Have you seen premature brake releases on cloth stub toggles? I've only seen it happen with pin toggles. Yes I have seen 2 brake fires with the cloth stub toggles (one from 400ft Freefall 2 sec delay and one from a 225ft freefall 1 sec delay). Not sure what the end result of investigation was. There was no injury from these.

Thats some quick recovery! Nice one........... Just be careful.................. no point in making a handful of jumps not fully recovered only to put yourself out for longer than needed............... Soft landings............

For those of us that dont like the whole Big group and spectator side of the sport, Perhaps offer nights where there are a few guards with paint ball guns with the aim to gain access and jump without being "splatted" with a shot - just to give the people that want the whole enter, escape and evade concept, something to flick their switches........... kinda like paint ball or lazer quest for BASE! hehehe In fact this could be a good training aid to for the more "giggling like a child" side of BASE....... hehehehe Stealth BASE training............

In my first year as a jumper I questioned the need for the LRM, I know some people are so confident with the TG that they dont jump with the LRM. My thoughts were if you are not likely to get a LO then surely not having the LRM would be more benifical for a break fire (which is probably more common). After discussion with many and much more experienced jumpers I decided against jumping without the LRM. I dont have a problem landing on rears should I have a breakfire, and if I have a lineover on a SD jump even with the TG (as has happened) then surely popping and dropping is quicker than getting a hook knife and cutting. If I have a LO SD then generally I am opening (or used to) at anything from 50ft to 200ft and I would rather pop and drop from these altitudes than try and cut and control - if you are worried about landing on rears, then you should practice some more, landing on rear risers should never be an issue you cant deal with. I would rather use a TG and LRM as 2 cures of a problem (although the TG is not exaclty a cure of LO but of Tail Inversion) are going to be better than only 1........... IMHO

whats the difference between a good 4 way team and a bad 4 way team? if they go in trying to turn out the last point, the bad four way team goes thump,thump,thump,thump...... and the good 4 way team goes THUMP ..........well the joke goes something like that anyway..................

thanks, The products I have been to see are reasonable, but I dont get on well with sales people trying to push things onto me, so I am still unsure their product is something worthwhile for the company I am trying to help with their accounting processes and controls. Basically, I am looking for a product that will scan invoices (around 30 different formats) and extract certain data from it. I then wish to dump it into XL either through text files or straight to the application, where I am then able to create the VBA to convert the data to something useful. I am not very familiar with this area of software, so dont know exactly what is needed for my requirements. I have seen various companies, some more toward the document management areas and some more toward the data extraction. Ideally a module based package would be needed, as this company is looking to expand and I think the document management and work flow areas of these products would be benefical. As you are involved in this field, perhaps you could advise on the problems and headaches you encountered with using these sorts of products. Thanks Michael

Hinton UK - Not the place I once knew.....
BASE813 replied to BASE813's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Hello Ernie, firstly, if you reread my post you will see that the tone of it was not "throwing my toys out" - it was a genuine report of the way I had felt. Surely customers are allowed to report on the businesses they have had experiences with? Second, this is not the first time where skydivers have got annoyed with the DZ - I remember several times where tandems come first and skydivers third (and yes i know its a business and its being run like this and I should not be surprised) So are you saying the cameramen and tandem masters that were told "no bpa no jumping" had the same percieved service as you? or was it that you turned up late and after such time it was apparent that the ruling was unfair and was bent slightly? People with BPA emails and BPA web proof were not allowed in the morning, so why does your situation disprove all the other many many grumbles of such a ruling? Are you telling me I dont know how to get jumps in at a DZ? After speaking to many people that still jump at the DZ saying "easily" 10 jumps in is really exagerated. It still is a Tandem Factory, and although this is not a bad thing as this is how the owners choose to run the place (I mean we all have to earn money), it is unfair to treat loyal customers in certain ways. One other thing, I was not manifested, as I was taking my BASE canopy from my container and rigging it to a dual parachute system when I was "told" I was on the first C206 load.... this is when I turned round and said "huh, but I am not ready" - This is blatently not my fault. Ernie, get your facts right before you try once again to slate me in a public forum - I have disliked you ever since you basically said I was dangerous because I BASE jump here on DZ after people were discusssing your complete fuck up............... Nice words Ernie! I have received reports that locals believe I have thrown the dummy in writing this post - mmm, if they actually took time to read it they would see I was just writing a personal view of a DZ on a forum that people write personal thoughts and reviews on. I never once slagged people off (hell I even admit that its their perogative to do things in a certain way), and never once took an aggressive stance - just look at the title - its just not the place I once knew, just a non agressive personal view - which makes the agression I have heard about being focused my way all the more reason I wont be spending my money there again. Edit to add: I have tried 6 other UK dropzones (not including Hib which everyone rates as the top skydiving DZ) and this DZ rates low for skydiving but [praise here look]fucking high for social life [/praise here look] - but what do you want? I guess it comes down to what you want from your skydiving?! -
Has anyone had any experience in OCR scanning software with excel? Without going into boring detail, I have recently been looking at various data capture software that I can be used with excel to convert to various formats to enable uploading to an accounts system and to also use internally created price lists to run automated checks. The companies I am looking into rolling this sort of system out are spending masses of time in processing and checking, and I am sure this sort of system would be beneficial. Does anyone have experience with this sort of set up? and if so what are the short falls you found with data extraction from scanning? For information, I am not that familar with the scanning software, but from what I have seen (or have been shown from the sales reps I have met with) it seems to produce reasonable file formats that I would be able to use with XL VBA. It also comes with a document management system to allow retrieval of the images, but the only downside I see of this is that they have to be indexed manually. Just curious as I have not been able to meet with anyone that has used this sort of thing, and have only seen it with a sales rep trying to smchooze me to their product. Thanks for any experiences.............

have PM'd you, Being a non techie boy, I hope its what you are after?!?!?!

I have found that most people with an unvalved canopy have problems standing it up in fast conditions.............. I thought this might be something to do with the air spilling from the vents on flaring and loosing a bit of performance............ but maybe my thinking is wrong? Edit to add: I see someone else posted the same thought.............

I did not say my reasons and figures were accurate, but it is what I personally give myself, If you think you are going to walk away from each jump then you have to rethink, you will have a jump where you are injured, or worse. If I expect each jump I have a chance of 50% that I could be injured on this jump then I stay more alert and scare myself................ I find this approach healthy, not accurate........ and its just a personal thing, not everyones "cup o' tea" and no its not my fat shaking - its the fucking muscles after climbing up a ladder!!! McLazy (as known in several countries)

Please could someone convert this to run on Windows?! This would be such a kick ass tool! Love it! Nice one

incomplete data can be really skewed depending on the sample you are getting the data from. Drawing it from the net is already going to give you misleading figures. There is no way you are going to get a reasonable confidence level with data drawn from the net from a handful of BASE jumpers with their own personal thoughts. As you say, drawing data from sectors and having a control over it will draw more realistic results (although not 100% (as this is impossible unless you ask everyone) you can still draw a reasonable confidence level from it as long as you get a good set of data... (asking Americans to estimate how many jumpers there are in the UK and how many jumps they are doing is worthless, as would be a UKer doing the same on the US scene) I think this is actually doable, and more accurate than posting a poll on DZ dot com where the results are going to actually voted on by people that dont even know many jumpers or even jump themselves?, perhaps someone would like to take this on? just my additional worthless thoughts...........
-
I read someone say "I give myself 50/50 on each jump" and I have to admit, I give myself these odds for either an injury or death each jump......... it keeps me scared and keeps me focused............ and besides, when you are really scared, you land with a bigger buzz!! I love having vertigo and giving myself these odds as i walk away from each and every jump REALLY buzzing! no matter what jump I am doing!

without a decent sample its hard to assume. I know people who are jumpers who will make 10 a year, I know peope that will do 150 a year. Saying there are 1000 or 2000 active in the world is misleading. What do you deem active? In my eyes, active is jumping weekly or bi-weekly or monthly. There are people out there that only ever do trips to legal objects, there are people that only ever do one jump a month off their local. There are so many variables in this sort of question it will be impossible to nail down any worthwhile data. This is like the governement trying to estimate how many illegal immigrants are living in the country or how many people are taking Ecstacy each weekend - there is no real way to sample the data accuratly with any decent confidence level in the results. I would not even try and hazard a guess on how many jumpers there are in the world, never mind how many jumps are being made. Maybe get people to estimate the number of jumpers in their country / local / area and then build up a more accurate picture of how many jumpers there are in the world? Just my worthless thoughts on it...............
