Interestingly two men who were serving with him when it seems he deserted, basically say they are glad he is home but do not believe he is a hero and want him to stand trail. It falls the same way. If it turns out that his health wasn't bad, REAL BAD it will play poorly...especially with Congress. Let me present it this way. Lets say the story that comes out quickly is: This guy deserted, 6 men were killed searching for him, and we traded 5 top bad guys KNOWING all this. I know this subject will break down to party lines here. But I just can't see team Obama making such a big mistake. 1. It would be well known that he was a deserter. 2. It would be well know if men had been killed in the search for him. 3. It would be well known that this would cause a shit storm in congress, about Obama not giving the 30 day notice. I'm going with #3. The left narrative "We saved this man, if we had let him die the right would scream" The right narrative "They gave away to much, broke the law" No matter what it is an argument that has emtional strings to it and it is at least defensible from the lefts view. The ultra left will say that is doesn't matter if he deserted or if American troops were killed looking for him, he was still an American and we should do everything to get him back. I wasn't flaring with a toggle and riser. My leasson and point was (for me) the proper action should have been to cut it away when I could not clear the tension knot. Also, for me, it isn't that you can't land with a tension knot, that you can't land with a toggle and rear riser....or the fact that I can't spell. It's that I let my comfort and complacency lured me into a situation that could have very easily cause me great bodily damage or death. Don't want to start a shit storm here but..... The debate about lowering your decision height would be dumb and generally I don't think anyone is saying that. I think there is a legitmate question as to IF YOU FUCKED up and you got yourself way in the basement with a main malfuction how low would you cut away with and without a skyhook. Picture: Your at 700 feet (I'm using my number you pick your on low number) with a spinning main. Do you a) fire your reserve getting as much shit above you? b) Attempt a canopy transfer c) Cut away with a skyhook? I was pulling on the right raiser, I should have tried the right toggle, but went to the right raiser.... "Just to clarify you were going to flare with rear risers but your hand had slipped all the way down without you realising." Yep, sounds dumb, was dumb. I believe that my grip on the raiser wasn't that high to begain with and as I flew it was a very small amount I came down. In the end the real problem was that I didn't feel I could regrip the raiser as low as I was to the ground. Literally very close when I ran out of leverage. Point was I didn't realize I had a problem till it was to late. Dumb I know it, but things seemed ok until the LAST moment. "I have seen people land with an asymmetric flare when one toggle was jammed" Yep, I've done it before As to prevention: 1. The rig was packed at the 222 ways, I hadn't been getting good opening for the entire event. I should state now that I haven't packed in probably 7 years and am in no way blaming the packer - EXCEPT - on the ground under inspection the brake lines were way way twisted up THAT WAS MY FAULT but at my local dz my packers take care of that. That easily could have cause the line to wrap up. 2. I focused on unwrapping the toggle from the raiser, I thought that once that was done it would be free. Problem was there was another knot above the slider. As dumb as this might seem I was wearing a very old helmet with the lens scatched badly, plus I don't see well up close. This cost me some time and perhaps I would have seen the other knots?? Thats about all I can say. FWIW, I spoke w Bill a few weeks ago about his thoughts on lower cut always due to having a skyhook. The basics of the discussion was that he wouldn't lower his cut away decision height a foot lower if he had a skyhook.
