You open at 13,000 ft and discover a mal. What next? (VIDEO)
mjosparky replied to skydiverek's topic in Safety and Training
It seems that there is some confusion about a “line over” vs. a “step through”. They are 2 completely different malfunctions. One is created on the ground and the other happens during opening. The video shows a “step through” of the left outside A/B line. The reason he had to hold so much right toggle to keep it straight the “step through” had the same effect as a left front riser turn. As for cutting the line or cutting away, that is a personal decision. With the exception of a handful of test jumps with a set matrix I have always lived by the rule if I can’t land it, it’s gone. I don’t do rigging in the air. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

It is because the FAA does not have a regullation that clearly show that! They have never let ambiguity get in their way before. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

This is your quote and it is the first paragraph of Part 105.43. I would say that is an FAA Regulation. You continue to interpet the Regs. the way by what you think not by what they say. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Part 105.3 and Part 105.43 105.3____ Definitions. For the purposes of this part— Parachute operation means the performance of all activity for the purpose of, or in support of, a parachute jump or a parachute drop. This parachute operation can involve, but is not limited to, the following persons: parachutist, parachutist in command and passenger in tandem parachute operations, drop zone or owner or operator, jump master, certificated parachute rigger, or pilot. 105.43 Use of single-harness, dual-parachute systems. No person may conduct a parachute operation using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow any person to conduct a parachute operation from that aircraft using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, unless that system has at least one main parachute, one approved reserve parachute, and one approved single person harness and container that are packed as follows: (a) The main parachute must have been packed within 120 days before the date of its use of a certificated parachute rigger, the person making the next jump with that parachute, or a non-certificated person under the direct supervision of a certification parachute rigger. (b) The reserve parachute must have been packed by a certificated parachute rigger— (1) Within 120 days before the date of its use, if its canopy, shroud, and harness are composed exclusively of nylon, rayon, or similar synthetic fiber or material that is substantially resistant to damage from mold, mildew, and other fungi, and other rotting agents propagated in a moist environment; or Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
When was the safest period in skydiving?
mjosparky replied to dgw's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Skydiving has never been “safe”. Whenever advancements in gear, training and skills eliminated fatalities in one area skydivers would just come up with different ways to kill themselves. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
You are right it did start about the time “Jaws” came”. The term was coined by one Richard Hayden, father of “Air Trash”. He got fed up with the way people would always say “Blue Skies” on takeoff and started yelling back “Black Death”. It soon became the battle cry of all “Air Trash”. USPA's "Championship" Demo Team?
mjosparky replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Saturday night I was chatting with some current and former members of the US team and over the last year they often only had 5 dollars in their pocket. They might have been lying to me, but I doubt it. They also might just be REALLY bad with money. I know I had to loan some money to one US team member to buy a plane ticket to go compete. I also know that I had to help some others with some discounts. So, maybe I am wrong.... But maybe not. Hey Ron, I think we could both be wrong and the truth is somewhere in the middle. Your attitude of helping other jumpers is something I just posted about in another thread. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
You may think it’s harsh, I think it’s truthful. There are more people making money off of students than there are students staying in the sport. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Far too many people forget that skydiving is a recreational activity. All they can see is what’s in it for “me”. What can I do to get free jumps, free gear and anything else free? Things that use to be free to a new jumper now have a price tag on it. There are even rules in place to prevent other wise qualified, experienced jumpers from jumping with new jumper for free. The same thing happened to skiing about 20 years ago and today you can’t get out of the parking lot with being charged for something. Skydiving has lost it’s soul and many of the things that bound jumpers together. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

USPA's "Championship" Demo Team?
mjosparky replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was told, not verified, that members of some of the top team make up to $85,000 a year coaching. Considering this may be an exaggeration and they only make $50,000 a year, which is still a far cry from living hand to mouth. Most of the top teams are heavily sponsored, if not totally, by various DZ’s and gear companies I suspect their savings during a year of training would be far more than the cost of attending a world meet. Back in the day we would do it every weekend and pay for our own slot. The only requirements were a willingness to learn and a promise to pass it on. Today it seems like everything is geared toward bleeding the student and getting free jumps. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Trying to learn the about without some form of coaching or instruction is called flailing. After 15 to 20 jumps he still won’t be able to freefly but he will get better at flailing. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

My first canopy was a C-9 with a 7-TU mod. I think the difference between the it and the 5-TU was a dramatic increase in decent rate. I put a few jumps on a 9-TU and it was like being in freefall. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

USPA's "Championship" Demo Team?
mjosparky replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I feel the same way, however I'm stuck by the fact the ratings are the only game in town. I'd like to change things, but having seen it from the inside, I fear there is little we can do with the apathy of most of the membership. I'd be for starting an alternate organization more aligned with the goals of airport defense, FAA representation, and instructor ratings, leaving all the nonsensical stuff behind. We had our run and I am ashamed to say that my generation didn’t do shit to put a stop to what is happening now. We were too self absorbed to bother. We allowed the tail to way the dog for too long. Any change will have to come from you young guys. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
