorist attrocity, threat and action has to be evaluated on it's own merits. It is simplistic to reason that by the Phillipines having pulled out, they gave in to the terrorists. In this instance their presence was very limited and their withdrawal is likely to have little or no effect on the situation. Terrorists, by definition, terrorise. They do this for a variety of reasons depending on their aims: intimidation, break down of morale, publicity for their cause and so on. The more gruesome their efforts the more of the above they accomplish. Having lived through a very long period of terrorism and having actively fought against terrorists, I have learnt that no country has ever won a war against terrorists. At the end of the day what is needed is communication & negotiation. There is of course also the old adage of One man's terrorist....
  10. You mean like CRW exits, where there are (at the very least) two jumpers exiting in quick succession and dumping very early?
  11. You have bears by the case load in Kentucky????? I bet they drink beer too!! I find my self frequently checking my handbrake and gear lever while waiting at an intersection - just like I would do several handle checks on run-in.
  12. There is a lovely photograph of Lance with team Postal in my local daily this morning. I think he is one of the world's greatest sportsmen. Coming back from serious cancer and achieving what he has is an inspiration to many!
  13. QuoteI can not stand the rubbish. It is on a par with those ridiculous infomercials.... But wait, that's not all!!! If you call 555-trash now.... we will give you a year's supply of Professional Wrestling tapes..... absolutely free!
  14. Interesting article on CNN From the article:- Her conclusion: there will be so many problems with the more than 100,000 paperless voting terminals to be used in the November presidential election that the fiasco will dwarf Florida's hanging chad debacle of 2000. "We have a train wreck that's definitely going to happen," Harris said. "We have conflict of interest, we've taken the checks and balances away, and we know the votes are already being miscounted fairly frequently. This is going to be huge." And just to balance things - from the same article:- Critics say Harris, author of "Black Box Voting: Ballot Tampering in the 21st Century," is a fear-mongering grandstander and a presumptuous conspiracy theorist. The prime target of one investigation -- voting equipment maker Diebold Inc. -- says her antics undermine democracy.
  15. Not being able to sing can hardly be attributed to stupidity. Marking a ballot incorrectly on the other hand....
  16. This is, in my opinion, a fallacy perpetuated only by skydivers. That would be great, if it were true. Unfortunately, what happened after the Hilder death last July 4 suggests otherwise......... .......Everyone knows what a crazy, suicidal sport skydiving is. I would like to see any evidence that the police were influenced by this perception. The only time one sees statements like your's above is in the tabloid press and on skydiving forums. The general public do not share that view.
  17. So what? I thought it was very clever (being an 'oldish' man with a bit of combat experience myself).

  19. This is, in my opinion, a fallacy perpetuated only by skydivers. Just look at the hype in 'whuffo world' regarding former Pres Bush's & Chuck Norris' jumps this past weekend. From what I have seen, the general public were impressed and applauded. Even here in South Africa folk are talking about it, and in a positive way. This particular incident got some press coverage over here and not one single person that spoke to me about it had anything to say about death wishes. The common theme was "What drives one to commit suicide?"
  20. I love this one too : Dressed in a black jump suit, an altimeter strapped to his left wrist, the former pilot recited an old slogan from his days in the cockpit. "Ceiling and visibility unlimited. That's where my life is today."
  21. Arguing with Ron about jump numbers.....
