Have to quit... why is it so hard??
StevePhelps replied to skydv's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My wife is a whuffo -- very afraid of heights & closed places. We've been married for 29 years. Now I wish I was skydiving all that time, but I wasn't. But for the last two years I have made 200 + jumps. She supports me, loves me, and once or twice a year she comes out to the DZ to watch. She tries to join my free spirit. She learned to overcome her claustrophobia and SCUBA dive with me. Skydiving is just a biot too much for her though. However, I spend fun time with her as well. We ride Harleys and go out with whuffo friends. She loves me enough to never ask me to quit, and I love her too much to spend all my time away from her. -
Recently, I have been diagnosed with a veinaculor occlusion in my left eye. Thus my left eye is blurry. Most Drs say it is permanent. I can still see with my right eye. I was wondering, do you know anybody who jumps regularly with vision in only one eye?

Impact of skydiving on your regular life
StevePhelps replied to Mad47's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've never done anything halfway. Joined the Army and went SF, took up running and ran the Mayor's Midnight Sun Marathon, rock climbed at a wall in REI then built one in my garage and climbed with guys who climbed El Cap. Played golf and plotted how I could build my own three hole course. But all those other hobbies passed away over time. Skydiving is the one obsession that seems like it will stick. -

Talk about humbling! Their flying abilities are beyond words.

What you will discover is that some people who have artistic taste value blend over contrast. Others prefer contrasting colors over blend. Its not that either are wrong, just biased. Then there are those who have NO artistic taste whatsoever (like I have no musical ear) www.steve-phelps.com BTW - I like your tribal design. I prefer blends so I'd tone down the background color if it were mine, bust as I said before ... to each his own. Thanks for sharing.

Being from a small DZ and jumping during the week (after tandems, AFF, etc) I flew solo a lot. So, I tried FF. I thought I had it down pretty good, just by reading and practicing. Then I got in the sky with others and realized I was all over the sky. My suggestion is simple -- get good coach jumps.

I have a Hurricane, (as well as Gath) and like it but I'd prefer a Nvertogo after wearing a buddies. Light, fits well and is sleek.

I'm Gonna Miss Her parody by Steve Phelps (with apologies to Brad Paisley & Frank Rogers) Well I love her But I love to jump I spend all day out on this drop zone And hell is all I catch Today she met me at the door Said I would have to choose If I made a jump today She'd be packin' all her things And she'd be gone by noon Well I'm gonna miss her When I get home But right now I'm on this drop zone And I'm packin' my rig I'm sure it'll hit me When I walk through that door tonight That I'm gonna miss her Oh, lookie there, I've got a flite Now there's a chance that if I hurry I could beg her to stay But that plane's idlin' And the weather's perfect No tellin' how many points I may turn today Well I'm gonna miss her When I get home But right now I'm on this drop zone And I'm packin' my rig I'm sure it'll hit me When I walk through that door tonight That I'm gonna miss her Oh, lookie there, I've got a flite Yeah, I'm gonna miss her Oh, lookie there, I've got a flite

I made two dives in Cozumel (long dives 90 minutes) then skydived 22 hours later at Playa. 24 hours is a SAFE precaution. Obviously you can go less. Nothing magical happens after 23 hrs and 59 minutes. BUt remember ... you break the RULES at YOUR OWN risk.

240+ in less than two years

I imagine rolling out of bed. To roll roll right - I throw my arm across my chest and turn (like getting out of bed)

So then...What's your jump average per year???
StevePhelps replied to Vertifly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I made 120 jumps since Jan. Not bad for a working stiff at a small DZ who seldom gets weekends off to go to bigger boogies. BUT, I get to jump any day of the week a slot may be open (students, tandems, etc) -
How do you use your Closing Pin Necklace?
StevePhelps replied to Casch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
24/7 -- Just started though as I hate wearing jewelry. I'm more interested in what type do others wear and why? I ordered a cammo one with black washers and cork beads. They sent me a flame one instead. I wear it because I also have a Harley that is dressed up in flames. -
I am (in a way) My son graduated Airborne (like I did in 1977) and I chose to go there instead. Good choice. It was fun to go back and he appreciated me pinning his wings on. I'm more depressed I discovered I have a mass behind my left eye and causing severe vision problems. I made a few jumps with the "one good eye" and then decided to wait and see what the MRI and Dr's say. I just want to jump gain! Its been three weeks and that has been my longest layoff in two years.

Are military static line considered jumps?
StevePhelps replied to StevePhelps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thanks for the input -- you helped me clarify the issue. I don't need the 44 militray jumps I had, but I was wondering if I should include them in my number. Blue ones! -

Help me out here. What part of military jumps would not be not in requirements to the USPA? -
Are military static line considered jumps?
StevePhelps replied to StevePhelps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I see your OPINION, (no SIM to back it up) but if I read the SIM right, they DO count in the number of total jumps. Yes, I know they don't count toward freefall time, duh. But as I read the other's posts and I as I understand the SIM, they DO count in a skydiver's TOTAL jumps. -
Are military static line considered jumps?
StevePhelps replied to StevePhelps's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The regs from the SIM say a skydive is: SKYDIVE: 1. n. The descent of a person to the surface from an aircraft in flight when he or she uses or intends to use a parachute during all or part of that descent. 2. v. To jump form an aircraft with a parachute. So do our military static line jumps count towards our total jumps. If not, why? (show me in the USPA's SIM)
