Helmet - Depends on how much money you want to throw at it and how fashion concious you are. Protecs are inexpensive and provide good head protection; downside is they aren't stylish. Moving up the price scale, "freefly" helmets (open face like the Mindwarp, Guner, Aviator, etc) provide some head protection (surprisingly, not as much as a Protec does) and are stylish; downside is they cost a lot more. An open face helmet can be used for any kind of skydiving. Full face helmets (Z1, Oxygn, Factory Diver, etc) are more expensive yet. They're great for cold weather or if you're doing jumps where the risk of getting kicked in the face is higher. Downsides are lenses that fog and reduced peripheral vision. Personally, I think the best bang for the buck is the Protec. Rig - read this. Jumpsuit - read this. Gloves - Batting gloves work fine most of the time.

It's 10:15 pm, second night of the American Boogie and it's still damn near 90 degrees outside, so of course I've got Jimmy Buffett playing.

It's probably a Robnik Sapphire. Plastic case, face bigger than an Alti 3?

And billvon is an evil genius. I wouldn't fuck around with those guys.

Yup. Forgot to add the hangar to the no-dog zones list. Basically the only place dogs can be is in the parking areas.

You won't find the number and variety of aircraft that are available at WFFC at many other places - biplane, glider, balloons, CASA's, Otters, Skyvans, King Air... oh, and did they mention the jet? I doubt you'll wait more than 15 minutes to get on an airplane. Even if "only" 1000 jumpers show up for WFFC (and with the jet being a very good possibility I'd expect more than 1000 jumpers will be there), you won't find 1000+ jumpers at any other boogie that I know of. If demo gear is very important to you and the manufacturers you are interested in aren't going to be there, contact them and arrange to have demos sent to you at the boogie. Depending on how long you'll be in the states, imho the biggest bang for your buck would be to do both WFFC and Summerfest.

FYI - dogs are not allowed on any of the grass (including the tent camping areas - so if you're camping in a tent, don't bring your dogs!), by the bonfire or in the tiki bar. No exceptions - not even if they are the worlds best dogs (like mine ).

Another way to sell it without having to worry about being scammed or having to deal with questions from potential buyers would be to put it on consignment with a gear store (if there isn't a gear store in your area I'd suggest one of the larger online/phone dealers like Square One). The downside to consigning it is you won't get as much money out of the sale, but if you just don't want the hassle of selling it yourself it may be worth it.

never let your friend learn on your new bike!!!!!
skybytch replied to LilZilla's topic in The Bonfire
Rereading my post, I don't see that I said anything about stupid manuevers or busy areas. Say you're on a residential street, he's driving the posted speed limit and someone pulls out of their driveway directly in front of him, forcing him to swerve. On a smaller bike he could likely swerve and regain balance. Less likely on a bigger bike, so he loses control and takes you out... -

What if you're riding your bicycle down the street (or picking up your main in the landing area) and he comes along and, due to inexperience and overconfidence, loses control of his bike (parachute) and takes you out? Are you still okay with his choice of "comfort zone and speed of progression"? -
I want to be in Perris to remember Barb on Saturday. I want to be in Palo Alto to remember Shannon on Saturday.

I'm worried about my boyfriend. He's watching a rerun of a soccer game on TV. A rerun of a soccer game with the play by play in Spanish. He doesn't speak Spanish.

"Self." Everything I post is scintillating, titallating, pure fucking genius and/or intensely thought provoking. Everything.

I chose a very conservative wingloading for the number of jumps I have. I don't stay current enough to fly something more aggressive. Took a canopy control course at 970 jumps. Other than what I paid for my student jumps it was the best money I've spent in skydiving. When students go on wind hold, I go on wind hold. I actively control my landing pattern so there are no other canopies on final when I am. I'll adjust my descent rate and place in traffic with brakes or spiraling to let the smaller, faster canopies land first and the bigger, slower canopies to land after me. I don't chase windsocks anymore; I land in the direction established. I fly a canopy that I can safely land in a 5 mph downwind. Stand up landings are nice but I'll take PLF'ing a downwind landing over a canopy collision anyday.

There goes the neighborhood. See ya Saturday.

For the same reason I dance and drink and screw... because there's nothing else to do...

I have one of those "addictive personalities." Spent almost a full year on Vicadin and Soma pretty much every 4-6 hours when I blew out two discs in my back and had to have the vertebrae fused - for awhile it was every 4 hours even at night. I worried about addiction as well, but I found them to be a lot easier to get off of than I was expecting. When it was time, I started stretching how long I went between pills - ie the first couple days I went 7 hours, then 8 hours, then 9, etc. Only took a week or so before I was down to one at bedtime; after another week or so of that I was off them completely. I had no withdrawal side effects. Like Krisanne said, take them while you need them. Your body needs rest and your brain needs some relief from constant pain. What did you do to your back??

Get the container that is sized for the main you're going to put in it.

This is assuming that the dzo has any money for you to recover. Very few dzo's have deep pockets. I think that if we are taking part in skydiving, it's up to us to take care of ourselves if shit happens. Even if that shit was caused by someone else cutting corners. It's my responsibility to assure myself that the dz I'm jumping at follows the rules. If I have a concern about an issue, I can ask about it. If I don't like the answer, I can go elsewhere. I'm not saying that I think a dzo in Kallend's example should get away with it. I'm assuming here, but I'd think there would be criminal penalties.
-
Deep down, me too. But since there is no longer a dz there, I call wherever I do the majority of my jumps "home."

How to make a major life decision in the next 48 hours
skybytch replied to kelel01's topic in The Bonfire
Then do it. Doctor would be a cool title. -
Then please be sure to inform every person you ever jump with, every pilot who ever flies a load you are on, every packer who ever packs your main, every rigger who ever packs your reserve, every person who sells you gear, every manufacturer who's equipment you jump and everybody else involved in you making a skydive of how you feel. If you think you have the right to sue for any reason, even though you've signed a legal document that explicitly states that you won't sue, then all of those people have the right to refuse to jump with you, fly a load you are on, pack your main or reserve and/or sell you gear.
-
Read the waiver. You are promising not to sue even if you can prove negligence. If you don't agree with that, don't sign it. You're right. Know why? Cuz real skydivers don't sue.
