There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998
brenthutch replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east-asia/beijing-records-coldest-morning-in-more-than-five-decades OK, we have deadly, record breaking cold in North America, Europe and Asia. That pretty much covers the Northern Hemisphere. But by all means keep regurgitating the tired, now falsified theory of “warming is causing the record cold.” -

Yes, deadly record breaking cold across the hemisphere is just what AGW theory predicted. -
We will have a man (or woman) on Mars long before we have enough energy storage to get off of fossil fuels. The pie in the sky is large scale energy storage, not humans on Mars.

http://www.ercot.com/news/releases/show/225151 “We are experiencing record-breaking electric demand due to the extreme cold temperatures that have gripped Texas," said ERCOT President and CEO Bill Magness. "At the same time, we are dealing with higher-than-normal generation outages due to frozen wind turbines and limited natural gas supplies available to generating units.” Too many worthless windmills and not enough fossil fuel. End result? $9000 per megawatt hour. -

Record cold (not caused by global warming) grips the heartland. https://weather.com/safety/winter/news/2021-02-14-record-cold-temperatures-plains-midwest-february -
That argument did cross my mind however I abandoned it because we currently utilize much of the plant matter that would have the potential to become fossil fuel in the future. I didn’t consider the time value as it was a moot point in my analysis but give you full marks for your observation. BTW I am still waiting for Phil1111 to explain how Germany which is dependent on importing more than 70% of its energy needs is ahead of the US with regard to energy independence.

It’s not my assertion, it is Cuomo’s you’ll have to take it up with him.

Probably a lot less https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/06/ny-gov-cuomo-says-its-shocking-most-new-coronavirus-hospitalizations-are-people-staying-home.html

Coal combustion products are recycled into plant food and drywall. Zero cost for plant food and very little for the drywall.

How well did those mitigation’s work for them?

Some, human bodies. The VAST majority of COVID cases have symptoms that are either mild or nonexistent. My son had a friend over yesterday who recently had covid, the only reason they knew he had it was he was exposed and subsequently tested positive, no symptoms, tested again positive, still no symptoms, tested again....cleared. What happens if the vaccines don’t work on the new mutations? Wait another year for a new batch of vaccines? Lockdowns to COVID is what abstinence was to AIDS. It works in the abstract, just not in reality.

Coal is needed to make solar panels, steel and cement so it’s not going away anytime soon and what we don’t use we ship overseas. Steel is economically recycled that is why it is not piling up in landfills. The same can not be said for solar panels which cost 10X more to recycle then the value of what is recovered.

Ask the thousands of families that have lost a child to the flu, if flu is irrelevant?
-
The answer is easy, just not very palatable. As the top climate change official in Massachusetts said, “Let me say that again, 60 percent of our emissions that need to be reduced come from you — the person across the street, the senior on fixed income,” he said. “There is no bad guy left, at least in Massachusetts, to point the finger at, turn the screws on, and, you know, break their will, so they stop emitting. That’s you. We have to break your will.”
-
So we both agree that during the last year of the Trump administration we were a net exporter of petroleum products yet somehow I am wrong? You also failed to mention our exports of coal, which very much makes us a net exporter of fossil fuels. (Just as I said) https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/coal/imports-and-exports.php Now I’m not sure how long that will last give the current administration’s war on fossil fuels. Can you explain, just how is Germany more energy independent than the US given they import 71% of their energy?
-
Reality check Because of fracking, the US is a net EXPORTER of fossil fuels OTOH Germany IMPORTS massive amounts of natural gas from Russia and depends on French electricity to stabilize its power grid. https://www.eia.gov/international/analysis/country/DEU ”Germany relies heavily on imports to meet most of its energy demand. In 2019, energy imports accounted for 71% of the German energy supply.” So, you call importing 71% = independence?

Kallend must be right about my reading comprehension, because that sentence makes no sense to me.

There is no such thing as zero risk. Do we lock down and mandate masks for flu season? The flu kills thousands every year, young children are especially vulnerable and flu vaccines are not as effective as COVID vaccines.
-
And that is why they have the highest electricity prices in the EU. EUR.30 kWh.

Wouldn’t it be better to protect the vulnerable, with vaccines and isolation and let the folks who are not at risk go on with their lives. The lockdowns are destroying more lives than they are saving. Millions of children are being denied an education millions of people are loosing their livelihoods. If the lockdowns worked as advertised, we would see a large difference between areas with community spread that are locked down and areas that are not, but we don’t. What do we do if the vaccines are ineffective against the dozen or so mutations of COVID? Do we stay locked down forever?
