When I started jumping containers were built with “pack opening bands” on them. Everyone told me not to hook up the bands on my B-4 because it would wear them out. One day I day sitting on the packing table and looking at my gear and to thinking…if you hook up the bands on your main for one week the will go bad but you leave the bands hooked up in your reserve for 60 days, that was a re-pack cycle then. That’s when I realized that a lot of what you are told amounted to “myth” or legend”. http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp55/mjosparky/Skydiving/4044101190_a6c31772ce_o.jpg Like everything else it depends on how well you care for your gear. The pouch will probably last longer than most jumpers will be in the sport. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

And that would put you on the same level as the guy you are talking to. You are never justified touching someone else’s reserve handle. You could be the one getting his ass handed to him. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

I think you were to go out and start “old school DZ” without the bother of BSR’s, non rated instructors and very few tandems to get in the way you would find out in 6 months max “why don't they exist.” You weren’t around when “old school DZ’s” were, but this is what you missed. This is a bit dated and a long read, but it gives you a pretty good picture of the industry. Sparky http://beta-www.bis.doc.gov/index.php/licensing/forms-documents/doc_view/26-aerial-delivery-parachutes-2004 My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
At 120 mph it is sometimes hard for the air to pass through the fine mesh and will tend to collapse it at first. That is why I used to make my pilot chutes with open mesh. Fine mesh on the left open on the right. http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp55/mjosparky/Skydiving/DSCN0395.jpg Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

What he said. If you deploy a ram air canopy at termina without a slider you would lose you shoes. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Quoting an FAA standard to someone in France is not really productive... I apologize. I will try and follow your lead and be more productive in the future. Back off John he was just trying to be productive in his posts. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

There are 2 things going on during canopy deployment. First is “snatch force”. The force generated during deployment when the bagged canopy reaches line extension and the pilot chute is accelerated back to the speed of the jumper. The greater the speed is between the P/C and the jumper at line extension the greater the felt force Second is “opening shock”. The force generated when the load is slowed by the opening canopy. Happens just after snatch force and depending on the mix of components it feels like snatch force and opening shock accrue at the same time. The amount of felt force during opening shock has a lot to do with the canopy design and how well it is reefed. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Last month I was on a 3 day run to Beatty, NV and we got into a discussion about tikes. One of the guys was riding one. He claimed that the state of CA does not consider them a “motorcycle”. He said since they feel that way he probably was exempt from the helmet law. I thought about it a few minutes and said that he just may be right. But on the other hand he would be required to wear a seat belt. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

That is why I would always wear an “approved” air crew harness with an “approved” chest mount hooked to it. In most cases the canopy and the harness I was testing were an unknown quantity. In the picture I am jumping an air crew system, DuraChute during Alpha Quals for the Navy. It seems you may be right. 105.3____ Definitions. For the purposes of this part— Reserve parachute means an approved parachute worn for emergency use to be activated only upon failure of the main parachute or in any other emergency where use of the main parachute is impractical or use of the main parachute would increase risk. But if you wear a second reserve that would satisfy this section. When I was testing I would wear an approved harness under the test rig and attach a chest mount to it. That way I was not depending on any part of the test item which at that point was not TSO’d. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

There is nothing illegal about doing a intention cutaway. Part 105 says you must be wearing an approved harness, an approved reserve and one main parachute. Sparky 105.43 Use of single-harness, dual-parachute systems. No person may conduct a parachute operation using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow any person to conduct a parachute operation from that aircraft using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, unless that system has at least one main parachute, one approved reserve parachute, and one approved single person harness and container that are packed as follows: My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

It is amazing how many people seem surprised that some DZO’s are putting the brakes on swooping. A blind person could see it coming. With the continued rise in fatalities under a good canopy I suspect you will see more of the same. Hate to say I told you so…………………… Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Peter, I didn’t say that I agreed with it. But the trend in attitudes seems to that jumpers feel DZ’s should be run the way they want it. They don’t demand this from other they business frequent why would they do it at a DZ? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
