  1. I was watching the History channel program on the Avenger and it's role in the Pacific during WW2 last night. Fascinating program- fascinating airplane. If one were to take away the rear gunner's turret, that aircraft would look almost exactly like the Harvard which was the South African Air Force's primary trainer for many years after the war. Is it the same plane? There are still several flying Harvards in SA and it is not unusual for me to hear those very distinctive engines early on a Sunday morning as two or three Harvards fly over my house in close formation.
  2. Our money bills are made so that they do not burn or decompose very easily. Was that not the case with American bills back then?
  3. Are you talking about the author or one of the regular posters in SC?
  4. Mark, as I understand it, a typical tour of active duty for the US military is a year. Do you think it is worthwhile/ practical considering shorter tours - say six months? Does the US have the man power to be able to do this? During the war in Namibia/Angola we only did three month stints once, maybe twice a year. Granted, it was a low intensity conflict compared to Iraq or Afghanistan, but our desertion rates were very low. We did have many conscientuous objectors though. Another thing - do the people on active duty get financial reprieve of any kind? For example, we were allowed to freeze repayments (car, house, etc.) for the duration of the tour.
  5. What's the point; what possible intelligence could be obtained from him? More than could be gained from you. I KNOW for a fact, his clearance is substantally higher than yours. Whhhooooooosssssshhh.....
  6. A bit of research (even just a profile check) would not go amiss. What are you implying? I am not implying anything.

  8. Here are two quick&dirty attempts. Someone with more time on their hands could get quite creative.
  9. it's the same ODE we (Aussies) use... Same here in SA. I met a WW2 veteran yesterday. We were both wearing our poppies. He came over and shook my hand, thanking me for remembering. He added that it was nice to see some of the 'young' ones wearing poppies. I just smiled politely - I served in the military in various ways for more than 20 years!
  10. I was wearing my poppie yesterday and came across a WW2 veteran wearing his. He walked over, shook my hand warmly and thanked me for 'remembering'. He had tears in his eyes. Indeed.
  11. This is one of the most honest, sincere, eloquent, grammatically correct and non-confrontational posts ever posted on DZ.Com. Bravo. Stay strong.
  12. Going by some of the responses above, John's bait seems to work just fine! I am going bass fishing tomorrow with my newly acquired baitcaster rig. Perhaps the prof can give me some pointers.
  13. Do you have the number of CCW holders per 100K? That would make the above comparison a lot more meaningful. How would it make it more meaningful? Well, say for example that in 2005 there where 60/100k holders, then that would suggest that a very large percentage of them were involved in crime (unless I am totally misunderstanding the numbers.) I am not disputing anything, just curious. I can't provide similar numbers for any major city in SA, but as most folks know, the violent crime rate here is of the highest in the world and we too have vociferous anti-gun lobbies, with a government seeming hell-bent on disarming the populace.

Bryan Habana. I was rooting for him to be World Cup player of the tournament, but it seems they don't have such an award.
  17. Zia ul-Haq, of course, is the General who had Benazir Bhutto's father executed. Indeed.

How about IRB Player of the year?
  19. While I have always been a fan of Benazir Bhutto, I was very disappointed with her during an interview I saw on Sky this morning. She was asked if she was not afraid of an assassination attempt and she 'bravely' said no, she will not let that stop her. However she must have known about the huge reception awaiting her and completely ignored the danger to all these people. As it turns out, around 130 people were killed! Ps. to John et al : Pps. to all those who have this misunderstanding of the position of women in Muslim countries : *** Ms Bhutto and her entourage were moving slowly through a crowd of hundreds of thousands of supporters. Not bad for a 'lowly' woman, eh? Quotes:- BBC News
  20. A little girl was sitting in her classroom in England when her teacher walked in and started talking about how proud she is to be English and how wonderful it is to be an England supporter. The teacher then asked everyone who supported England to put up their hand. Every hand in the class besides one went up. This surprised the teacher and so she asked the little girl why her hand wasn't up. "Well," said the little girl, "because I don’t support England." Even more surprised, the teacher asked her who she supported. "I support the Springboks", she replied. Now a bit irritated, the teacher asked the little girl why she supported the Springboks. "My mom supports the Springboks, and my dad supports the Springboks, so I support the Springboks." The teacher looked at the little girl and with a smirk asked: "Well, if your mom was an idiot and your dad was an idiot, what would you be?" The little girl looked up at her teacher, smiled and replied: "An England supporter!"
  21. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me....
  22. Is this not the point where you say "But, but... I never inhaled swallowed"? Alternatively, you could also say "The people should not misunderestimate the effects of Tequila".
  23. Yeah, he really enjoyed scoring that second try and he now equals Jonah Lomu's record for tries at the WC (8).
