  1. Nothing. It doesn't take a Scott or a Luigi - or even a swooper for that matter - to teach basic canopy control. It's entirely possible that an instructor with only 1000 jumps could be very good at teaching and coaching basic canopy control. It's not hard to video landings, nor it is difficult to figure out if someone is flaring too early, too late, reaching and/or not finishing their flare. There are lots of instructors out there who could teach the course that is outlined in the SIM. It's a matter of them taking the time to do it...
  2. Eyeball and Cut Metal Fabrication "Metal Fabrication" sounds much sexier and implies much more skill than does "Welding."
  3. Quote I predict that you'll have done two hop and pops before you get your A license.
  4. What if I'm jumping one of those planes that doesn't have lights? Then what do I do?
  5. Did that the past two years and got some good deals. But this year there isn't anything we want or need bad enough to get up that early. And we spent a good hour with the stack of ads yesterday trying to find a good reason to be out there this morning.
  6. If laminate has lasted the 15 years they've lived there, it's probably durable and long lasting enough. And cheaper too. If they have no plans to sell the house, why does it matter if what they use isn't what "most buyers want"? You can always rip out the laminate and put in granite when they die so you can get top dollar out of their house...
  7. We're working on the tortilla chips and bean dip. Pretty soon we'll be putting the chicken enchiladas into the oven. Mmmmm.... fuck traditional...
  8. NorCal. An abundance of turbine aircraft, a lot of jumpable days each year, a wind tunnel, Tahoe skiing/snowboarding, hiking, fishing, hunting, lakes, San Francisco... Cost of living is a bit high in The City but it gets better (cheaper) the further inland you go. You can buy a nice house in the Sacramento area for around $200k right now.
  9. How would you react to having your income cut by 20+ percent?
  10. 11:2:0 An "11 way" on 11/11 for Jeff's 1111th on Tuesday, and Amanda's third Cat C on Saturday. I love AFF!
  11. Best: The taco truck in the parking lot next to the Ace Hardware. Worst: Any franchise restaurant.
  12. Lang Ale poured from a growler into a plastic bottle is anything but ewwww. Rum and coke works well too.
  13. Assuming you don't mean at a casino.... Yes. Big time.
  14. Plastic bottles work fine under canopy. Make a lanyard out of a pullup cord or two, put desired alchohol... err I mean liquid in the bottle, tie the bottle to the pullup cord(s), hang the whole thing around the neck, tuck the bottle inside the jumpsuit/sweatshirt, enter and then exit aircraft, open parachute, open and enjoy beverage. Oh, and don't forget to flare.
  15. Reason #1 - While I am of course an awesome instructor, it's possible that Bob may have a way of saying something that is different than the way I say it. His way of saying the same thing that I said might be the way that will stick in student A's head, even though the way I said it seemed to stick in student B's head just fine. Reason #2 - My s/o has done more jumps as an AFFI than I've done jumps. He has told me about more than one student who jumped with one instructor throughout most of their progression, doing well, only to be the classic flailer on one or more jumps with different instructors. Do we want to train people who are only comfortable/can only perform up to standard when a specific person is jumping with them? Or do we want to train people who are comfortable with and capable of jumping with everybody? Reason #3 - There are only so many students. If Bob takes as many as he can all the way through their progression, how are the rest of the instructors supposed to stay current? Another equally important component of this is when is Bob going to get to do some fun jumping? If the dz requires training to be done according to the ISP, there IS a measurable product. Between the student's logbook and their A card, you can put your finger on "I" responsibility and accountability. Then the first "I" isn't doing his/her job. That's not a reason for every other "I" on the dz to get hosed.
  16. That's just it, I have no homeowners/renters insurance. If it's worth anything at all, it's moving to my parent's house where I can be sure it's covered. I'm not saying nuthin' 'bout any other guns I may or may not have.
  17. "I am a perfect physical and mental specimen, therefore anybody who wants to be touched by my perfection must also be physically and mentally perfect. If they are in any way different than I am, they are obviously defective and will be allowed in my perfect presence only for a short period of time so that I can later insult them whilst amongst my equally perfect acquaintances."
  18. They were too young to have pubic hair then.
  19. True, but if it's worth more than a hundred bucks or so, I plan to make certain that it is insured. "Whatever someone is willing to pay" probably won't fly with an insurance company if it were ever stolen or destroyed.
  20. Many years ago, my grandmother gave me her S&W Model 51 22/32 kit gun. It was given new to her by her brother at some point in the 1960's. It's had maybe three boxes of ammo go through it in it's lifetime; I'd call it 90%+ on the original blue finish. The grips show no wear. After a bit of cursory research online, I've discovered that this gun could be worth way more than I thought it was; apparently the Model 51 is somewhat rare. It won't be for sale but I am very curious as to how much it is actually worth in today's market. I'd also like to keep it in the condition it is currently in (if it's worth some money, I won't be dry firing it ever again!). So my questions for you - who/where is a good person to ask/place to go to get a relatively accurate valuation? And other than keeping it wrapped in a cloth in it's original box and not shooting it, what else should I be doing to keep it purty?
  21. I'm an hour or so drive east of The City.
