Being a Responsible Seller
SkydiveNFlorida replied to karenmeal's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, while 400 jumps may seem a drop in the bucket to some, others who train and spend time with these people may have a different opinion than your own about what they are qualified to fly. You have every right to not sell your gear to whomever you choose, but just because someone doesn't meet your jump number standard doesn't necessarily mean that they need to be flying a boat, either. I'm guessing for one that you would not sell me the canopy I currently own. Brian Germain, however, spent time training me in canopy control and was confident enough in my skills to sell me said canopy. And, I am confident enough in my skills to fly it, so even if some may feel that i'm pushing too hard by jumping a smallish canopy, their opinions don't necessarily hold much weight with me since they aren't the ones who have spent time training me, watching me, etc. In the end, like I said, you are of course free to do as you please with your stuff. But, I just wanted to make the point that just because you don't think someone is qualified, doesn't necessarily mean that is the case. Hoping this isn't taken harshly, because it isn't meant that way at all. Just sharing another POV. -
Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important

I'm crossing my fingers for it! I hear though that most who get accepted from one are denied from the other... I hope that isn't true. -A -

Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Thanks for the info, Wendy. I tried looking at UCLA Alumni, but I can't see to find what you're saying to look for (but maybe i'm not looking hard enough!). I'll try again next week if I don't get into Berkeley. I'm going to work my hardest to keep a good GPA, while actually learning the material. ChE is a rigorous program (as i'm sure you know) and I think they wipe my GPA clean (currently it is 3.73) before I get there:( As far as ultimate goals, i'm pretty sure I want to go to grad school, but I want to leave my options open. Thanks!! -A -
Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire

Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Well, you're a braver soul than I! Hell, I get cold on the ride to altitude in South Florida. I am looking between GA Tech and UCLA right now. UCLA's department hasn't been around as long and is ranked 22 by US News I think. Georgia Tech is ranked a little higher, but looking at them both somehow UCLA seems more appealing. I like the focus of their research, and I would think they would have better research but who knows. I know UT Austin is supposed to have an excellent program, too, and i'm still waiting on them. But, I wonder if it is more petro chemical based, where UCLA is focused with energy and nanotech which is cool:) -A -
Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important

I agree, but unfortunately I can't be sure which are the best for that because I don't know anyone at any of the schools:( -A -
Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Thanks, Paige. I will let you all know when I decide for sure:) Thanks also for your vote! -A ** just so we're all on the same page, tho, all of the schools I applied to have accredited departments by AICHE, just some are ranked higher than others according to US News, a valuable ranking system to the best of my knowledge. -

Choosing a University for Undergrad: What is important
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
In choosing a school for undergrad studies, what is more important to you? I am still waiting to hear from Berkeley which is a prestigious school with an excellent Chemical Engineering department. But, if I don't get into Berkeley, I need to chose from the schools I did get into (which are also good.) I'm leaving the state. So, counting tuition as equal, what do you feel are the most important things? I'm allowing multiple answers, but try to pick only one or two of the choices as being most important. Thanks! Angela -
Would you jump without your AAD
SkydiveNFlorida replied to airdweller's topic in Safety and Training
When you make the decision to use an AAD, you are making that decision so that in the case of emergency, you might be saved. If you send it off to the mfg, you should consider why you chose to have one in the first place before you decide to jump without one. I was convinced to buy one by my boyfriend after some serious discussion about things that could go wrong in freefall, and people who have passed out after being kicked in the head and corked on, etc, and woken up in a tree because their cypres saved them. Personally, I would have to think about jumping w/o a cypres for freefly as it is risky which is why I bought the cypres. I'd probably stick to hop n pops for a while if my cypres were out... it'd give me some needed canopy time anyhow:) -A -
Being a Responsible Seller
SkydiveNFlorida replied to karenmeal's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Agreed. I know people like to flame me about my comment, but truly I cannot take it back. I am not anyone's mommy. If someone approaches me asking if I think the container/canopy is right for them with x#jumps, etc, i'd give my opinion. If I knew a jumper to be unsafe or to have what I consider too low a number of jumps for some gear, I would likely make a call there... but you must understand that I downsized quite quickly, and my cutoff point with selling gear might be very different than yours (yours is used generally here, not aimed at anyone in particular.) That said, the girl I sold my gear to did ask some questions, which I answered honestly. I got that container with the pd126 when I had 20+ jumps, I have flown the reserve, and I have flown the main she was putting in there which she was already flying. So, I gave my opinion based on my experience. I cannot say what is right for someone else, only for myself, and fwiw she seemed very safety conscious, had her rigger check the container, was jumping a Spectre 150, asked lots of questions. But, if she didn't ask a bunch of questions, and I didn't know her jump numbers, I still would have sold her the container because I bought the container when I had less jumps than her. As far as selling a main, I can't say for certain that I wouldn't ask a person a few questions first before selling because I am not sure yet about that. But, I don't feel obligated to do so, and certainly feel no obligation to call someone's dropzone for stats. People need to be responsible for themselves. If they aren't responsible enough to ask questions, get training, and make responsible purchases, then I probably won't be the death of them, their own stupidity might but I feel no responsibility for that. Wasn't it not too long ago that a member here claimed to have been sought out by another and lost his job as a result? I think that is reason enough not to post all of your info. Personally, I really don't care if someone has a problem with the lack of info in my profile. If that stops you from reading my posts, then so be it. I lurk and post on here for entertainment, not to be thought of as a major resource for information and I certainly don't claim to have "all of the answers to the universe." -A -A

Paraconcepts! They gave me the best price on my container/reserve, and also in a seperate order my main. Not to mention they don't mind my thousand questions. Great service, great price, and out of state so no sales tax! -A

Lets see. I get in, put on my jacket so I don't freeze. I open up some remote sessions for the mainframe computers. Check job queues, release as need be, etc... but mostly just press F5. Then, I open the internet, and toggle back now and then to repeat checking queues. Eventually I get the motivation to do homework, so I set up my books and study, occassionally pressing F5. Then, I pack up, write a turnover of all the jobs that have completed on my shift, failures, problems, etc... and go on my way. It doesn't get any more boring than this, but it's a great job for a student!! -A

You might want a chemical engineer to help you out with that.... see me in 2 years -A
