  3. In your drawing path “1” is the best way to get separation after break off on any size dive. The purpose is to gain horizontal distance with the least loss of altitude. Path “2” is the method used in old school 10 speed stars. The purpose is to close on the base as fast as possible. This included both vertical and horizontal distance. That is where the “head down no lift dive” came from. You would exit, go head down, level out and hit the formation like a freight train. Dangerous but fast. 8. A rigger needs to pipe in here to tell about reserve testing specs as per TSO....time and/or altitude or preferably both. 4.3.6 Functional Test (Normal Pack All Types): For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable opening time for parachute canopies with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less, is 3 s from the moment of pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable opening time shall be increased by 0.01 s for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). Alternatively altitude loss instead of time may be measured and the maximum allowable altitude loss may be calculated as follows. For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable altitude loss for parachutes with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less is 300 ft (91.5 m) from the altitude at pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable altitude loss shall be increased by 1 ft for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). NOTE: Altitude loss measurements must be measured along a vertical trajectory only. However, the deviation from the vertical produced by a gliding main parachute descending with a vertical velocity of less than 20 FPS (6.1 m/s) shall be acceptable. If the plane is going down and you are at 300 feet you are not getting out. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  11. I don’t he made a decision and contributed to his death. There was a problem and he and failed to decide what if any action to take. From what I understand the Cypres functioned as advertised. Its sole function is to cut the reserve closing loop. If the loop does pass through the cutter this is not a failure of the AAD. It is not my place to decide if Mr. Mark and/or Archway should be sued. But I would say that the rigger who packed the reserve in question bears some degree of responsibility in this fatality. 14. I doubt that there would come a situation where this would be an issue. It’s just something to think about. Reserve canopies are tested to 120% of their maximum operating weight. These tests are done with a “test dummy”. If you are loading your reserve at or above these weights you are the dummy. When free flying was in its infancy there were at least 2 cases of premature reserve deployment where the canopy failed due to the speed and unusual body postion. 15. It is a great idea to have regular check up regardless of age. Also regular exercise can make a difference. But you have to take it case by case. Never sell old guys short. “Age and treachery will beat youth and skill every time” Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  16. AS8015-A allows testing in 3 different categories with varying weight and speed. NAS-804 allows for testing in 2 categories. Since neither standard is in affect what the speeds and weights used are moot. The current TSO-C23-d uses AS8015-B as its standard and will probably be in effect for some time. 23. It is not a “long standing track record”. It has been in the last 20 to 30 years that claims against cigarette companies would make it to trial. I think that is the point of some of the discussion going on here. Today you have jumpers with several thousand jumps who have never jumped a 7 cell LoPo canopy. You are comparing apples with oranges. And sadly way too many new guys get bad advice for other jumpers who are trying to sell their old gear so they and down size to a canopy they can’t handle.
