If there wasn't a downside to them they would be an industry standard still, but that isn't the case. One And you are right, it is a poor choice for a wing suit jump. But many who will say this can't tell you why. There are a lot of things in the sport that have bad raps without a good reason. Skydivers accept something they hear as fact and pass it on. Before you know it the 45 degree exit is the only way to figure separation. I am sure you understand what I am saying but way too many haven’t seen the ball since kick off.     Present TSO minimum performance standards are AS-8015 Rev. B. The “AS” if for Aerospace Standard. They were developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers. To date PIA has not been able to get the FAA accept their standards. (PIA TS 135) There 2 weights that you see thrown around. One is the Maximum Operation Weight and the other is Test Weight. MOW is the weight the system/canopy is certified to. Test weigh is MOW x 1.2 with a minimum of 264. There are other thinks involved but that’s the basics.     At the very least it takes the maturity to realize that a jump with a student/tandem is not about “me, me”. It is not something that can be taught or coached.     The problem is USPA does not have the horse power to do anything about this type of situation. If the FAA gets involved the back lash could affect everyone.     Not trying to harp on your comment. But military training rarely get exclusions for most things. The value of training doesn't supersede rules or safety. Operational requirements and missions can be sometimes left up to certain people's discretion. These operational do still have limits but for mission success can have a little more flexibility. Plus I think you missed joke. In the US military operations of any type are exempt from FAR's.
