  1. Another thing that you can consider is, don't stand and take pictures. Kneel or stand on something. We all walk around all the time and see life from eye level. You can make the pictures stand out a bit by getting away from eye level. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 2. Please insist from your instructors that they talk to you about these things after a skydive. If they aren't doing so, remind them that you are paying them good money to teach you something. If you aren't debriefed you aren't being taught. I don't let any of my students leave until they have gone over the skydive with me and know what they did well and what they need to do better the next time they jump. Have fun!
  3. Fancy. I like the dimensions of the DVD/Memstick camera! Only 4oz more than a pc1000 too. Hope the OIS fully disables on that one. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 4. haha, yeah sorry I was just a bit confused,...if the camera has a 30mm thread, and you're attaching a 37mm wide angle lens by using a step ring, then why do you need to zoom in? I would understand if it is the other way around? Sorry, dont know much about this stuff. I've seen lenses where you'd need to zoom in slightly because otherwise the corners get a bit dark due to vignetting, this usually only show on a pc not on a tv screen. Most lenses do not have this problem, but some do, esp if you need to use 2 step-up rings in a pinch because you haven't got the right one, for instance if you use both a 25-30 and 30-37mm ring to go from a 25mm camera to a 37mm lens. Tip: don't do that This is different from the vignetting you get when using a 25mm lens on a 30mm camera. Not sure if I'm explaining this right anyway it's not usually a problem. The reason you might get slightly dark corners in this setup is because the step ring moves the lens you are attaching farther from the camera's lens, so its own field of view may start to see the edge of the attached lens. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 5. Hire a traffic lawyer in both states. They can appear on your behalf, i.e. you wont have to go back to that state, and most often can get your ticket to not show up on any insurance records. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 7. Meh, in Wisconsin we still skydive when the weather is 30s or less on the ground. It only gets colder as you climb to altitude! Now, I am not saying that *I* skydive a whole lot in the winter, but we do have plenty of people who do At least in the tunnel you can stand under the heat. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 8. Be warned.. This page has an evil resize your browser window code bite. As a web developer and end use of the internet, I have to say, I really hate when websites do that!!! 9. I think you meant "ovary sensitive", and yeah, you're right. As for the OP, I agree that it's a good AFF jump. The video is just so-so, but the student did great. Blues, Dave Yeah I agree. The vidiot was in a bad position, had bad framing most of the skydive, let the student go out of frame, was in the way (might scare a student to be tracking at the video guy) and all in all, I just think it could have been done better. Hell, I am sure the guy has shot better? Looked very run of the mill to me. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 10. I recognize that you are new to the video forums scott. I don't know how much you have read here, but you haven't posted much at all. Do you realize you are arguing about some pretty specific things with someone who is a professional in the video world outside of skydiving? Someone who is well known in the industry, gets to see most cameras before they even come out and trains people how to use the really high end stuff. I am sure there is a laundry list of other accomplishments that DSE has too. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 12. Thanks, not exactly great advice here! Mostly because you could be screwing some poor AFF-I who has to work with this person. Not that I would imagine them being unable to deal with the situation, but it sucks to make life harder for someone! Please be careful about what advice you give to a student, especially if you are not an instructor! ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 15. See page 25 (I think) of this months skydiving. Anyhow, the way I have always seen the ones built with people standing on top is with a hanger that lets go from the bottom after the top guy docks. There is quite a bit of momentum that gets transfered up, might be a little more than a person doing a very spread out hand stand could endure. You could probably get a really slow head down flyer to just dock up there, but I think it defeats the purpose somewhat if its just a freeflyer tweakin himself out to go really slow. That's only my opinion though. Doing this with someone also hanging from the bottom would be easier and still look cool. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 16. I stow the excess with the pin, but I jump a tiny canopy that has very little excess brake line. After I thread the excess through the elastic keepers on the back of the risers, I'm left with a loop about 4" in length. The loop is not big enough to cause the reach through knot malfunction. I don't need to pin that small loop, but I do and it works great for me. Doug yeah I am in the same situation as you. We have however had two reach through "malfunctions" at my dz. Both jumpers were new jumpers and opted to cutaway. I just want to point out though that, you can cause a reach through problems with other types of risers too. I have gotten a glove stuck in the excess loop for a while with a sloppy grab before. They key point is that you need to be looking at what you are doing when you are unstowing your brakes. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Coach

Everything! More seriously, what helped me more than anything else in getting my AFFI rating was doing a lot of 4-way. NOTHING else teaches you flying skills as quickly/efficiently. I understand that joining a team isn't everyone's cup of tea, but above-average RW skills are essential to being a good coach/AFFI, and if you want to be one you need to focus on RW. Freefly, wingsuit and all that other stuff is cool and fun, but not very helpful when you've got a student spinning on their back. If you've got some RW competitors at your DZ talk to them about the "mantis" flying style and start working on it now, while your muscle memory is still forming... everything about it is 1000% better than the way most people fly, but you'll rarely see a non-4-way guy using it. Other than that, I'd say try to pay attention to the instructors/coaches/organizers around you... make a note of who does a great job and who does a not-so-great job and why, and make mental notes to emulate the behavior of the good ones. Good teaching skills are as important as good flying skills. I feel that almost all of my in-air belly skills are based on doing 4-way. Made significant improvements in everything I did.
  18. That sucks. My dad always carried his pistol in the event that he encountered another animal that didn't take kindly to him being in the woods. Then again, they don't particularly care what you carry for guns where he hunted. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 20. It's never gonna be up to my standard but the heavy, stretchy kind of bandaid (it's actually Curad, if I remember right) with a small bit of foam underneath has held OK, I'm mostly wanting to kill the back two diaphragms of the crappy surround mic they put on the camera. The next gen has the same mic, too. Just saw the new AVCHD card cams yesterday for the first time, they look promising as well, but this surround bullshit is very frustrating. I can't wait to find out if there are some solid state cams that are going to have no optical image stabilization. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 24. It would be some work, but you could do a full replacement to "daytime" with the right sets of pictures. You just have to do some creative masking and it might look a little shopped! The best would be if you had a properly exposed nighttime shot of just the opera house to use. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 25. Just want to add that sometimes a plan B landing spot is behind you! You don't always need to keep flying toward the planned landing area. If you aren't going to make it take a look at what is behind you. My general motto is that so long as I have a place that I know I can land and would want to land, I keep flying for the main landing area. As soon as I no longer have a place between me and the landing area that I can for sure land in, I take my out. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
