Here is something to wrap your head around... Your fear of heights is only there because you "know" your high up and "know your afraid of heights." All the visual cues that tell you that you are high up don't kick in till you get down low to the ground. Maybe that will help you forget the fear of heights thing. Also - yep... most people have a lot of anxiety about skydiving when they first start. That comes from a lack of trust and knowledge of the gear. You have to build that up. As an AFF instructor, basically all the students I see are nervous and somewhat scared. Just a fact of learning to skydive. That said, don't jump if you don't want to. This sport isn't for everyone, that's for sure. It can be a really great thing to conquer it though and can change your outlook on life quite a bit. Sure did for me! ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Swooping is taking one last poke at the bear before escaping it's cave - davelepka

Practicing swooping during regualr full altitude loads
Fast replied to bbl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Are you saying they skip 180´s out of their learning progression ? Thats real nice !! Also, what about 360´s are they "old school" also ? For the most part I skipped 180s. Did a WHOLE lot of 90s, a very small number of 180 degree turns and then started doing 270s. I was just not feeling that 180s were reasonably safe. I didn't like the way the blindspots worked out with them. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. As a person who often gets stuck doing web design, it's bad practice to start questioning your users. If a lot of people are running that low of a resolution, then this was a bad design change. You can't say to someone, "Well, why can't you read it that small, I can" because that's just insulting. I have an office users of which most of them can't read the screen if we run the flat panels at full resolution. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I have never actually thought to teach one way or another. I personally do all my stowing, etc. before I release my brakes because the canopy just comes out of the sky to damn fast at full flight to do that stuff. For a student though, I don't see many good reasons for them to be letting go. I don't think its the end of the world if they want to fly around some up higher w/o them though. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. As long as the wuffos keep jumping, I can keep jumping. I don't really spend any of my income from my regular job on jumps. It only affects my ability to drive to and from the dz (which is only 25 minutes from home) and how much I can spend on beer. I agree that the WFFC isn't a good indicator of skydiving. I also was talking with a friend this weekend about the rising costs of Jet Fuel and how the economy is doing. Right now jump prices at my dz are lower than what I would guess to be a national average because we can squeak by and we are a club. If Jet A keeps going up its gonna drive prices up though. If the economy doesn't turn around and it doesn't seem like it is going to, I think we are going to start seeing the vast number of boogies shrink. People aren't going to travel so far. I think we will start to see less turbine dzs too. The big ones will stay and get bigger and a lot of other places might end up cessna dzs again. For what it's worth, you couldn't pay me enough money to start a DZ right now. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. That still doesn't work as well as some other searches. On many forums, when you do a search in "Subject and body" (so you can get a full set of results since you might not find what you are looking for if you only search the body) there is an option to return results sorted by "Thread" or by "Post" The way this forum works, you only have the option to return the results by post. sucks kinda. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. My gripe with this is that it makes it a whole hell of a lot easier to be an anonymous troll. We can't even say to go fill out your profile cause no one has names in their profile. There are Ads on the forums? Who knew... (Firefox + Adblock Plus = most awesome web experience ever) Anyways... uh, yeah the "My stuff" thing on the left really sucks. Wastes a TON of space on my screen for stuff that I won't click on hardly ever. There are now too many ways for me to get to my profile to edit it. It was easy before and its obnoxious now. If you look at the way PHPBB/vBulletin manages profiles its a whole lot nicer. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Sky Knights does not take any tandem certificates from Skyride. We are very strict on this. That stuff changes and it can change fast. I have had my share of experience of such change to know not to trust where clouds are at in the sky. Our general rule of thumb is to stay in one place (slow turn under canopy) till you come out of the bottom of it though for the most part it doesn't come into play because we do a pretty good job of staying out of the clouds. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. My advice is to stop getting medical information on the internet. Find a doctor that understands aviation and go talk to that person. The people (excepting a few people who I have yet to see post in this thread) are not doctors and have no relevant way to give you advice about your personal health. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. How often do you replace your type 17 (mini) risers??
Fast replied to pjc's topic in Gear and Rigging
My old rig probably has over 1000 jumps on the risers. It's now my second rig and I don't really have plans to replace them. My new rig has like 20 jumps on the risers and I don't think I will replace them for at least a 1000 jumps, though there is no way to know. Depends on how they wear. If my rigger or I think they are getting crappy I will replace them. I don't go on any set numbers. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. When I was just a coach I was never responsible for making sure my student was stable in freefall. It was expected that I wouldn't get to see someone who couldn't do that for themselves. I was not allowed to pull for a student either. As an AFFI, those things are now my responsibility. I have also found that as an AFFI you just have to be a much better teacher than you do as a coach. Not saying it isn't good to be a good teacher as a coach, just there is a lot more wisdom that you have to impart in a very short period of time as an AFFI. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. The concept of "deciding to fire" and then firing later is something that some people were spouting off when the vigil first came out to try and convince people to buy a vigil instead and it just isn't true. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. Have you been able to jump one of these yet?? With the new information that just came out about that new HyePye device that you can attach a bite switch to, and the apparent ability to take 10.2mp pictures while shooting AVCHD if this camera can totally shut off the hard drive and the OIS in it cooperates with freefall (RW/Freefly/Tandem) I could see myself getting one of these. so... any updates? Anyone tried this thing yet? I don't really want to be the guinea pig here based on how much it costs and how little money I have! ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. There is a preorder link for the Hypeye D Pro on the Get Hypoxic Website listing the price at $99 for the switch. An additional $29 for the expansion kit which appears to add the ability to attach a bite/tounge/blow switch, Interface with the L&B Optima Audible for visual indication, adds a puch button interface and includes a debrief cable. or you can just get the debrief cable for $10 and they have listed an estimated ship date of 9 May. Scott Wow. Is this compatible with all of the Sony cameras that have the d-connector? ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. While I haven't really come out and taken an opinion on this thread, I just don't think what you are saying is true. If the preponderance of people you know, at your dz, think that downsizing is a bad idea, then it probably is. There are a lot of people out there who think that any type of downsizing is bad no matter what. Some of them can be pretty vocal about it too. This stuff should be common sense, but the "cool" factor makes it hard for people to be smart about it. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. The answer to me sounds like having a second computer for your living room. Pick up a laptop that is compatible with mythTV (and powerfull enough to decode HD) and use that in your living room. You can set up a backend and have the laptop pull data from your main computer. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
