  1. Hey, not to trivialize the whole human rights debate going on here, but does anyone have a mirror, I want to see that, and the link is dead. You guys are as bad as Fark of /. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  2. Well, what do you know? Looks like I will be there too. Yeah, I have not posted in ages, but I guess this is a good post to drop back in with. I should be there for 3 days or so. I will show up with AggieDave, Youngin17 and a few others. And I really don't feel like reading all 50 pages of thread so I guess dave will fill me in on any fun dz.com plans. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  3. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU It is slightly amusing that a girl had the link right at the 'tip of her tongue' Thanks. I saved it this time. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  4. I knew the subject line would get some attention. Several months ago, there was a picture of some freelfiers (the flyboyz I think) docking on a girls naked boobie during freefly. I wanted to show a buddy this picture, but I cannot find it anywhere. And of course searching the forums for 'boobie' is like looking for a hay in a haystack. Thanks -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  5. No, now it is perfectly legit to climb. You check in with park rangers before heading up. They have some guidlelines where they ask that you think twice about climbing in June due to religious holidays and significance for Indians, but they are not mandatory. As a matter of fact, a 6yr old holds the record for youngest climber to scale it. http://haskell.cs.yale.edu/jcp/devilstowernews.html -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  6. Well there would be a bit more distance to allow for advanced transitions. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  7. Well, make a jump, we will be in the same sky. Just doing a Texas size campfire. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  8. Lets get this straight, we are skydivers, and we meet weird people? -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  9. Actually, it is a big climbing hotspot. What is the thing on your back? Oh that is just my quick deploy climbing recovery system...we are doing testing on it :) On a somewhat related note, I had a friend at Grayson that went to Iowa state years ago. He had a classmate there that was an avid Harley rider, climber, and smoker. He would climb Devil's tower every year during Sturgis and leave a stash there to dry out for next year's smoke. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  10. I am heading to Sturgis in a week and among other great scenery will see Devil's Tower, Crazy Horse, and Mt. Rushmore. It kinda got me wondering if anyone has ever based Devil's Tower. Anyone ever heard of that? It is 876' tall, and I am not sure about landing outs, but seems like it would be a sweet base. -- All the flaming and trolls of wreck dot with a pretty GUI.
  11. This sounds pretty interesting, and I think I can kinda understand what he is saying, but can someone elaborate on this a little bit? malachi
  12. Well drenaline, I will attempt to answer, I am not at all a canopy expert and I usually fly at 1.1, although I have been demoing a Cobaly at 1.4. I agree with Lisa, that this seems a bit late (high in wing loading) to be learning. But since her post was totally unconstructive, I will at least attempt to tell you about 'flare turns.' I assume when you say 'flare turns' you mean a turn that goes directly into a flare. If so, then the name is pretty explanatory. These are sometimes necessary when you find yourself in a tight place and you don't have many choice between downwinding or hooking into a splat landing. You should use a flat turn. This is done with slow, steady increase in one toggle in the direction of turn. You do not want rapid movement, since if you are using this manuveur you are too close to the ground all ready. This should allow a a turn, that is closer to a pivot than a hook, if that makes any sense. Your canopy will change heading, but not lose altitude significantly. However, remember any turn under canopy will change your aerodynamics and initiate some altitude loss. The next step is stopping the turn, leading into a flare. This is done, by slowing bringing the opposite toggle down to match the first one. Then if necessary, you will evenly continue the flare of botth toggles. So instead of returning to full flight and surging forward, you go into a flare while in a flat turn. This will stop your heading change. I hope that all makes sense it writing, try it high, and I think you will pick it up. A few things to remember: usually if you have to do this, your landing was a close call, either due to your setup or obstacles. So, don't necessary plan on it, but I can say it helps, especially if you ever get cut off in the traffic pattern close to the ground. Secondly, don't turn too long or too fast. A nice flat turn requires slow and steady pressure on the toogle, not a quick yank. As for turning too long, take what you can get, if you are running out of altititude, don't try to make the last 20 degrees into the wind if that means landing in a turn. Remember some DZs, you can never land directly into the wind due to geography, so take what you can get, fly the best landing flare you can, and walk away. Malachi
  13. I just found this, it is pretty cool: http://www.shockwave.com/sw/content/freefall The landing is kinda unrealistic, you can just keep hooking toward target. And freefall is a little hard to control, it is hard to tell what plane the skydiving is on in relation to the clouds. Still kinda cool. Malachi
  14. I agree. I think this movie was far better than TPM. But....I dont think it measured up to the first three (in the 70s). Chances are after two attempts, the first three episodes never will in my book. I will balance that by saying I am not a HUGE Star Wars fan, and I think LOTR is much better. Yes, I know that will start a flame war. But the truth of the matter is, either due to directing or actors themselves, the portrayal of human emotion just is not there. Or maybe it is too there, almost brutish, clumsy. There were a few moments were I thought man, this is so cliche. Like, the love scenes, the silhuette shot of Boba holding the helmet, Windu saying "we are not soldiers." That being said...the movie did kick ass. And Yoda freaking...well...I am speechless. So yes, I liked it. But I think it was due largely to increased 'aggressive negotiations'
  15. I thought that there was supposed to be a CASA at Skydive houston on the first weekend in june, and one at Spaceland on the third weekend. But, now I cannot find anything to proof. Anyone else? malachi
  16. Well I am certainly not experienced, but I have a Sabre 210 and I do recreationaly crew with it. As a matter of fact a lot of people in Texas call it "Sabre CRW" when using recreational canopies. I would definitely not do any rotation or advanced stuff. But you could pull of some smaller stacks and downplanes. Malachi
  17. Congrats Dave, again. It was good watching you guys yesterday, and drinking at the Bird again. Here is to many more summer trips to NorthGate in the next several decades. I am sure your other buddies are saying, "Good bye, and thanks for all the fish." p.s. Going for a Douglas Adams thing there, but I just realized in relation to the Corps it has more meanings. Cool. Malachi
  18. Dave, I believe Dan said in an earlier thread, that with enough interest, they would produce a 190. malachi
  19. Are you a regular on Mad Onion? Malachi
  20. Assuming that his camera has an output jack that is either RCA or a special cable that ends in RCA, jack that out to a computer with a video capture card. If you don't have that, in theory you could RCA to a VCR, then input from the VCR to a TV-in card in a computer. But remember with each step, you lose quality, even even going straight RCA into the computer, will not yield quality like DV. Of course if it is an older camcorder, you probably will not notice much of a difference. Malachi
  21. Really? though that kinda makes sense. Anyone else have more info on this? Malachi
  22. Ditto to that. I roll 4 cells on each side, tuck them in the center cell and also roll my tail at least 3 or 4 turns. I like a slow opening, and I jump a sabre 210. I have had arguments about how you cannot roll a Sabre. Well to each his own, but I have had nothing but bad luck with opening, unless I roll. However, do not do this on a subterminal jump....you will be watching it for a while
  23. Said to say, but I definitely echo that. I have definitely met many uncool jumpers. Malachi
  24. Props to Dave on this thread. You got quite a following there bud. But I was gonna ask about the thing that almost everyone missed. Isn't the question amibiguous? I thought geek and cool were the same thing. I am pretty sure they are. I think you are confusing nerds with geeks. We are the ones that figure out how things work, so we can fix things when they break. The next time IT or your kid helps you with something that challenged you, or some little techno-goody makes your life eaiser, then think about how cool we are. Us geeks need loving too, circuity has its limits. As for Dave, I have known him since about 13, he is definitely both. Malachi
