    the price of BASE

recently there has been many issues that I have been close to that has made me look more deeply (deeper than usual) into the price of BASE. I have only been (active) in the sport for just under 3 years, In this time I have learnt more than I could ever imagine, I have had more fun then you could ever imagine, I have met some of the coolest people on earth. When I first looked into BASE 5 years ago I set out learning everything i could, I then after 2 years and what I deemed a full appreciation of the sport started jumping. I then carried on for almost 3 years jumping and having the most amazing time I could ever imagine, then I got injured - in the scope of things, not badly, but enough to receive 3 surgeries and at the moment 6 months on crutches. 5 weeks before I bust myself up, a good friend of mine (who I had helped getting into BASE and who I knew was right for BASE) bust his leg up on a jump we would all say was "standard", 5 weeks after I bust my leg up 2 other jumping friends also bust themselves up (1 with a femur and bad foot smash, 1 with 2x tib and fib), during this time a friend of mine in Denmark had a friend bust a leg and one guy who he knows dies, it was not long after this I lost the first person I knew well die in BASE, not long after that I find out someone who I spoke to almost everyday during my recovery dies whislt trying to make a jump. BASE had suddenly got very personal and close more so than it was or how I accepted or expect it. Now we all seem to accept when we enter this sport that we can get injured / or die / or have friends injured or die.......... but no matter how switched on and accepting of this, when it starts happening around you nothing can prepare you to how you feel when you get that phone call. I am writing this as a newbie jumper who was truely accepting of the risks and effects of our sport, but until it happens to you (as I reaslise this has happened to many of the more exeperienced jumpers) - you actually have no fu(king idea of how it will effect you. After the bad run in the UK at the moment of some really close friends (injury and death) - maybe I am thinking about things too deeply (i do have way too much time on my hands!!!!!) , maybe I am blabbing too much.......... but the fact remains - although you may think you accept everything and the fall outs attached to this sport when bad things happen - you have no idea how or why you will react when it actually happens. What am I trying to say? I dont know exactly what.......... but for new jumpers coming into the sport and doing stuff that experienced people may give you **** for - I have just learnt a lesson over the past 6 months, they give you **** for a reason, people you love and people who are safe can die or get badly injured............... it can happen to anyone of us at anytime............... I always was accepting of this and know it was a risk of the sport............ but until you loose friends and see people around you injured badly or dead............ it does not seem to hit home.......... please people be safe.............. I am sick of hearing about friends like this...
  4. I am not sure if this is well known or not, but on playing around with shareaza it seems that a good few people have enabled a full search and download of their "entire" hard drive. This maybe obvious, and perhaps well known to the people more knowledgable in this sort of thing then certainly myself, but if even I am able to work out and find people with a fully accessable hard drive and there are people out there enabling anyone to access any file on their PC, then perhaps it is more worrying than you thought. Check your settings people, you never know what people can get from you!! its kinda scary! Yes I know I have too much time on my hands!!

  13. As the UK board is down and in light of recent events, I just wanted to make a note that the UK BASE jumpers get together is still planned. I think this will be a good opportunity for UK jumpers to get together, meet new faces, meet new contacts, reflect on the past year, and just basically all get together and have a few beers, a chat, and watch some video (if people want to bring it) 4th December 6pm, Belushis, Camden High Street. This invitation is certainly open to new jumpers, and very much open to people who are seriously considering BASE as something they want to persue. This is a perfect opportunity for you to meet contacts, gain information, gain advice, and gain an insight. If you could let me know if your interested, I would appreciate it. Be safe people.........

  16. just curious: how many people put in a load of DZ time before they go on a FJC? People who rate the fact they learnt about rigging up a system or gain knowlegdge in parachutes on a FJC - surely you could actually do this at the DZ for free and well before you decide "uh huh im gonna take a FJC" what happened to working for it?
  17. in the end people are dying. People die without being yahoo, people die when they do everything right......... when some gung ho mutha fucker goes out and has no respect for how close they are to fucking killing themselves normally to then add to the odds of killing someone else then they need to wake up and face the shit that is about to hit them.............. Dont be a fucking Know-it-all, dont go out thinking you are gods gift to anti gravity.......... you mutha fuckers can die so dont fuck with it.............. be safe and make sure you are as safe as possible............. if you do shit like this then expect the worse.............. dont be fucking ignorant! people die cause of this shit............. dont think they dont..............
  18. maybe just you, the main page is back up under www.basejumper.org but the forum is still down................
  19. out of all the drugs I have taken Crack is certainly the one that scares me.................. to get that driven after only a few hits of the pipe, i dread to think what someone is like after many many times or time using it............... but saying that, its not the worst drug, as its not as sneaky as another one that grabs you without you knowing................
  20. congrats! E's are good E's are good ebinEzers good!
  21. Not trying to slate JU here but: How can he give more quality time with the amount of people he takes on a FJC compared to a manufacturer having a ratio of 1 or 2 instructors to 2 or 3 students? More jumps? - this is no guage to how much you get from the course - when I did my FJC I got 1 jump in, this does not mean I learnt less than someone with 12 jumps on a FJC with a shed load of other students (BASE is not just about making a jump)
  22. I have always been of the belief that pack jobs are low down on the list for off heading problems: Most of my off headings I can explain by the wind direction and body position; these are the 2 main reasons to me for having an off heading with a canopy packed to encourage an on heading opening. Does anyone disagree with this? Swoops: I dont mean to be disrespectful but your jump numbers mean fuck all. Never guage experience by jump numbers alone. Also your vengance experience means nothing in the BASE world. "does anyone have comments on 180s on a daggers" - well I have had one on my dagger (including many 120's 160's and alot over 90+) and it was sod all to do with my packing. There are many other aspects to off headings then just packing: PM me and I will let you know my thoughts on it. Be cool
  23. I have since found out they are based in brazil............. but brazil is a big place!
