Proving Native American Heritage... where to start?
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
I found my great-grandfather on the Dawes rolls. Now i'd have to prove i'm related, etc, right? thx!!@ Angela. :D -
Thanks!! Ok, we're gonna be driving up on Saturday the 12th and will leave sometime the evening of Monday the 14th. I figure we'll be able to check out the town Sat night, all day Sunday. Then on Monday morning we'll check out of our hotel and go see the campus. There is a campus tour at like 11am, how are they? Would it be better to just walk around? I would gladly accept the skydiver tour of GA Tech if anyone will be avail on Monday the 14th. And, suggestions on where to go on the weekend to get a locals experience would be great. I want to take the public transport at some point, too. Thoughts? Thanks! :D Angela.

Proving Native American Heritage... where to start?
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
It has been suggested to me that I may qualify for scholarships based on my 1/8 Cherokee heritage. It is on my father's side, and we don't speak. I am not sure how to go about working on this. I know my grandmother's name, and she was 1/2. I do not have her ss#, tho. I believe a family member must be registered, but I don't know where to start (or end for that matter). If anyone can guide me please pm me. Thanks. Angela. -
Well, i'm glad to hear there are things to do there. Not that i'll have time to do them between studying and studying, lol! I know it'll be rough, I don't plan to give up. What the hell will I do with all of this math and science then I will let you and Becky know when we'll be able to make it up so that we can arrange some sort of campus tour with you. That rocks! Thanks! :D Angela

:D You are so cute, Brie! It will be awesome to hang out with you and Katie! You are the booty smacka! lol! I will definitely send you and katie a pm when I know the dates we'll be able to make it out. Wow! Thanks to everyone for the replies. I feel so welcome. Vinny, I'm prepared to work my ass off, I fully expect it to be hard. I will have a good number of transfer credits, thankfully, too (so far 58 are transferrable as per Tech, but this semester isn't over.) Pyke, i'll let you know what I decide in the end. I am not planning on UT really at this point. I think it'll be between GA Tech, UCSD & UC Berkeley, but probably between the first two because Berkeley, while a great school, it way expensive. Thanks:D Angela.

Thanks, Becky! I will be coming in as an undergraduate transfer. I was afraid of the out-of-state thing. I will check with UC and see if they have the same deal. Yeah, I heard it is a tough school, but I want the best bang for my buck. You are an under grad senior? How do you like your teachers? The general vibe at the school? What is your major? I have never been to Atlanta, but I will see if I can get the time off of work to get up there and visit, around the time of the Dublin boogie, I'd be very grateful if you'd show us around (my boyfriend would be moving with me.) That is a great offer, thanks!! I'll pm you once I know if we can get the time off of work. Thanks everyone! More replies are definitely welcome! Tell me what you think of Atlanta and the school with compare to Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD for Engineering. thx!!! Angela

I was admitted to GA Tech for Fall '05. I am still waiting to hear back from a few schools. So far i've been admitted to GA Tech and Rose-Hulman and i'm waiting to hear back from UCSD, UCLA, UC Berkeley and UT Austin. At this point, it is looking like Rose-Hulman is out because they are in a very remote area and very $$. And, Berkeley is awefully expensive, too. Anyhow, what can you tell me about Atlanta? Would you choose GA Tech out of these schools? My major is Chemical Engineering. How is Atlanta? Is the school located in a major area or is it on the outskirts? Could I possibly sell my car and bike it or rely on public transport? **Thanks for the info, Phree. :D I'm so excited, it feels good when you get admission letters back. Thanks guys and gals! :D Angela.

Low Maintenance Pet. What should I get?
SkydiveNFlorida replied to RkyMtnHigh's topic in The Bonfire
I would suggest no pet, really. If you don't have the time, why make the animal suffer? That's why I chose to give up my dogs:( I loved them, but it wasn't fair to them in the end with my schedule. Fish are not low maintenance. You can buy an auto-feeder to feed them while you are gone, but water evaporates, algae needs cleaning, etc. The only low-maintenance fish tank is the one that houses a pet snake. Yes, there are fish that you can keep alive with low maintenance, but your tank will look like crap and fish will not thrive if maintenance is neglected. (I'm not saying get a snake, btw, although you might want to look into it I really don't know much about them.) I chose cat because ime they don't suffer (as much) from lack of attention as a dog or similar. But if you'll be gone more than a weekend i'd suggest no pet unless you know people who will check in on it. -A. -

That bacon cheddar burger commercial with Hootie
SkydiveNFlorida replied to ccowden's topic in The Bonfire
Yes, women do objectify themselves. But, it is especially sad when a product that advertises to children (such as mcdonalds or burger king) objectifies women. I wish those types of commercials were kept to superbowls and HBO. Its garbage like this that keeps women thinking this is what they are good for since it is what they grow up seeing. Rant over, and, for the record, I do not in any way have a problem with anyone in this thread who likes the commercial. I gave my opinion of it, and did not mean to insult anyone who feels differently by having done so. -A -

I thought it did a great job of objectifying women. -A -
Have you ever been to San Diego? Yep, sure have. I actually went to check out UCSD last year. I applied, we'll see how it goes;) I really loved it there, but we were there during a heat wave (about 100 degrees!), and amidst a time of forest fires. And, isn't Cali flooded right now? Ah, well, tho, I would still love to move out there... i've lived here too long (but, still, Florida isn't so bad if you like warm weather!) I'm considering Rose-Hulman less and less after the winter news from up that way, lol! Waiting on replied from GA Tech, UCSD, UC Berkeley & UT Austin. Seriously, tho, I would likely stay in South Florida if the schools were better, but the best ones in the state are in Gainesville & Tallahasee, yech! -A

I think not. I think if you go into it thinking about what precautions need to be taken if it should end.. then, you might as well just end it then because it won't last. jmo, i'm sure many have proven me wrong, but I don't feel a prenup is necessary unless you're a movie star or something, and even then if you aren't sure if you can trust someone, or if they will fuck you in the end, why get married? -A

Canopy Swooping - Sport or Stupidity?
SkydiveNFlorida replied to paulledden's topic in Safety and Training
This is really off topic I think. This isn't a post on how to swoop safely, I was making a point about why I am in this sport right now. This is what I find enjoyable. PM me to chat if you'd like, but i'm sure you know i've gotten coaching and am a proponent of coaching myself from past posts of mine. Take care:) -A -
Agreed. I dunno, lately i'm convinced it is the nicest place to live in the US. I think we had a small amt of rain here in S. Fla this weekend, when it was supposed to be miserable. Today, I walked around in the nice warm 80 degree weather. I would say that aint too shabby for February, lol! :D -A

What the Bleep! Do we know? movie..

Canopy Swooping - Sport or Stupidity?
SkydiveNFlorida replied to paulledden's topic in Safety and Training
I agree. I am not a hot ass swooper yet, but it is my goal and what brings me to the dz. I don't think i'd bother jumping nearly as often if I couldn't swoop. And, i'd likely work down to a tremendously smaller canopy to get way more speed on landing w/o a swoop. Landing slowly is boring. jmo. -A -

What the Bleep! Do we know? movie..
SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Yeah, I saw that on the website. This is the first movie since pulp fiction that i've actually felt the need to buy. Several times during the movie I had the urge to pause it and ponder, but can't do that in the theatre. I will be glad to make this the first dvd I have actually purchased (aside from Pilates.) Glad you liked it! Doesn't seem too popular (look at all the replies to this post!!), but I think anyone who likes science or is interested in the body, our purpose here, physics, etc, would enjoy this! :) -A -

SkydiveNFlorida replied to SkydiveNFlorida's topic in The Bonfire
Movie/Documentary involving quantum physics... Anyone seen it? I thought it was cool, but not sure how the uninitiated would like it. I think that you might want some exposure to the ideas of quantum physics, chemistry, biology, etc before going to see it... but I consider myself pretty new to these subjects myself and I enjoyed it. Makes you think (not something i'd want to see drunk.) http://www.whatthebleep.com/ -A -
MARCO ISLAND B@@GIE IS CANCELLED 2,15pm thursday
SkydiveNFlorida replied to judedre's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Though you did manage to miss the airport LZ once! All in good fun, no offense intended please, you know part of this sport is getting your mistakes rubbed in your face. :) Please do the same next time you see me fuck up! Actually, if you want to get technical, I missed the LZ at the airport _3_ times! Two of those I couldn't make it back, the other was a SFM (Stupid fucking move.) -A -
MARCO ISLAND B@@GIE IS CANCELLED 2,15pm thursday
SkydiveNFlorida replied to judedre's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Hmm, never heard about that. Makes sense though. Guess I was an outlaw on that jump. No, it is a C license requirement now (200 jumps used to be a D, but they changed beach jump requirements to a C keeping with the 200 jump min when the licenses changed.) A lot of people with more jumps then me overshot their mark at the marathon beach. I did a couple beach jumps and though it was small, I had little trouble navigating for a beach swoop. [Also, i've spent more time on canopy stuff than most people with my jump #s.] Regardless, I thought it silly before I jumped there, but I think the 200 jump minimum was definitely a smart idea. -A -

Naughty Cupid Boogie - Skydive Sebastian
SkydiveNFlorida replied to melstarr's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I just wanted to give a BIG THANKS to The Pink Mafia girls who organized this boogie! I have never seen so many female jumpers in one place, it was really great to be just be hanging out basking in the awesome vibes. I had a great time meeting everyone and i'll be sure to bring more cookies next time because 100+ were not enough! lol! Thanks also to Wendy, Bonnie, Nichole and the rest of the crew there in Sebastian. Those girls in manifest were extremely busy yet somehow maintained. They ALWAYS kick ass, and never cease to amaze me! :) Thanks, Ian, for the boogie shots:D It was great meeting everyone (or, almost everyone) and I hope to see you all again one day soon! Cheers! Angela.
