What makes risks acceptable versus unacceptable?
skybytch replied to lawrocket's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nice. I wrote that. Now who do I contact to get credit for it? -
Interesting repair job here...

Somehow I don't think Davis is going to be very busy that weekend. Keith and I would like to be a part of that.

Those colors must be used! That will look so awesome on my pink suit.

Thursday morning love to you, Bob. You're amazing.

This is directed at people who've been in the sport long enough to have more than one person on their Dead Friends List. I've got a few names on mine. This never entered my mind when all of the previous names were added, but the latest addition has me wondering... When does the list get too long? How many is one too many? And what do you about it when one too many happens? At what point does the risk of losing another friend outweigh the rewards of knowing, jumping with, and caring about someone new?
-
At some point I'll stop feeling like I've been booted in the stomach. Dammit. It's hard to type when you can't see the screen through the tears. And mixed with the tears comes laughter as I remember. So many memories... love under the Velocity, golfcart driveby flashing runs, hours chatting in the Pub, that weekend in Perris two years ago... We had dinner with Shannon and Bob a month or so ago. Sharing good food and good conversation with good friends - that was the last time I saw her. The memory of that night will be with me forever. Bob... God, I can't find the right words, if there even are any right words. Shannon was blessed to have you in her life. Shannon... thank you. For the hugs (you gave the best hugs!) the laughter, the skydives. the friendship, the matchmaking, for being the incredible person you were. I miss you so much. The attached pictures were taken by JP (Deuce) at Perris on Memorial Day weekend, 2004.

Yeah it does. God, I'm going to miss her.

Nooooooooo........
-
What makes you say that?

Stop calling it "the dining room." Start calling it "the gear room." Problem solved. Lemme know if there's anything else I can help with.

Safety Day is a day in early spring when many dropzones in the US offer seminars on various safety related issues. IIRC the idea was to try to prevent injuries and deaths when people are getting current again after taking the winter off. Unfortunately not every dz does it, and it's generally not those who could really benefit from the information that show up...

1) Take a canopy control course as soon as possible. 2) Don't buy a new (or used) canopy until you've had a chance to demo a few. Stick with more conservative types - Safire1 or 2, Sabre2, Pilot... and even though you think you want a 9 cell this time, I'd suggest demoing a Spectre as well. 3) Keep your wingloading light (1.0-ish) until you know you've got your landing issues worked out.
-
Isn't that what Safety Day is about?

You must fuckassssss!!!!

Returning to sport and landing issues - advice?
skybytch replied to terminalrush40's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Take a canopy control course as soon as possible. You'll be amazed at how much you didn't know and how much better you'll be at accuracy and landing once you learn it. I'd also suggest replacing your PD150 with something zp, maybe not right away but in the near future. The flare is much better and the openings are generally softer. Demo a few different ones before you buy - I'd recommend checking out the Spectre, Sabre2, Pilot and Safire. -
Congrats Phil! But don't think that because you didn't tell anyone you're exempt from pie.

That's a really good plan. If the harness fit problem is enough to make you scared to jump, it's okay to wait for the custom one to arrive if the used one doesn't fit. Once you have a harness that fits I doubt you'll be this scared. Regarding turbulence - You're going to still feel it under a 150. It scares me too. Skydiving is supposed to be fun and I'm not having fun when I'm bouncing around in turbulence. I solve that problem by not jumping when it's bumpy up there.

Jumping with a slightly injured leg?
skybytch replied to masterblaster72's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you can run without pain, I'd say go jump. If you can't, I'd say don't jump. -
And blood sacrifices to offer. Seriously though - I've heard of a couple of non-CRW related situations where a hook knife could have been useful.
-
Pockets are good things to have. Get at least one. You'll be glad you did. How do you know you won't need a hook knife soon?
-
You forgot this one.

That'd be the best option. You said the main is a PD170. The PD170 is an all F111 canopy. At 210 pounds exit weight you're loading it at over 1.2. Besides the fact that it is not a good idea to load all F111 mains over 1.0, your wingloading on a 170 is pretty aggressive for someone with 50 jumps. You'd be better off buying an all zp 190 with a comparable sized reserve. Of course, that's not going to get you a smaller container... but in a worst case scenario it might save you some doctor bills.
