[/QUOTE] Without knowing how good or bad your situation is, if the instructor is competent at teaching you and you are learning, just his personality is grating on you, I say stick with him. Try to push/motivate him to teach how you want to, but I think switching instructors would be worse than staying with one that has a slightly annoying attitude. Your instructor is obviously VITAL to your training, and switching instructors can hinder their ability to know what your patterns and normal problems in freefall is, returning less information to you.     brake setting

    I'm by no means an expert at this, but I think he was talking about personally finding your own DBS. Don't BASE canopy manufacturers suggest DBS, but the settings are usually not followed exactly? From what I gathered, manufacturers are not going to set down in stone how you set the brakes on your canopy, they leave that up to the jumper, due to every jumper being a different weight, size, etc, therefore one setting would be worthless *and potentially dangerous* to the buyer. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

    brake setting

    I would be curious in hearing the answer to this question, as well. Or not in an attempt to hijack the thread, just info on DBS's in general. I imagine the setting is on a curve, cause if you get someone on both extremes (a light and a heavy guy) it's hard to follow calculate things like wingloading, deepness of brake setting, etc etc, because more often the canopy's dimensions and characteristics are attributed to how its flying. That might not be clear, but that's my gut feeling, there's not a linear chart you can plot brake settings on. I think it also depends on what you're jumping, correct?     Toggle out

    maybe a good thing to do would be make a few skydives with your BASE canopy and pull high, and full around with one toggle out, one toggle stowed, two tossed, one hand on risers, etc etc. I think you could really learn a lot, and the margin for error is so much less. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Of course, if its abnormally high winds, cut away, and chase your canopy after your stable. This is things you do once you're ON THE GROUND, not during the landing process.   13. also, what beginners sometimes do not realize is by downsizing, you're not only losing square footage over your head, but youre shortening the lines on the canopy, making it more aggressive in two areas. By jumping from a 1:1 to a 1.3:1 you're either implying you gained some weight, or that you bought a more aggresive canopy. In my opinion the safest jump would be "I gained some weight, now my wingloading is higher", because with that the lines still stay the same, youre somewhat used to the canopy, etc. But if you stayed the same weight and bought a NEW canopy, with a NEW lineset, well, your wingloading went up, like before, AND you have a more aggresive angle on the lines, which could lead to a disaster.   16. I'm confused. Nowhere in my AFF training I've been told anything about collapsing my slider. I've been told to check for the three S's, square, stable, and steerable. And of course watch out for traffic. When my canopy inflates I pump both toggles into sort of a weak flare and then do a slight right slight left turn to check steerability. How do you collapse your slider? What does collapsing your slider achieve? I thought by either getting on the rear risers or using the toggles that would effectively "collapse" your slider.   18. great post! I know exactly what you are talking about. This may be a great chance to remind people with high jump numbers that students are oftentimes very self conscious of their skills in the air and should be treated with a little more care than seasoned jumpers.   20. thanks for the advice, guys. I am going to go through this season continue jumping, honestly I don't see this as a big enough problem to ruin my summer of jumping. But come winter, if I havn't successfully rehabilitated it with some weight workouts, and compression wraps, then I will start investigating surgery.   21. can somebody confirm this statement? I fly a 260 student rental rig during my AFF jumps and always on the way down pull "aggresive" toggle turns, holding them for a couple 360s sometimes. Am I in danger of firing my student cypres off? I will ask my instructor, but if I could get a confirmation here that'd be great too.
  22. don't quote me on this, but I think you'd have to be flying a pretty small canopy to get to AAD firing speeds. I think the average AFF student canopy (200-290) wouldn't have this problem. If he truly does care about you then he will respond to your requests in a mature and loving way. One more question, do you tell him he rocks, or he kicks ass, etc? For whatever reason you might be a person that has no qualms about the public knowing your involvement regarding BASE, or you might not. I was thinking about this issue this morning as I was running, and I came up with a lot of reasons you wouldn't want to "name names". Most of them don't have anything to do with BASE jumping, or getting "caught". Like I said, it's a respect issue, leave the individual's name to that individual.
