My speculation: She knows you're his friend, she probably feels like crap about it but doesn't have the guts to tell him. So, she figures by telling you that he'll find out and then amidst all the fallout from that she can focus her energy away from being upset with herself for screwing up to being upset with you for not keeping it a secret. My solution: Insist she come clean about it, but short of that a friend's confidence is a friend's confidence. Having a heirarchy of friends to which some are extended the basics and others not is kinda loony

This is perfect for a 4-way fun jump, I'll just get my friends in it with me... what's the worst that could happen? the ffers kick us out the door?

So sucking at packing is normal at first, right?
champu replied to schattenjaeger's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
people sometimes commentate from one of the couches near the packing area as I pack because I'm so slow, generally they get a disgusted look and a middle finger in reply Don't worry about it, I've gotten faster, and am still getting faster. I'm not afraid to miss a load because I'm still packing. Besides, now I'm only the forth or so slowest person at my dropzone, so the peanut gallery has moved on -
First Cutaway OR Why I hate Whuffo's! (Long)
champu replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This actually has me really curious now. I can understand locals getting upset if you land in their corn field and take out a few rows under a main (when more likely than not it could have been prevented) but trying to extort someone who just had a cutaway... sigh, some people. what kind of recourse does one have for getting their stuff back in a situation like this? is it just a matter of apealing to the person's kinder half (supposing they have one?) As far as the main goes, if the guy went and got my main off a roof and brought it back to me without trying to hold it hostage, I'd probably buy him some beer for the trouble. the kids? argh I'd rather lose my freebag in a swamp in south florida than know the only reason I didn't have it is because of a bunch of meddling half-pints -
I haven't heard it but I can only guess at it's nature. If it's what I think it is, I know several jokes that are probably similar. It's the only type of joke I know that can instill such disgust amongst those who have heard it.

if the bullets were tumbling end over end as oppsed to spinning along the axis of travel as they would be if they had been fired wouldn't this instability effect their velocity?

this reminds me of the "seatbelts can kill, I'd rather be thrown clear of the wreckage" arguement

geez, the first thing you learn in any statistics class is correlation does not automatically mean causation... that said... AH! MARRIAGE! RUN AWAY!

you can read about licenses in further detail here: http://uspa.org/publications/SIM/2004SIM/section3.htm#31e

most dropzones will let you jump with just your A license, you can't do things like jump at night yet. Some dropzones with a lot of water nearby my also require water training. I think that's pretty much it. Just bring your license, logbook, and reserve packing card. You can jump with basically anyone who is willing to jump with you. If your's is anything like my dropzone you can pretty much just manifest yourself, and without really even trying you'll end up in some kind of group skydive. Actually, after this weekend I've realized it's actually difficult to do solo jumps, even if that's what you had in mind... "what the hell do you mean you're doing a solo sit?"

put up posters of someone in a hospital with a broken femur with the bold caption "100 jumps + 1.6lbs/sqft = irresponsible"? I think someone loading a stiletto too highly when they have 200 jumps, and a person with 35 jumps buying any canopy loaded too heavily are two different problems. I think talking to the people buying their first main is a big responsiblity of the DZO and the S&TA. The dangers of loading a canopy too heavily should be further engrained into the first jump courses being tought, all the way straight through coached jumps. It's people who flew their 1:1 sabres or triathalons for a couple hundred jumps and want to get a 1.6 stiletto that I think would be more applicable targets of a less formal wingloading safety campaign. Not sure what such a campaign would entail though...

I would love to see a cubs/redsox world series, the yankees and the marlins can go play golf or something

Wingsuit fatality story link posted on FARK, ignorance ensues

the entire fark.com/somethingawful.com subculture is not worth bothering yourself with -
taking a pass is harder than just going along with it a lot of times. I was in clewiston back in june to demo a rig I was planning to buy with a main canopy I'd never jumped before. I was manifested, geared up, and on a 1 minute call, and as I watched people "land" in the wind that had picked up in the last 10 minutes or so I got uncomfortable about the jump. So I stepped out of line from boarding the plane and took myself off the load. I say it's a good move on your part. Sure it might have gone fine, but remeber, it's -always- better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, then in the air wishing you were on the ground.

1:6:0 6 jumps (four sits, one 3 way, one 5 way, all very amusing) no beer owed one chicago baseball team going to the national league championships

Information on skydiving related injuries
champu replied to thechad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have to agree, I don't care for spouted fatality numbers or other random statistics that try to convince people one way or the other about skydiving. I'm the head of the skydiving club at my university. If people ask me if skydiving is dangerous, I tell them it's a hazardous sport, we do everything we can to minimize risk, but at the end of the day, yes, you can get seriously injured or killed. -
I think you should have to watch Cutaway as part of the first jump course classroom training... it would be a great demostration of the rich culture and atmosphere of skydivers

I banged my knee on the edge of the door on an exit once , but that left a bruise, nothing more. I've torn up that area right above my finger nails changing broken rubberbands

why do people "give each other skin" in the plane?
champu replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Yeah, we generally always give some skin (or glove, depending on the time of year we're talking about) to the tandem students. helps reinforce the friendly atmosphere. I'll sometimes give random tandem students high-fives after they land too. -
I got a rig, I got a rig! :D

I took a flat packing course at my home dropzone, but never really used or practiced that method. When I got my first rig down in palm beach, I was taught how to pro-pack it immediately. I'd say the sooner the better, and make sure you understand each step so you're not just going through the motions.

I think that thing you used to do in gym class with the round parachute and the beach balls on top of it was pretty gay... ...does anyone remember the point of that game?
-
ah but have you ever tackled someone to get the last cup of coffee out of the pot at work? yeah, me neither.

I've reached the point where I genearlly don't mention skydiving to people I'm first meeting. I actually try my best not to bring it up. Not just girls you have some interest in, but everyone. Occasionally it makes it's way out there anyway... them: "c'mon out with us Saturday afternoon! it'll be great!" me: "uh, I sorta have plans." them: "well then, next Saturday!" me: "uh, yeah... I have plans every Saturday." Personally, I'd rather find a skydiver. In that regard I figured what I'm hearing in this thread, it will probably net you some points, it prolly can't hurt your cause anyway. in in the end though, just keep saying to yourself "geeks with death wishes"
