  1. no biggie Lucie, I started 2 yrs ago @ 45. Welcome to the skies. Good luck, Be Safe, Larry
  2. you can go to x-keys or the Ranch on nice days to stay current, both DZ's have alot of great talented coaches who jump all year.
  3. Welcome to a sport 2nd to none, don't fret the age thing, I started 2 yrs ago @ 45. In some respect its a good thing because one tends to be a little more careful @ our age (NOT saying the younger ones are less careful) just that the yungins heal quicker than us after a crash and burn. Good luck and enjoy. it aint a mid life crisis but a mid life "YES INDEEDY"
  4. CONSUMER ALERT! Beware of the Middle Man. In the recent months many websites have popped up selling gift certificates for skydiving. They claim to be operating a skydiving center in the local area and make claims that they have the highest safety record and use the best equipment when in fact they are nothing more than a middle man selling certificates redeemable at local Skydiving Schools. This adds additional markup and confusion to a fairly straight forward process. Things to look for on a website: No Hidden Fees Many times you will see a price indicated on the web site which appears cheaper than the competition, but when you call and finalize your purchase you find there are additional fees. These additional fees often make what appeared to be a great deal more expensive. Our Pricing Policy is simple. NO HIDDEN FEES. The prices indicated on our website include everything to complete your first skydive, and video if purchased. Business Address - Although the website appears to represent a local facility you will be unable to find an address on the website. We are located at Calverton Airport... When you call ask them where they are located. Ask about specific information on Facilities and Aircraft - They may claim to have the best aircraft and safety record, but in fact they have no idea what you will be flying in or who you will be jumping with. This is what our DZ put on there website
  5. I called the 800# about a month ago to inquire about sky diving on Long Island and was told that there isnt any on LI because it's too windy. That answer was a product of sour apples because SDLI is not an affiliate. The person on the phone hung up when I gave them an earful. Our DZ and others have been putting a "CONSUMER ALERT" on their websites
  6. If your looking for a master rigger, call Mike Gocke from Skydive Long Island, he is in Levittown. His cell # is 516-713-1590 or email him@ mjrigging@ yahoo.com. He is also an authorized dealer for skydivestore.com. Its a wee bit closer.
  7. If you have the sales skills to convince a whuffo to jump, you could sell sand to an arab & be a millionaire in a year. If you can pull this off, you would have every biz man bidding to hire you, including me.I like your enthusiasm, go for it!!!
  8. Does anyone know when they use the bi-plane @ x-keys or is it a special event. I banged in friday from work and if they do the bi plane I will head south to x-keys, or I might go to the Ranch. I need to get up and out as I didnt jump last weekend. ARRRG!! PS I am going to the Ranch or x-keys friday morn. anyone on the Island (LI) that wants to go just email me. Larry

    costs

The AFF can go anywhere from 2k to 3k depending on the DZ and if you pass every jump. Once your off student status the $ becomes 2nd hand other than buying a rig. Everyone advised me to buy used but I opted to buy new.. I had the $ so I figured do it now. Now that I rambled on,.... it is no different from from scuba, snow skiiing, water skiing, rock climbing. If you really love this sport, go for it brother,.. who gives a shit about the $. What good is that brinks truck following your hearse going to do???
  10. ***what it is they are looking for in the 1st place, or even (more importantly) what they would do if they DID see "ANYTHING"! Duh!! it anit geese, maybe other ppl and yes I can track while on my back in the unlikley event that someone should be above me, again this is not an every jump thing but I will do it when it's needed..... busy skies at another drop zone not knowing others in the sky. I value your jump #'s and experience but IMHO you need to RE evaluate your response. a little more wood on the fire
  11. maybe I should have been more specific. I will flip on back when I am not sure of the traffic. Most jumps I would not need to do this, and I DO give myself extra time for that. Yes to roll on my back @ 3K on every jump is something I wouldnt do
  12. $1900- mirage g3 with the bells & whisles $ 1700 pd 190 $ 900 pd 176 r $ 1175 cypress II $ 180 alti II $ 180 bonehead helmut $ 170 pro dytter $ 200 jumpsuit $ 40 goggles & hook knife Oh jump tickets and beer Welcome to the sport, those figuires become spilled milk after your first jump. Enjoy blue skies
  13. went thru the same thing with sabre190, vacum the floor, put the dogs out and I am ready to go, well after a 15 round KOsabre being the victor, I wanted to cut that miserable piece of nylon in a million pieces. The amount of sweat I dripped on it should have deleted that slippery demon substance (not) Therefore I went with the pay for the 1st 50. It was cheaper than the scissor thingy.
  14. Hey Dan, my last post was in humor.. as for the validity of your post, YES what who have stated is with out a doubt very true, and much to my surprise,
  15. I have already incororated a barrel roll prior to deployment in my skydive. My last post was to thank all who jumped in. I got spanked once, don't spank me again. The advice I recieve here or at the DZ is valuable and keeps me thinking more on every jump I might be posting on something more complex such as wing suit, base, big ways 2 or 3 yrs from now. I was just saying thank you for not letting me learn this on my own. If I ever jump with you (Marks) I will be able to narrate your jump because of your post. I am not stupid but just inexperienced thats why I try to ask questions that makes me & YOU safe
  16. I would like to begin with a huge thanks to "Marks' and Bigun for the "looking up".. Thanks sundevil for the earplug advice which alot of ppl agreed with. Freakflyer.. I will inquire about the "time out audible" and dj-seus.. the finger in the ear thingy, I'll try it but if I get my ass kicked I'll have a bone to pick with you. LMAO Blue skies all, will keep you all posted
  17. QuoteYou might try using ear plugs. I hear my audible better when I wear them. interesting??? I won't question it but will try it and if it works I owe you a case of beer and thats a promise. PS: I spoke to L&B to no avail
  18. I had an audible for 4 jumps but due to my hearing impaired I dont hear it. The ditter has a frequency at approx 8k HZ (high pitch) my hearing shuts off @ 6k and in freefall the loss of hearing is componded. Therefore I was really stupid knowing my visual is my survival tool. I am done beating myself up and now I have become anal with alti awareness
  19. Yes a VERY big lesson learned
  20. I did a 2 way this weekend and the plan was break and track @ 4500. I turned, tracked and just before deploying I generally like to turn to see my jump buddy. I looked left, right, below but not up. Well I spent too much time looking around and yes I lost altitude awareness. I ended up pulling at 2500. thats is low for me and the lowest I have ever pulled. The guy I jumped with told me he pulled in place. He was safe from traffic and so was I but to say you are going to track and not. He didnt have any problems that would prompt his decision. I am just venting as the subject posts states,... it was a stupid mistake for wasting too much time looking for him.
  21. ain't that the truth, thats why I picked firstime for my handle because there will a whole bunch of those beer buying 1st times. Blue skies brother
  22. *** Is that the big change? I wish the USPA had a list of alterations/additions from the 2004 one. Tom Buchanan happens to be a well informed person who sincerely cares about this sport and the well being of all invovled, if you have a gripe take it up with the USPA. 9 years, 47 exits ????
  23. that is a great idea, I was taught EP's but never really reached for my handles in freefall as a mock chop. I have brought my hands to my chest before in order to increase my fall rate but never thought of doing an EP of that nature!!!!
