Isn't USPA membership if jumping at a USPA DZ only mandatory if you are a US resident? Just curious, b/c i was jumping in Lake Wales earlier this year and didn't become a USPA member... Still this year i had to become a CSPA member as i am considered to be a canadian resident by my DZO... Edited to add: Oh and of course, i do have a german license (because as a german in Germany, you are required to get a german license, even if you have a foreign one...simple process though). Real logbooks vs. audible altimeter logging
Chrisky replied to peek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
People with too few jumps have always been handing out their protracks to others to bump the numbers up instead of putting wrong numbers in their log books, if they really felt they needed to... How about placing a "relay guy" in the plane and starting to put one floater after another out after pilot agrees? Like pilot says:"ok, put floater number three out!", relay gives #3 a go, and if the pilot gets a stall warning, immediate exit? Might take a few fun jumps to figure out, but what the heck? Would be an idea for a new pilot and to find out how many floaters can be put out? The plane obviously would have to be a full load on jump run. Would be safer than just throwing 5 people on the rail right away, wouldn't it? Just thinking.. Something still bugs me about that... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. Don't wanna be rude, but half a page down is the same thread by the same author minus the question whether a 170 will fit in the container... To answer the question: Wings are very comfortable and they have excellent customer service. If you look at the rigs type and serial number, they will be able to tell you which main canopy sizes it was designed for. You should be able to find that info in a small pocket on the back of the mudflap on the right MLW. You might also find the Reserve Data card there, from which you might see whether the reserve was always packed for a scheduled repack or also inbetween (due to cutaway or anything). Probably not if the Reserve is older than the Container. Ask the owner if he still has the other Reserve Data card if you really want to know if there's a jump on it or not. Just curious; If not for shape and profile (and trim), how else can you determine (in terms of designing) a canopies' performance range? I imagine there are different width and depth sizes among same sqft canopies, and i can imagine that to be quite a difference in their performance (ie. creation of lift, toggle input, stall properties). Do manufacturers change the profile of a canopy along the width of the wing? Any other factors i am not aware of? Materials for drag? Of course handling of different canopies is hard to compare due to different frames of reference as well. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. Print Screen will usually not work with played back video of any kind because it is using overlays that are not captureable. Most Software DVD players do have a screen capture option though, just press F1 for help and search your programs' help file. PowerDVD indeed is the best program i have found so far. Apple laptop always worse than desktop of almost same stats?

On that note, how can realtime be 30% slower than realtime? Assuming you are working with decent software (Avid Xpress (DV)/Premiere Pro). Just curious. Second that gaming... A semi-elliptical is usually not tapered over the whole (or more than 3 outer cells) of the leading and trailing edges, while with an elliptical, the three center cells can be tapered as well, if i got it right. Anybody with better knowledge please correct/support this. As for the experience question, i think a semielliptical in general may not be as twitchy as an elliptical, but i haven't flown an elliptical yet. I'm flying a Paratec Faqtor, which is a semielliptical, and after like 80ish jumps on it, it definitely still has a lot more in the envelope than i am willing to push right now. Transferring from a square to a semi or elliptical also carries differences in handling. Where i could do a quick left/right input on my square, it rocked a little, but that was it. A semi or elliptical may start spinning up, as they tend to respond quicker (although that attribute also largely depends on the canopies' size b/c of line length and resulting leverage). And rightly so. Sorry, that's what happens when you read a thread too fast between two renders... I hate working on sunny sunday afternoons... I just wanted to let the author know that you don't necessarily have to switch to Mac when you are used to PCs (as he stated in his original post). Not at all. Just wanted to post some background on myself because i encountered alot of "What does he know"s from the experienced video guys at a DZ before, just because i'm not the greatest camera flyer with thousands of jumps (yet..). So i figured a little BG wouldn't hurt. Nothing of that was intended to start some sort of platform war or question anyones credibility. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. What he said plus They are not safe. Just because nothing happens, it is not a safe dive. If you're high up and know you can't get down, get away. Same thing when you are waaay low and can't get up (and the others can't get down, obviously). If you see that you won't get there until breakoff, pepare to get away, considering where the others will most likely go (if they don't see you). MAKE a PLAN! You likely never edited Video on a properly setup XP machine w/ realtime DV... Editing video is editing video, i seriously see no differnce between the packages (except maybe in those cheesy stock transitions and Titles...). And if you're going for extremly highend visual FX, talking compositing that is, it just doesn't matterwhether PC or Mac. (Non-compositing go for a PC.) It is not apropriate to compare a G4 Dual with a Stock Compusmart Desktop PC for Video editing... Rather compare it to an Alienware MJ 12 Workstation.(And while at it the prices don't seem so dfferent anymore..) Also, for DVD output, you are restricted to Apples DVD encoder, which is not the best. Btw that example can be created from scratch using AfterFX on any platform rather fast, what is Mac specific about it? Do i know what i'm talking about? I personally edited a daily vid for a freefly festival on a Acer 800 Laptop (Pentium M 1.3 GHz w/ 1 GB Ram) and did the DVD (including custom menus w/ looping video etc) on my home machine. A PC does the job just as well as a Mac. Minus all the Mac drawbacks, IMO. This is not to bash Macs, but if you are used to a PC, you don't have to switch to a Mac just because you wanna do video. Kinda the same thing like people were saying you'd have to get a Mac to work in Photoshop properly a few years back. Was it true? Ah, well... Oh, and PC upgrades are cheaper... In the end, it doesn't matter, it's just a tool. I'll do a job on either if i have to, but personally i stick to PC because i get more control over my own machine because i have more experience on it. I'm just annoyed by those who say Mac is the only option to do this right and easy... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Did I do the best thing? near break off other diver goes low.
Chrisky replied to JustRelax's topic in Safety and Training
Yep, good one. It's always, even on "fun jumps", the best idea to have a plan and stick to it. If you're on a two way, changing it (if all goes crap or reallyreally good) may be alright, because everybody just has one person to track, but if there are more, stick to the plan. It was a very good thing to talk to your fellow jumpers that they scared you (they also made the dive more dangerous by being "unpredictable"). I have always found a calm talking-to with emphasis on the mistakes made a LOT more helpful than a short yelling at... The coolest thing that ever happened to me was an instructor taking me aside after when i got relatively close to a student on final (same level, about 250 ft horizontal sideways, same heading). He didn't say "You shouldn't have done this or that, you could have scared him!", but rather told me he would have expected me to recognize the situation earlier, as it might have scared the student. Subtle difference, but it doesn't make you feel like an idiot (or make you think the guy who talks to you is one...). The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. He's stating an abstract. Wisdom enables you to make the right choice by recognizing it based on intelligence. Knowledge (of previous situations) doesn't necessarily enable you to make the right decision. Of course, knowledge in combination with intelligence is the best combination. One can be wise without being knowledgeable (i.e. like a young jumper taking a conservative approach after analyzing the circumstances), and vice versa (380+ jump wonder "knows" he was aggressive and successful the last times, hooks it in). Like knowing that someone wasn't run over by a truck because he dropped flat on the ground doesn't help decide to (wisely) jump aside if the car is only 2" from the ground... Not correlating wisdom and knowledge does not mean a knowledgeable person can't be wise, neither vice versa. Sokrates, 400 bc, "I know that i know nothing". Very new find... Didn't some study about skydivers find that on average skydivers are people of higher intelligence compared to the average population? This is not to make this study inapplicable but to question studies in general, respecticely to always read the whole of it... What do i know? "The Parachute and its Pilot" Book
Chrisky replied to BrianSGermain's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I mailed with Brian about my order (ordered and payed via PayPal in like an hour, two weeks before it shipped...), but something got messed in shipping so my copy never went out. It's currently sold out so i'll have to wait for the next print (which is scheduled). I mailed Brian about it and he checked with the shipping guy and found it out. He was really sorry about it. Just mail him and tell him to check if your order shipped (Note to self: mail him and check when the new copies are available and start bugging him...). Good luck, and hopefully the book will be available again soon. Edit: Now at home with access to my emails here's Brians update as of May 31st: "I will send the new (3rd Edition) book as soon as they get here from the printer. It may take as long as four more weeks. I didn't expect it to sell so quickly." The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Ok, so seven people in the air and only three were able to get together at some point. So he was one of the five, but not one of the three out of the seven.... Maybe it was not the smartest thing to do? In reply to why you shared this: While it is a good thing to know what to do in this situation, this incident is more of a example what you should do to prevent getting in that situation in the first place. Like why not to get more people into a dive than actually makes sense. That was a 6way with camera, out of which three people made it together and obviously not all managed to stay aware of the others. That is a situation you should not get in. You're two lucky guys. This reads like a very good example of how the big sky theory is no replacement for a good planned dive and disciplined breakoff procedures. Would RW people go on a 5way when they aren't able to keep level? Did you mean a 5way plus diver plus camera? Or a 3way plus the two? Edited to add: Which of the other jumpers was it? One of the three man base or the early guy or even someone else? The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Here's what i imagine, not being a rigger myself: The Cypres case usually sits in a pocket at the bottom of your reserve container. Your rigger would have to pop the reserve, take out the Freebag, install the Cypres, cutter, cables etc. and then put the freebag and RPC back in, if he can do so with keeping everything in order. He doesn't necessarily have to do the actual packing of the canopy into the freebag again. So much for my imagination. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. How do you extend the recovery arc by harness input? The recovery arc usually describes the arc a canopys flight path describes from going from a dive to level flight with no input, doesn't it? I think rounds don't make sense, the draft of the flames will suck you (or if you're "lucky", just the canopy) in. A PRO-canopy ist the only valid option, and even that may be insufficient. Steering could easily be designed to be very docile, and "pull right, go right" should be good enough for a panikking whuffo... Ads unreasonably high cost to the equasion though, i guess... I remember reading such a question before here on DZ.com somewhere. Somebody even posted a "weld-ur-self" instruction for it, i think. Basically what you would need to do (in my inexperienced inagination) is open your Protrack/Dytter and weld (smolder?) the LEDs' contacts to the contacts of the "speaker"/sound device. Voids warranty of course... The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. From the edge you just see more. ... Not every Swooper hooks & not every Hooker swoops ...
