How about juices that are purees? Why are they worse than just fruit? If the contents of the juice is 100% fruit, why the diff? -A

Not all who are heavier than you eat twinkies for dinner. But, some people are just too thin. Matter of fact, too little body fat is unhealthy, just like too much is. I saw a toothpick at B&N yesterday that made me stare. If she didn't have an eating disorder, then she has hyperthyroidism or something. I have no idea how much you weigh, or your body condition, i'm just responding to the post. Being thin is not necessarily bad, but it isn't necessarily good, either. My aunt is thin and her cholesterol is +300. I'm not skinny but i'm not fat and certainly don't eat twinkies for dinner (or ever!) and my cholesterol is 225. -A

Oops, I voted before I read. I landed "off" but still on the airport in the Keys twice. Well, actually, one wasn't "on" the airport, but right beside it on the sidewalk, and I would have easily walked the one minute back in, but a truck pulled up on the streed and offered me a ride:D Very friendly locals! So, discounting those, i've never landed off off. Guess i've ruined your poll now. -A

WTF?? Men are not an under-represented group??...
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Very true. However hard I try and however much I think I form my own opinions, I am still a victim of the permeation of societal views. I like to think that for the most part this isn't the case, but maybe in this instance it is. That would be nice. It would also be nice if all people felt that women were equivalent and we didn't have to deal with men thinking that women are not qualified for the positions they are in, or got into a school with lesser grades than they so it must be AA. But, in this instance, I do feel I was wrong about this scholarship. It is not AA or anti-AA, it is a group trying to recruit members, something I neglected to realize coming from a non-fraternity/sorority community college. I guess that is where we differ. You are certain that this is something that should be over with, and I am not sure that we are really to that point. On one hand this breeds the attitude that women/(insert minority here) are not as qualified for their jobs, are not as smart, etc. But, on the other hand, this stuff isn't going to end right away when AA goes away, either. But, I suppose that sometimes you have to give to get and maybe doing away with it altogether might be a good way to go. It is a shame but I meet so many women down here that lack any real goals, and who seem to live for their husbands, or feel second to them. So, it makes me think this type of treatment might still be necessary. Sorry to have babbled, that got pretty long. And, running the risk of overloading the post with estrogen(), for the most part I find that your posts tend to be well thought out and thought provoking. Thank you for your contribution to the thread. Take care, Angela. -
HOW committed to skydiving are YOU?
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Thanks for all of the replies and votes. I do love to jump, (ok, mostly I love to swoop.) But when I get too busy (I'm taking an organic chemistry class that is condensed right now, and am planning on moving soon, getting loans for school... the list goes on) I don't find myself forcing it. I guess I eventually found that to me this was fun, not life. When I have time for fun, this is one of the things that I like to do (it is the most fun thing I do in fact!) When I don't, well, you gotta take care of business. Skybill, your story is cool. The reason I put the team option up is I was wondering if a lot of the devotees competed, but that doesn't seem the case. I could definitely see spending a lot more time at the dz if I had more time (and money!) to spend... but, for now, my money is limited and my time even moreso. Thanks for voting! Just seeing where everyone else fell in. Seems a wide range. -A -

Are you STILL having problems with your reading and comprehension skills, Jen? I haven't even applied for women-only scholarships, I mentioned that I wasn't much for affirmative action. However, I have SEEN that I am treated differently because of my sex, and I DO keep on working regardless. But, what I said was that I can SEE why these things are out there for minorities, women, etc. Women are still not equal to men as far as society is concerned. It'd be great to give them incentive to reach further. I am sorry you have such a problem the opinions of others and constantly seek to insult people. I don't feel I need to "get over myself" at all. I do not think ask for anything extra for my gender, but I don't want to be excluded because of it, either. My problem with a scholarship for men is that it is exclusive of the group that is already behind in big business, politics, etc., etc. Like I said, i'm not much for affirmative action, but I try to understand why these types of scholarships are out there. For this one, I really could not see why. I don't think my not seeing this warrants a "get over yourself." -A -

I know there should be other poll options, but it is getting too long. I am wondering how long it took your initial jump buzz to wear off, or if it never did. Personally, when I started this it was all I wanted to do with my time & money. Now, although I still love to jump, i'd rather have a better balance in life. I *could* afford to jump much more, but I would rather not spend every dime I have doing it. Also, I have school, work, and more pressing matters, and I like to spend a day of my weekend relaxing a bit and doing weekend stuff instead of skydiving before I go back to a busy week. I see posts from a lot of newer jumpers and I remember their enthusiasm, but it is just a memory now. Like I said, I love to jump, too, but I also love other aspects of life and I guess I eventually found a balance. It took me about 300 jumps. So, where do you fall in? -A -
Good. Not even a jumper girl is going to want someone who is selfish. I wouldn't date anyone with the above life philosophies. If you can't give up a weekend to do something other than jumping, and you truly find that you would rather be completely dead ass broke after jumping, then most girls are probably out of the question. But, i'm sure there are some that have the same philosophy, so maybe, by chance, you'll hook up. I'm a jumper, and if I were single I wouldn't date you. I'm sure you'll be able to do this no problem. Most people don't realize that their lifes goals clash for quite some time. But, you will probably need to give up at least one weekend to find one. I met my skydiving boyfriend in the sport and am very happy! :D He loves jumping, probably more than me, and i'm cool with that. If I can't go out, i'm fine if he does, but he knows I require at least one of this weekend days. And, he doesn't live like a hobo due to spending every dime on skydiving. The key to life is balance.

Have you payed off your college loans?

That's the spirit, rack it up!! Good for you, I love animals. I thought about going into Marine Bio but the money wasn't good enough so I decided i'd keep and explore reefs in my free time when I have more money. Veterinary work pays better, that's for sure. -A -

SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
For those who felt their options were missing in this poll, I left out I just got out of college & I didn't go to college for a reason. If you just got out, you likely haven't payed your loans and you haven't had enough time to make a judgement on whether you feel you'll be in debt forever. And, this is a thread about how long it took to pay college loans, so those who didn't attend college are exempt from the poll. Thanks for the replies. Wow! A lot of people are in debt. Missy, is it just Nova that costs that much or all med schools? I know you will be a great doctor, are you specializing? I didn't vote because i'm still in school, but I have taken loans and will be probably be about 45k in debt when i'm done with my undergrad... have no idea on grad school. Kudos to those who worked through college! I don't think i'll be able to handle that for the remainder, but I did work through the first 3 years of undergrad... I still have about 2-3 years left, so it'll be a 6 year undergrad degree as is. I have decided to live on loans for the last 2-3 years in order to focus on what is important. Angela. -

WTF?? Men are not an under-represented group??...
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
I have gotten some well thought out replies, thanks guys. I didn't realize this was what it was about. Thanks for explaining. I can see why this would be limited to men in that case. I was just looking through the scholarships and there seem to be very many geared to minorities/ under-represented groups. I also see others that are merit based, so they are out there. I am also a victim of the loan game. I don't qualify for Pell, but i've saved none of the riches that I earned last year after paying my pesky bills and jumping. I got one of the scholarships from the campus, but it is given to men and women alike for merit and need. A lot of the women ones focus on those who are much into community service, and who are going into a service-based industry, etc... so I wouldn't qualify anyhow. I didn't see any sorority scholarsips, but i'm not going to join one anyhow I don't think.. they tend to preach oneness of the group, god stuff, etc, and i'm not into that. Thanks for the reply. Angela. -
That is not true at all... the worst drivers live in FLORIDA! I always figured it must be so, and then my boyfriend who is from Chicago came and thought the same thing. I am almost hit by another vehicle at least once a week. And, I don't even drive in traffic hour. -A

I think you guys are mistaking a discussion for some type of anger venting thread. Maybe it was the WTF in the title that set it off, I don't know. But, this was a DISCUSSION NOT AN ARGUMENT. But since this isn't possible without people telling me i'm laughable and that I mustn't shave, I think i'm not going to bother with any more responses. So, go ahead, use it as your ANGER VENTING thread if that is what you need. I have said my piece. Later, hairy and funny -

"Accepted by who? Men tend to think you are not as capable of what? " Basically, it seems to me that women have to prove themselves a lot more than men do when it comes to math and science. Maybe i'm wrong, but this is the feeling I get when I walk into these classes... the vibe from my male counterparts is generally that I don't belong there. That usually goes away after the first exam or two when i'm keeping pace with everyone else and asking questions in class that others find interesting. I have also been told by many people that going into school for engineering as a woman is harder, but since i'm not a man I admittedly can't make a fair comparison. I can see this. But, I guess it still feels a little upsetting to be excluded; especially since i'm not joined by many other excluded groups. When I see scholarships for Jewish people I am not as upset. Not sure why, maybe since there are so many other groups being excluded, not just atheist, I am not so upset. I agree to an extent. If it really seems like a group is struggling, then I guess I can accept the fact that people are offering them more help. I suppose I see it like financial aid to the poor... I am not rich, but at least I have credit, so I understand that people who have less money than me get more help. If it has been proven that in a certain field there aren't as many black people going to school for it because they have less exposure, I can understand incentives being given to help bring them in. I don't understand just general woman scholarships, women in engineering, yes.. women, no. ( I think there are about equal counterpart of men/women in colleges.) I don't understand why men should get their own scholarship exclusive of women... especially given that they are typically better off and more well supported in academics throughout their lives. -A -

OK, you know what... You don't agree. Fine. But to come on here and call me "amusing" like i'm a fucking circus because I think this isn't right is ridiculous and wrong. I expressed an opinion, no one has taken the time to read any of why I feel it is justified and actually argue those points. And, if you got some military scholarship, good for you. I'd never join the military personally, but if you feel the need to serve them then I think that they SHOULD give you something. I'm not going to bother arguing with you as you are terribly narrow-minded. I posted here to argue a point. When someone has taken the reasons I feel I am justified in my views and has actually argued against them, I will listen. But, you have not done that. You have come into this thread only to bash, and not to debate. You answered to nothing I replied to you with, you simply restated yourself in an even ruder manner when I replied to you. Why I bothered with this reply i'm not sure, it isn't like you read a damn thing. I will be certain not to bother in the future. -A -

Hey, i'm sorry you got turned down from a school for someone you feel was less qualified. Don't always assume that everything is based on merit, though... sometimes they give admission to people based on life circumstances (did the person have it rough, and still make it through with good grades?, etc) So, don't assume it was just because she was female! -A -

SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
I'm not sure why you think scholarships are only supposed to be for under-represented groups. My company gives away a few scholarships a year to children of its employees. Do you see that as being inappropriate as well? Blues, Dave No, those children are likely from different backgrounds, and that scholarship gives a wide variety of people a chance. How about if this was for only those qualifying to be members of the Arian Race? -A -

What is a Rush Tool? Yes, I agree, there are plenty of schlarships for those that are not under-represented but rather are based on merit, etc... so why the need for a male-only scholarship? Would you feel any differently if this were only opened to white males? -A -
WTF?? Men are not an under-represented group??...
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
I'm not much for affirmative action... but since i'm not black and have ancestors that endured slavery. I am not hispanic, myself or family having arrived here a mere generation ago with nothing. I am not jewish, having family that lived through the holocaust, etc... so, because I don't understand it, I tend not to bitch bout it. Being a woman, I see that it is harder for us to be accepted. Men tend to think that i'm not as capable because i'm a woman, and as a child I was not exposed to anything science, etc... so I can see why scholarships out there for women going into science and engineering are a good thing. But, males have not been oppressed to the best of my knowledge. So, i'm trying to understand why this scholarship is not opened to everyone, but only men. As a man you are eligible for a number of non-exclusive, financial or merit based scholarships. I don't see why this should be exclusive. I am considering applying to it! Angela.
