Does this mean jumping off something with your parachute not packed and just held in your hands? Do people do this kind of thing for low objects, like off a 80 foot drop or something? And then also what is the skill level of this type of thing if I have the terminology correct. Thanks! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

offshoot question. I've been recomended to hone my canopy control skills and familiarize myself with BASE canopies to get a BASE canopy and use in a skydiving environment. If they havnt been certified can I still use it as a main at the local DZ? I've moved this into a separate thread, because it seems important to me that beginners are aware of this. ~Tom Aiello --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I don't know how valid this theory is in reality today. What with the internet and such bringing people together that have like minded attitudes. I can think of things as risky as BASE jumping that have hundreds of thousands more participants. I can also think of things less risky that youre not likely to find very many people doing. I dont know the theory name though, but I think it would apply to an isolated community with no external influences. Place a thousand people near a mountain, only a handful of them are going to want to climb that mountain as it would be a risky adventure. This definitely isn't worth two cents --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

does anyone know where to find the pack volume of this reserve? Or know what it is equivalent to in square footage for a square reserve? Thanks --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

but generally a few hundred more exspensive? Do astras go off accidentally more than cypres's generally? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

how come many people dont use astra's anymore? Are they no good? Harder to maintain? Whats the deal with them? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

hey, you know no one has ever explained it that simply. Something you said made something "click" up there... *bangs head repeatedly for lesson to sink in* --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Thanks, Tom. All good stuff, exactly what I was looking for, I appreciate it. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

What is the legal severity of being "caught" BASE jumping. The charge is tresspassing? Anything else? Have you known people who have had minor misd charges in their past get caught BASE jumping? Has this weighted the sentence dramatically more? What generally happens in cases where people are caught? Any pointers to websites that list this information would help. I wouldn't say I am afraid of being caught, but this is certainly one issue that I am working through regarding BASE jumping, as I have had a few problems with the police in my past. Thanks for any light you can shed on this. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Nice tip! I never thought about that! That would be a great way to judge direction and speed with no stable relative landmark. Right now I'm using the ground when I'm low, which isn't an option up high. So if I see somebody with spit on their helmet I just turn and look the other way...right? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

thanks for the quick replies. Definitely like that students have to pull at 5k, this gives me a few minutes to play around with rear and front risers, not to mention perfect flat turns. Thanks for the input. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

so flying in on quarter or half brakes then letting up to no toggle pressure to prepare for the final flare is not that uncommon? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

delta position gives you less foward motion than tracking but more stability? Do you have to be going terminal to "use" a track effectively? Whats the main differences between the two? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

If it looks like youre going to overshoot your landing target and possibly crash into the highway, trees, or some other hazard, but you have enough room to bleed off some altitude, what is the best way for a beginner to do this? With gentle S turns, or with a few high up flares to stop foward motion? Which is the most effective? Thanks. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

felony distribution dropped to misd possession! Yeah they rock! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

whats the slowest descent rate you guys get with your wingsuits? I'm interested in wing suit flying, but of course am getting bunches of general skydiving experience first. Out of curiousity whats the slowest you go? Does weight have a lot to do with it? I'm small at 5'7" 125 pounds. Does weight to height ratio have anything to do with the descent rate or only with the glide ratio? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

are AAD's ruined in water landings? Or is there only a chance they will be ruined? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Is there a web page that lists these hand signals, i.e. legs out, legs in, COA, good arch, bad arch, etc, cause I can't find one. I feel like a dumbass for not being able to remember the signals perfectly when my instructor quizzes me before jumps. Thanks for any help you provide

is it always a good idea to cutaway from your parachute once you've touched water? Do people actually do this if youre close to shore with no real danger of drowning? I imagine cutting away would be more suited if you landed in a river or real far off the shore. Am I right? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

thanks for the good points, I'm really thinking about after I get a dozen or so more jumps (after student status). I might as well use my DZ's gear while I'm a student if its for free. But after that I probably will be just some dude in jeans and a shirt... --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

nice, what size is the canopy? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

hello, I really want to get BOOTIES for extra tracking speed, etc. However, I don't have the $ for an exspensive suit, nor do I really want to drop dough on a suit I might not use for long (I don't exactly know WHAT I want to do yet :). So my question would having a friend who is excellent at sewing make me a pair of nylon pants with sewn in booties and just wear a t shirt (its hot where I live in the summer, 95-100) be alright? I think I would like the ease of use combined with the functionality of still having heavy duty pants (in case I fall) with booties to help with tracking as I said...What do you think? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I am pounding into my head these emergency procedures my instructor is feeding me, but this question just popped into my head and rather wait and ask my instructor and likely forget, I'll ask here. How long do you usually wait when you pull to check if something is wrong? Do you look over your shoulder and try to see if PC is trailing, still in bag, etc? Or is it kind of a blind thing, i.e. if youre not getting that "under the canopy" feel and youre still at terminal you obviously know nothing is out and then go to emergency procedure? Are there any types of mals that delay say 2-3 seconds then deploy perfectly? This is what I'm afraid of, having a mal like this and just impulsively cutting away and pulling reserve. Also with line twists, I'm afraid my first BIG line twist that I could probably save I will freak out on adrenaline and cut and pull reserve. Is there any good way to train yourself on how to recognize mals? (I know what to do obviously, I'm just unsure on my skills at recognizing a deadly mal vs a salvagable canopy i.e. moderate line twists, pc hesitation, etc). --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
