No I don't! You in the northern hemisphere are just getting into summer, the prime dying season. 14 people died in 2011 from high performance canopy landings or collisions. You guys look like doubling that this year. Is that something to be proud of? Worldwide there were 31 fatalities under open canopies in 2011. But then again who is counting. That would be morbid. John, I posted the SB from RWS that outlined the procedure for testing the rings. (#30) It also explains how to replace them if they fail the test. Very few riggers or jumpers for that matter had access to a Rockwell hardness testing equipment. Even if they did, RWS did not give any parameter for the test. I did manage to test mine with a Rockwell machine and it came out at Rc-50. They can be very expensive. http://www.timegroupusa.com/index.php?cPath=2_84_93 Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Back in the early 80's there was a batch of 3-rings that got through the fabrication process without the second heat-treatment process to re-harden them. A few of those soft rings got elongated into ovals upon hard openings. ... " ...................................................................... The soft rings were stamped RW-1-81 and RW-1-82. The repair was to cut off the soft rings and replace them with screw-in RW-6 rings. http://www.unitedparachutetechnologies.com/PDF/Support/Product%20Service%20Bulletins/09207.pdf Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I was involved in the testing and TSO live jumps on the thin pack system you wear in the E2-C. http://safeeurope.com/media/3013/heiko_froehlich.pdf Page 4 Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

200 mph (180 KEAS) is already the standard in the US and Europe. In the US mains are not subject to testing, I am not sure about Europe. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

When I was actively jumping I would read the SIM 2 or 3 times a year. It would keep me up to date on the information and any changes made. It would also assure that when a newer jumper asked a question I could answer it with facts instead of making it up. (Which is done way too often) Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Incorrectly stowed brake -> minor malfunction & damage
mjosparky replied to sunkenstate's topic in Safety and Training
Outside of stow your own brakes (which I'm guessing was the point of some of the above)...with respect to the brake (setting? guide?) ring I'm guessing that: 1) setting below the ring ensures that brakes are set deep enough in relation to the rest of the lines. 2) the ring handles the opening shock load hence the ripped toggle keeper if the brakes were set above the ring Am I out in left field? If you stow the brakes with the cat’s eye above the ring it will blow on opening. The toggle stow keeper will usually be ripped off. No big thing, you are not the only one that has done it. +1 We got away with a lot of things learning when there was no one to learn from. Learn from others mistakes, you might not live long enough to make them yourself. Agreed. About a year ago I went to the USCG On-Scene Coordinator's Course (Advanced PIO) in Yorktown. One thing I did learn was, "This is the information we currently have... We will let you know more at xx/xx/xx at 18:00 hrs." The initial report need be swift and transparent, the initial conclusion needs to be as accurate as possible, the next and subsequent meetings should immediately, 1) reinforce the initial conclusions, or 2) correct the first conclusion and give a 'why' as to that conclusion's inaccuracy. Subsequent meetings at regularly scheduled intervals... each a building block (yep same lingo) towards "Trust and Truth." “We don’t know yet……that is something we are looking into” is so much better than a little white lie. I found out many years ago that I shouldn’t tell lies; I am not smart enough to remember what I said. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

How much you weigh out the door will make a big difference on what canopy you should choose. You mentioned you haven’t jumped in 23 years so that should put you somewhere around 45. Remember that at 45 we are not as cat like as we used to be. I would suggest you contact PD and demo a few canopies. http://www.performancedesigns.com/demo_sport.asp You might also look into a Silhouette, also made by PD. http://www.performancedesigns.com/products.asp?product=si Good luck and welcome back.
