  1. Yea, right, like the attack on Dresden and Hamburg... Dresden didn't have any industry nor were any troops gathered in the area. Still, US and british bombers killed more than 250.000 innocent civilians. It was a planned and executed war crime. Or dropping Napalm on vietnamese villages... But yea, these times were soooo different. Lessons not leaned: Allied carpet bombing of german cities drove the germans to believe their Führer that the Allies were really the evil ones and he was to save europe from Communism. Industrial production of weapons reached its top late in '44 and only decreased because of lack of resources. Naplam on villages convinced people that they had to fight... not the VC.... The great smart bombs are only "highly" precise in practice environments, studies have shown that most of the ordnance in combat sorties is dropped/fired from too far away/unstable conditions. Most of the bombs dropped are still "dumb" bombs, anyway. *OUT* The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 2. No. But in a situation where one is in the position to choose the battlefield (as one is if he has Air and Land supremacy and his opponent is unable to threaten that), then all means should be taken to protect the civil population. To narrow it down, there is NO strategical or tactical need to engage in intensive streetfighting (in which the defender is always in advantage) for a week, putting own troops and civilian population at risk. Fallujah has basically been a lesson on how not to do it. The factual results so far: Mission not yet accomplished. More resistance fighters than before. 40 US soldiers dead. 600 dead iraqis, among them a unknown number of civilians. (To clarify: i don't state that the majority of them are civilians) Thousands wounded. At the end of the day, this played more into the hands of the resistance than helping the US seize terrorists. I still think the US arguments to justify this war were made up in large parts. Don't get me wrong, i'm happy that SH is gone, but what makes me tick is that after a year, no WMDs have been found, but iraqs oil infrastructure has been restored to prewar level (prewar '91...). Considering the roles of many of the current goverment members in the top offices of the rebuilding companies doesn't help convince me either. I hate the thought that coalition) soldiers and innocent iraqis die for some old mens stock revenue... Just glad there are none of my buddies down there. And justification for war in general, well, that is waaay offtopic and would take too much time away from my work to discuss... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 4. Where did i state that? Quotations please. I just don't see it as a viable practice to shell and bomb living quarters to get 40 people armed with AKs, RPGs and molotovs out of a mosque... Just to annoy the hell out of you. Where there any in Iraq, btw? So the situation has been resolved, it's not just a ceasefire??? Ahhm, wait.... 5. Preannounced repressions against civilians in case of terrorist attacks (after the announcement of repressions) were covered by the hague convetion at that time. (This doesn't justify what was done, of course)(this was before the 1949 geneva convention). The idea was to keep the fighting between recognized combattants and give terrorists a good reason not to terrorize. Didn't work, at the loss of civilian life. The argument for the US carelessness of civilian casualities is the fact the terrorists are hiding behind them. Now, am i the only one to see an analogy in the argumentation and situation? Point out the differences for me please. The argument of justification for the occupation is not acceptable, as obviously the terrorists don't share that view. Note that i am comparing arguments, not actions. You will have to decide on the actions for yourself by the body count. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 6. If you read my posts here, i didn't state anywhere that anyone is doing wrogn at shooting an attacker. I don't care about US soldiers shooting people that attack them with deadly weapons (compared to throwing stones at APCs). Applying the ducking for cover logic generally applied for iraqis in this forum, the soldiers were most likely only duck behind the plexiglass to reload... If you are fired upon with AKs and RPGs, Plexiglass won't help much, so were are those kids with AKs in that picture? I never stated that a soldier doesn't have the right for self defence. read again. Bombing living quarters in a town is not self defence, though. 9. Well, i have come across all kinds of batteries in the photo shops. I used to find certain of these flat-type batteries for other appliances there (even though i never looked for ProTrack batteries yet, my first set still works fine). The expensive one was one for a SLR, which of course uses a way more massive battery than the dytter/ProTrack. Dytter/PT batteries are a lot cheaper, of course. The dytter batteries are of a pretty common size, they are just a variation in output voltage, why the type with their number (CR 2330 instead of CR 2320)is usually not in stock as it is not commonly used in many other devices. Then again, it might just be a conspiracy, as you say... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 11. I guess (aside from all the gear dealers) a dedicated photo shop might be a good call, as they usually carry all sorts of weird battery types. The kind where you ask yourself "why dont they just use a standard AA battery which is just 2mm longer and doesn't cost 40 bucks???" when getting that replacement for your SLR... 12. Point taken. Still, you have the three different setup modes on the Vigil. This adds some steps to the software, on setting up as well as on firing. The posibility to read out the data via infrared also adds hardware. This is all additional stuff. Now it can be argued if the software is such an issue, or the additional hardware. I think every additional factor to "as simple as possible" makes it more complicated. It will prove if it is just as safe. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 13. If it is an issue needing an immediate hardware change (like the added shielding in some of the first units, but that was rigger fixable), there is a mandatory service bulletin. Still to my knowledge, as small as it may be, so far there have not been any mandatory hardware replacements affecting ALL Cypres. There were issues with single units/batches due to bad batches of subcontractors etc, but never all units affected by design. AAD can be glad this came up so early in the process. And on a properly working unit, there shouldn't be any issues with software updates in the first place. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 14. I'm working hard to take that weekend off, seems to be great fun!
  15. There's only 10 kinds of people in this world; those who understand binary and those who don't. Take it as Zero for Zero errors if you need. Having Vigil say all the nice hellos and freefall speeds etc makes it actually more complicated than an AAD needs to be... Not quite right, it was the circuit layout on the boards, not the board itself. They had to redesign the circuit layout to fix it. Yep, but it's not quite the proclaimed not needed maintanance.. Hope they resolve that in-air-fire soon. Competition will help the market. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... 16. Givig people better ideas is the only real way to do it (that's the way it seems to have worked with communism, although it took a while and there are still some around who don't seem to get it...). Well... Lets just hope it turns out to be a somewhat stable coutry with a government that the whole population feels represented by and that is not comprised of clerics... I'm at work right now (Note to self: Don't frequent speakers corner, takes too much time!) Nice playin, night night.

  18. Yeah, right, the ideas aren't around anymore... Ah, since when are the contractors not armed anymore? So much for opportunist definition of civilian... As for the numbers of insurgents, reports indicate that the way the US were fighting in the town, a lot of people joined their ranks due to that. Well, it set you back 40 soldiers as well. High price to arrest one man. If you acted the same way if someone invaded the US, you would also hide behind women, have them shoot at the invaders and your kids reload your weapons? Yea, it really backs up your arguments... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...

  20. NOOOOO. Can i have fries with that? Indeed, makes for an interesting read (didn't read the whole thing yet, that'll have to wait for later). The question arises how to counter a strategy like that. IMHO, having them sit and wait is an option. A better otion than to engage in bloody street fighting, at least. What can they do? they don't have armor, so they can't launch any large-scale miltary operations. Setup a perimeter around the city, and contain the problem. Maenwhile, get other places to work and show them the difference it makes. You can dismiss that as blind idealism, but negotiating worked for the british, they don't have so many casualties (own and civilian). The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. 22. If you still think you can fight ideas with guns, good luck. Right now, all US actions taken in Fallujah show but one thing: More insurgents than before, lots of civilian casualties and not an inch closer to the objective. 24. If they don't have a choice, they are hostages of the insurgents, or they hide there, because they would be shot at by US forces anyway. Any other reasons? 25. Don't shoot the cow!!! Shoot them if they take part in fighting. I have no problem with that at all. My point is only that i can't accept uninvolved people hiding in their homes to be killed. If you shoot someone who is forced to be a shield, hey, just shoot any damn hostage taken by a bank robber in the US! Same thing. And if the US don't want any more enemies in the region, they better apply strategies that avoid shelling of towns and mosques alltogether. Read here.
