There isnt any emergency procedures for you to take, other than fasten your seatbelt, which probably wont do much good when the plane crashes.
so true about airlines, thats why theyre so scary! Alternatively, imo, that's why skydiving is such a confidence builder, it places your life in your own hands and forces you to save yourself (pull). --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

ok, thanks guys, I knew I would get the "NEVER RELY ON IT" answer the way I worded my question. Common sense taught me that long before I even went to my FJC. Thanks for giving me good information, peace out --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

^^^ I dont think you'd have a problem finding femur breaks or the like. From what I gather, most people that have video of their accidents and are healed and jumping again, are pretty proud of them and like showing them off. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

quick question about RSLs. Do people rely on RSLs to pull their reserve for them? I know you should never rely on anything besides yourself, but I mean, is there time between a cutaway on a RSL to pull your reserve yourself? Or will your RSL beat you to it? Is it suggested to cutaway and try for the reserve yourself even if you dont think you'll be able to get it in time? I've been taught, look right, grab right, look left, grab left, peel right, pull right, peel left, pull left. Is my RSL faster than me? I have heard mentioned once, allowing your RSL to do your work is bad on your reserve lines, or something to that effect? Can someone clarify that? Thanks! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

just to clairify I am asking this as I have come to know these are "performance enhancing" type things skydivers do to their canopies to get that extra little umph. It seems these kind of things would be skipped in BASE where the integrity/durability of the canopy comes first. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

all BASE PCs are non-collapse-able? Also, sliders arn't build to be "stowed", correct? Thanks. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

on a related note, what is the altitude that people switch from their reserves to their mains? I assume anything in the 1k neighborhood is going to warrent a bail on reserve type situation, but where do you switch from the safety of the reserve, to the practicality of the main (i.e. you can repack a main in 15 minutes, whereas a reserve is a little more complicated). Not trying to hijack the thread (its very interesting), just looking for a knowledgeable answer. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I am not a BASE jumper, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Why not try to find some local BASE jumpers and ask if you can watch one of their jumps? Afterall, Kjerag is exspensive to get to, if you don't live in Norway, and if you did start BASE jumping, you'd be jumping in your area probably most of the time anyway. Right now I think flying to Norway would be a little pre-emptive. Why would you have to be filming, anyways? Film with your eyes, if all you want to get is a feel for the sport. Also, Kjerag is a very unusual and advanced BASE jump. The majority of your BASE jumps will be nothing like the jumps you could do from Norway. Just my humble opinion, I am like you as well, in the learning process *edit- please someone correct me if I said anything that could steer this guy wrong. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

Theyre instructing because they found a way to make money doing something they love. More exposure and the more theyre able to do the thing they love, instruct students/experienced folks. Thats the best problem for a business, growing so fast its hard to keep up with --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
BTW is also the reason some experienced jumpers _don't_ like them.
Right! I knew there was a reason people with higher jump numbers tended to use pillow reserve handles, I just couldnt think of it, thanks --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
>Size does make a difference.
Ok, was looking for an oppurtunity to ask this question. Does wingloading effect opening strength? I was trying to figure it out in my head as I dozed off last night, and I came up with good reasons that a big canopy would open hard on a light person, and alternately why a small canopy would open hard. Given the same characteristics, model, and packjob (I know impossible, just hypothetically) which would open harder? A .75 WL, or a 1.25 WL? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

this is coming from another student going through AFF at the moment, so take it with a grain of salt. My first few skydives were sort of tense, I wouldn't say I was terrified, but I definitely had a bit of healthy fear. I learned that I was much more relaxed when I asked EVERYTHING I could possibly think of to my instructors. I asked what this does, what this is for, etc etc. I asked about emergency procedures, clarified things in my mind, and generally just talked about skydiving. Instead of keeping quiet, like I know I am prone to do, I forced myself to voice my questions. This helped a lot, and I felt after I had done this much more in control, and that really is what fear is about, feeling out of control of your own life. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
Well, that's why at the Transition Course (tandem isp) I teach "Look, grab, look, grab, peel, pull, peel, pull."
This is how I am being taught, to remember that it is attached to velcro, and the easiest way to get it off is to peel. However, my question to more experienced folks, do you think the metal D rings are more "user friendly" i.e. the reason you see most student rigs with them? Just curious, although I guess when I get ready to buy custom manufactured gear I won't have to worry about being a beginning skydiver (read will be in a few years after college ). --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

I thought people generally destroyed video of fatalities? Is it common practice to air these videos? That seems wrong to me. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...

A unconscious desire for human flight, or just a fun sport?
andy2 replied to Skylark's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
hey skylark, I was the exact same way as you when I started out AFF. At first all I wanted was to get through AFF and get my A license and just do solos, me, the sky, and nothing else. You probably have more jumps than me, but already my flavor has changed, all it took was this moment when practicing foward motion with my instructor on jump number 7, and bang, I realized that falling at terminal relative to someone else is the best. All it takes is one little "click" to change your thoughts about skydiving, so I suggest you stay open, and try EVERYTHING. You can always get that wingsuit on jump 200 or so, til then HAVE FUN! Just my inexperienced opinion! --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm... -
I think Faber pretty much said it. Its an understanding thing. People are afraid and like to push away what they don't understand. So, some dude is jumping off a tower? That's CRAZY! He has got to have a death wish! Too bad if they talked to that guy they might find a logical, thinking, rational human being that decided beforehand what the risks and danger involved was and has accepted it. But I guess as Faber said, if they arn't willing to understand, then they are not "one of those I talk to". --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
