  1. OK, let's say you're walking down a public street in the US (not driving a motor vehicle, which requires a license) and are stopped and asked to prove your citizenship. But dang, you left your wallet, with your Official Government-issued Citizenship Card and your driver's license at home. Solely for that, you're arrested and taken down to the police station. If you don't have a problem with that, then you're willing to live in a different United States of America than I am. There are other ways to verify your status. 1) Social Security Number: Do you know what your social security number is? (We had to memorize ours in the 4th grade) SSN could be substituted with green card number, passport, or anything that applies. 2) Do you know what your drivers liscense is? (I thought it was a good idea to memorize it, just in case it was lost or stolen - perhaps I am the only one in the world smart enough to figure this one out) 3) Do you know what your state issued ID card number is? (Not a requirement, but most people have them if they want to do anything like cashing a check or - I dunno - have a job) Do you know that there are computers that can pull up that information in the DPS vehicle? They should also have the picture that goes along with that ID info. You CAN NOT be that naive! You have to know that there are other ways of verification. This guy walking down the street doesn't need a drivers license, ID card, check cashing card or any other "papers". Unless he's breaking a law there is no reason to be stopped by anyone in the first place....even/especially to provide proof of citizenship. I don't think we really want to go down that road. I have no problem with discovering his immigration status and dealing with that issue after he's detained or arrested in the course of an investigation for an actual infraction or crime.
  2. And if you've read any of my posts in all the immigration threads, you'd know that I've specifically debunked this talking point, as naive, about 23 times. Do a search; I'm tired of typing it. What about the 2nd half or Darius11's post? What is your idea of a reasonable way to enforce our immigration laws? Or should we scrap immigration law as it exists and re-write it? How should illegals who are already here be brought into compliance? Blanket amnesty,... again? Should (specifically, Mexican) immigrants be given something like "refugee" status considering their "government" which is either corrupt or utterly incompetent? Also, if Darius11's first paragraph is just a "naive" talking point, how is the absense of the law (that "clearly states that the police can only ask about someone's immigration status if they have already broken the law") going to protect people from being profiled and stopped by the same racist police?
  3. OK, here is a quick graphic representation of the political "spectrum" as I perceive it (somewhat). Does the graph make sense to anyone else or is it complete nonsense to you? I've tried to give examples of where various systems might lie on the graph. Doe these assignments seem reasonable?
  4. "Yep, son, we have met the enemy and he is us." edit to add: Pogo was a 'possum... the alligator was Albert.
  5. You sure she wasn't trying to get rid of you?
  6. Because you seem to be unable to relate to opinions other than you own. I'll say for the umpteenth time, i used mcdonalds as an example as it is an american company that has invested more on quality in the over seas market than it has in its own country. This says a lot about the market demand there. I don't expect you to understand, but at ;east i have attempted to inform you. I'm over it, you guys can have your lifestyle and I'll have mine. I think that here McD has hollowed out a niche over the past 50 years that has so defined the company that it would be hard to get the general public to think of them any other way. They have begun to offer a more healthful selection, but it is still McDonalds in most people's minds. If I want "cafe-type" fare there are so many other options that the last place I would think about is McDonalds. I know they now offer latte's and such. But I would not even think about them unless I was in the store for a quick burger and fries and just happened to see them offered. Actually, before my kid was born I hadn't even been inside a McDonalds more than a very few times over the years since I was a kid. Even now, only 3-4 times a month. They do, BTW, have a reasonably good, cheap breakfast.
  7. Next time try to dream that you are with a companion that you can outrun.

  9. for goodness sake - lets talk about BBQ - I am hungry. To through in my lot, I am going to say that Southern Africa have the best BBQ (but better call it by its "proper" name Braai! Lots of steak and boerewors with decent beer! PS my best braai experiences have been "in the bush" with logs/folding chairs for seating and no porcelain in sight! Yeah, I can see where you'd need porcelain seating after eating a McRib. (I know that's not what you meant, but I couldn't resist.) Never tried SA BBQ but a friend shared some of his springbok jerky that he received as a "care package" from home. ...MMMMMMMMMM!
  10. It's hard for me to believe that "McDonalds" (or McAnything) is even being mentioned in any discussion about "Best BBQ", whatever the context. The McRib sandwich disqualifies them and they should be banished from even attempting BBQ.......forever, as far as I'm concerned!
  11. "Up!... Down!... Arch!" "What was that Indian's naaaammmmee?!" "Make room for the ______!"
  12. "Saving Silverman" Here's one you'll never get: " " (That quote is heard throughout the picture) -- from one of the most innovative, controversial and incendiary films ever made.

  14. You are correct sir. It's the same principle that makes Chinese food taste better with chopsticks. As to why I put it in SC. This place has the best flame wars and I like stirring the pot (pun intended) from time to time. .......and this thread has earned it's right to reside in the SC and is on it's way to SC hall of fame! I like good BBQ as well as the next guy.... but dayem!
  15. Nice article and picture here.
  16. Not necessarily.....but you may be making yourself an easy target for any "blame" by assuming you are always the one. (Sometimes, everyone else in the group goes low and the good-looking Spanish girl will tell you that you can't skydive)
  17. Like they say......there're some things even a pig won't do.

    Same Guy?

Nope! The guy on the right looks way too old to be the same guy! Might be his grandfather, though!

  20. My siblings and I were kids when my dad was transferred to Enid, OK in 1960. I was the oldest at 10. One night my mother awakened all the kids and said we were going to sleep in the hall. We laid on the floor and she placed mattresses against the walls to pull down onto us if there was trouble. I got up and went into the living room to see what was going on and in the lightning flashes I saw a tornado that, I swear, looked like the one on The Wizard of OZ. Worse, I saw the guy across the street with a CD hat on directing people into shelters....and we didn't have one! I was one scared kid! They say that tornado hopped completely over the town and continued on doing no damage to Enid.
  21. Thank you all for your service. You are brothers and sisters regardless of the branches and the era in which you served. .....and regardless of your widely varied political convictions. I have to say that not having served in the armed forces has been one of my regrets and I do view that choice as a life mistake. Once again, thanks for your dedication and sacrifice for your country.
