  1. Some people I know (including myself) goes through something similar. For some weeks you go at it like a mad man and then for a couple of weeks you just dont have the same drive. Like anything in life you have up days and down days.......... jesus I still have days where I wonder why the fuck I BASE........ I know it will always be a part of me, but sometimes I dont have the drive to go at it hard and will just poodle along doing a flick here and there (with UK weather sometimes this is forced on you when you are driven big time!) I know people that go and jump at EVERY chance , and I know people that do a few jumps here and there every month or so.......... To me (and some others I speak to) being a BASE jumper is not about how many jumps you do or have............... it just shows that everyone has their own way of experiencing and doing something that they love.......... We are all different............. just love the sport your way..........
  2. if your profile is correct, I would not even advise you BASE jump in England..........

Um, did you mean to put that in a different thread? oops! but its not bad that thoughts about mentors get a look!

oh well! at least you dont have metal in your leg waiting for a bone graft! I had great groundrush from 210, in fact the best ever!.............. but I also had great time off!
  6. i knew someone who when I gave them advice about jumping when I had 10 jumps still went out and SLed a 120ft crane with a bungy and a CRW rig, he fucked both his ankles up and wondered why he got so badly hurt, but he still went around the DZ telling everyone he was a BASE jumper, after 6 months not being at the DZ and out BASE jumping people asked me if i jumped with xxxx xxxxxxxx, it seems he was there boasting. When I heard this, I gave him my "BASE file" that I had spent 2 years getting together, my friend lived with him and he never read it, instead he prefered to go around and tell people he had BASE jumped lower than me! some people can be taken under your wing, others cant - they will just crave the reputation of being a BASE jumper, with the ease of making some BASE jumps nowadays I feel the wave of people who want to be "known" outways the people that do it for their own reason............. I may have helped him by being a mentor, but at time I certainly did not have the experiece to do so.............. so where is the balance? I feel slightly cheated................
  7. I have heard alot about people being a mentor, so those that have "mentored" please stand up and give your thoughts about why you thought you could mentor and what benefit you gave to your student. I have heard of people being a mentor after 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 blah blah blah jumps..... I have heard about people taking first timers to objects that even the mentor has not jumped before, or taking the student in daylight to get "the video" for a training aid, or students jumping with twisted leg straps cause they were not noticed on the pre jump check, or 180s cause the packing lesson was moved half way through and a twist was put in............ the more I hear the more I realise that people being taught are not getting proper lessons......... Only 4 years ago in the UK I tried to find a mentor and people with 200, 400 etc jumps said they were too inexperienced to take on students............... so in the past 4 years what exactly has changed? Only having 2.5 years active in the sport I know some people will say "what the fuck does he know" - but I have some concerns that I think are valid............

    SL v Freefall

my reasons for it, if anyone cares, is that although i know the technical side of it, and accept people that do, when I BASE I like the feeling and thoughts about leaving an object without any connection to anything..... In my world I am floating at that point, and SL / PCA goes against what I want......... I would never say SL / PCA is not a BASE jump, but its just not my bag, I like to "perceive" the feeling of freedom when i step off without anything but me in the air, its then all about what I do and not what is behind me..................... I want to SL and do more PCA to gain more experience in other aspects of the sport which I feel I need to round my skills and enjoy other aspects of the sport........ but at a personal level of reason it does not fit me.............. in the end I want to try SL, mcconkey, tards, blah blah blah - as technically I know they will make me a better jumper.............. People who are going out mentoring new jumpers should know all aspects of all jumps as who knows what your student will get into....... some like the low shit, some may like the high shit, - but if your teaching someone and being a mentor then you should know all of it!!!

    SL v Freefall

after a post by a UK friend in response to someone saying they cant freefall they aint interested and this apparently is "purist"...... I am curious. I myself have never SL'd a jump, as I am with the thought that I would prefer to freefall and not interested in SL. BUT I know people and seen the vids of some very cool SL jumps..... I am just not into SL jumping....... Purist? why is SL not pure? to me a BASE jump is jumping from a fixed object with a parachute, "FIXED OBJECT JUMPING" - mcconkeys, tards etc are still BASE jumps... you must still know about winds, and the technical aspect of the canopy in the effects of winds around your environment, you must still evaluate the evnironment you and your parachute are in to make a sucessful jump......... I beleive I am a purist, in that I would argue whether a tethered ballon is a BASE jump, or a cutaway from a paraglider is a BASE jump..... to some a low altitude parachute deployment is a BASE jump....... to some it aint...... in the end, BASE is about not having rules or restrictions........ and to say its not a "pure" BASE jump if you SL is slightly narrow minded........ In the end we are all "low altitude parachute deployment scientists" - BASE is just something to give us a name to the fun we have! would be interested in others thoughts about a bulshit subject.......... just go out have fun and who gives a shit! LOW ALTITUDE PARACHUTE DEPLOYMENT SCIENTISTS UNITE!!
  11. the ease of getting into BASE nowadays is going to increase this sort of thing. It seems that anyone with 250 skydives and some cash can go and do a FJC. I keep trying to stress that the lack of fundamental knowledge, skill and ethics is lacking in some of the newer jumpers I have seen / spoken to. Now I only have a limited amount of time in BASE (2+ years) but before I did my FJC I had spent 2 years previous learning everything I could, getting the skills I needed and speaking to active jumpers......... at the time I thought this was the norm, it seems not to be. People are getting hurt left right and center due to poor canopy skills and lack of knowledge (I have heard of many people mis-rigging for slider up jumps) - fundamental knowledge and skills are lacking alot! I seriously beleive that this is an issue at the moment in BASE that is largely going ignored, with the advent of BASE#1000 I think many people illequiped are jumping a path they are not prepared for........ I hope I am wrong, but I feel a dark time heading towards us........ BASE jumping is not cool, and its not forgiving........... just my 2 busted bones worth!
  12. birdman jumps - hell there are too many of these, and they all look same. BASE jumps - hell there are too many of these, and they all look the same my point here is surely what you have been exposed too depends on what you find interesting?
  13. just enjoy the groundrush.....................
  14. Skydiving H: 17,500 L: 1,100 (freefall on my main) BASE H: 3,000 L: 210 freefall I would love to do some skydives from above 20k...... I just think the play time would be so cool........
  15. shit, most of my Sunday jumping was done hung over to hell.......... once I vomitted out of the door before take off I felt so rough, I have to admit though, after about a year of doing that I realised it was not much fun and that it was a waste to skydive so woolly in the head................. its actually a great feeling being at the DZ feeling chipper whilst people around you feel so shit!!
  16. Here in the UK, my company private health care is paying for my surgeries and recovery for what is well known to everyone as a BASE injury. My death in service insurance (which my sister and GF get 50% of each of 5 times my gross yearly salary) will be paid out if I die parachuting.......... For those that think that "it wont happen to me" - well you really are so arrogant.......... I have seen some really top skilled, safe jumpers get hurt from a slight mistake...........Dont be arrogant and sat in recovery wondering how the hell you are going to survive on on less than 10% of your normal salary....or non should be be self employed........believe me it sucks...............
  17. I am still recovering from an injury (3 months) and have been unable to get to work. I have recenlty been moved to Statutory Sick Pay - which in the UK is £13 per day gross ($24 per day). This is certainly not something I am able to afford to be on (this wont even cover my rent). To get a taxi to work each day will actually cost me almost my intire net salary in a month - so financially this is not viable to do. Although this was done on a BASE jump and not skydiving, I still dont have any protection or insurance to cover me. I have recently enquired about this, but I am yet to find one to cover specifically for BASE jumping - if I do I imagine the cost of this will be quite unbeleivable. To jump without insurances / income protection is a little stupid, but like someone says sometimes its just not possible for some individuals. You may not think you will need it, but surely its worth taking out just incase hey! Either that or make sure you have enough contingency to cover any substantial time out of work.
  18. sometimes I dream about having sex with famous women, sometimes I dont.......... Does this mean sometimes I will or does it mean sometimes I wont? What does a dream mean? nothing..... dreams are just dreams...........
  19. thought I recognised that rig................ Think I saw you in the pen at hinton last weekend whislt I was in DZ control hobbling on my crutches................
  20. remember I live in the UK................... last time I jumped from a 24 story building we were on the roof way above the last floor and it was 240ft to the exit........... so dont give me that shit........for the skydivers quick to try and correct me.....(let me guess last time you went around measuring B's!!)......... well done, you must feel so proud.........jesus.........................
  21. or if you speak with an Aussie accent then freefall it!!
  22. 15th floor is probably nearing 150 - 170ft................. what gear are you thinking you could do this with?
  23. 15th floor? so what gear you using? what deployment method you thinking?
