do you think because of its inherent sportiness the dagger is not a good choice for someone's first BASE canopy? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Not trying to nitpick, but what happened to the Wanted/For Sale/Trade headers on the ads? I just want to be sure you've thought of all this, you probably already have! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I'm still going through AFF, but Im the opposite way from you, the cessnas are much less intimidating to use. My first jump was from a king air, and that was pretty scary/fast. After that I jumped a few times from a cessna, and it was so mild in comparison, just hang on and kind of let go, as compared with the king air where you're swept out of the freaking door! Its all good. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Are these new classifieds going to be moderated? The one problem I see with the new system, is the misadvertising people do on the headings of their posts. With the old system it was not a problem when people slightly mislabeled or EMBELLISHED their titles of their posts, you could quickly glance down and see what it was they were actually selling. Now, you will have to click on their posted ad, see what theyre selling, see that they were bullshitting maybe on how good it was, then backclick. One, not everyone has very fast connections. Two, this is not user friendly. Stricter rules for posting ads, or a moderator that will go in and adjust ads as he sees just would fit the new system. Just my lowly opinion. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

the newer version of ad-aware doesn't permanently delete the files you find are "corrupted", I use quotes because Ad-Aware is not always accurate or correct in deeming something bad for your computer. It makes mistakes. It might of deleted some of your sound files. Check your quarantine list and click on the box that will undo the remove. Then reboot, that should have the files back in place, be careful though, the actual bad files that you took off will now be back on, you might want to run adaware again and be more picky about which files you delete. Good luck! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I have a question about line overs in BASE. With skydiving you are taught to pump or flare your toggles attempting to clear the line, or drag it off the top of the canopy. If this doesn't work then some suggest cutting the line depending on how high you are, and what line it is. Others suggest just cutting away and pulling your reserve. Of course, most BASE jumpers don't have two parachutes, so cutting away isnt an option. What do you do in line overs? I know this is pretty vague, but do you take the time to flare the toggles, hoping the line will "fall off", or do you go straight for your hook knife? Does it depend on how high you are AGL? Or do you have one planned procedure for line overs? Thanks! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Thanks Tom, that was very well put. I'm glad there are people as level headed as you involved in this sport. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

you better get a rigger to check it for signs of wear, imo. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

can someone identify the difference in the cobalt from other HP canopies that makes opening in a track more desireable? I was under the impression that ALL canopies should be opened in a hard arch to avoid malfunctions. I'm interested in the cobalt, as thats the elliptical canopy I wish to be flying someday when I get enough experience --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I have a quick question. How is simply shooting video of a site burning it? If youre already jumping the site in the daytime, for whatever reason, then why not slap on a camera or two? Is it the process, the set up, etc that makes it more likely to get caught when shooting video? Or is it afterwards, when you stupidly start distributing it online? I would think care to see who actually gets to see the video would be the best etiquette, but maybe I'm missing something? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
I think the biggest issue is the inner struggle
Well put. I've done a lot of things in my life that could be termed dangerous, stupid, reckless, but its always been AFTERWARDS that I realized I could of been seriously injured. BASE is a whole new territory for me in that it is a conscious desicion to do something that very well might kill you. I know, I know, getting in a car, getting in a plane, going out in a lightning storm, etc etc all are doing things that might kill you, but for some reason the fact that BASE is recreational, makes it a little more gut wrenching. I've never really had to deal with the thought that what I CHOOSE to do might end me up dead, so its a little struggle. And I havn't even started BASE jumping yet!!! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

schweet! That helmet is so nice you'll now be worrying about bumping and scratching the helmet and not your head while exiting the plane! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
Basically, I decided early on that I need to know a ton about the sport in order to educate my family on it and why I do it. I chose to do that versus letting on in the beginning, mainly because I was evolving as a jumper (still am) and wanted to be sure 1 BASE is for me, and 2 I can tell you why that is.
Blair, I think you hit the nail on the head with that comment. That's what I am doing at this point, I am past the stage that I know I want to BASE jump (that came very easily) I am now working on getting enough knowledge to not only feel safe once I actually start BASE jumping, but also have the ability to impress others involved in the sport and others involved in my life that I am going about it "professionally" and with a sense of maturity, not recklessly. All good things are worth working towards slowly and methodically. I love that BASE jumping is a natural community of people who (for the most part) recognize safety as paramount. Now only if I could get that idea across to signifigant people in my life. Jumping out of a plane with 2 parachutes is hard enough to explain to parents --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Mac, you were determined. How did you deal with those emotional relationships in your life being so severely cut off? Did the people in your life "get used to it". I try to put myself outside of myself (I know hard!) and if one of my brothers said they were going to start BASE jumping, I would be very nervous for them, and possibly try to dissuade them. I havn't really talked to my family about it, but I know I will have to, we're very close. Thanks for the feedback mac, even though it was kinda a bummer --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

This thread is interesting, specifically the theorizing about wind. I have fowarded this to a friend that is a physics student, majoring specifically in liquid dynamics (air is considered a liquid in this case even though it is a gas!). Once he gets a chance to reply to it I'll post what he had to say. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

This was spurred on by this comment in another thread:
I've heard other jumpers say if they got married, they'd quit jumping.
IMO, this isn't clear and level headed thinking. I've been trying to deal with these sorts of issues, working through all the emotional baggage that comes with deciding to do something as high risk as BASE jumping. I think just because you're married to someone doesn't make the emotional relationship any stronger than a serious romantic relationship with another. Besides, everyone (most) has parents, brothers, sisters, friends, people that care about them, that "rank" just as high emotionally as a wife/husband. How do these people deal with the other people in their life? I'd really like to get some feedback from people that dealt/are dealing with this type of thing. Accepting the risk yourself is difficult, but asking those that love you to accept that you very well might die on that next jump seems like a very hard thing to do. I hope to get some advice as I don't see anyway around this problem other than bearing the emotional stress that comes with presenting seemingly reckless behavior to loved ones. I think anyone short of the coldest individual has dealt with this, hopefully you'll be able to help me. Thanks a lot, and as always I look foward to your guys opinions. Oh, and as a sidenote, I think this problem is only troubling me because I know I am truly serious about becoming a BASE jumper, its just a matter of time while I gain the experience, knowledge, and ability to begin safely. Maybe when I actually start BASE jumping this issue will become a non-issue, or maybe the problem will only intensify, that's why I am asking now. Peace, Andy --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
Should we ask every BASE jumper we know... "Are you an officer of the law? Are you associated in any way with Law Enforcement?"
As a sidenote, an officer of the law enforcement can do anything to gain your confidence, i.e. use illegal drugs, distribute illegal drugs, buy illegal drugs, jump from illegal spots, smile and politely say that he is not an officer, and THEN ARREST YOU. Sorry, I just hate when people say that all you have to do is ask someone if they are a cop or not to narc out a narc. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
Please be advised that some people listen to what you say very intently. Don't stop giving the beta.
I second that. Tom, great job trying to talk to these guys, maybe get a phone number or an email and try to further prompt discussion. Maybe they were hard to talk to right after their jump because they were so pumped, etc, maybe later they would be more approachable. It is your site too, imo, more so yours since you are jumping it correctly. But, regardless, you rock for helping people understand how to BASE jump correctly and safely (as possible). --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

righto, I guess thatd be somewhere in the grey area along with balloon jumps, unhooking from a tandem, etc etc... --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
