How long does it take for your reserve to open?
mjosparky replied to docjohn's topic in Safety and Training
AS8015-B 4.3.6 Functional Test (Normal Pack All Types): For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable opening time for parachute canopies with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less, is 3 s from the moment of pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable opening time shall be increased by 0.01 s for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). 4.3.6 (Continued): Alternatively altitude loss instead of time may be measured and the maximum allowable altitude loss may be calculated as follows. For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable altitude loss for parachutes with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less is 300 ft (91.5 m) from the altitude at pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable altitude loss shall be increased by 1 ft for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). NOTE: Altitude loss measurements must be measured along a vertical trajectory only. However, the deviation from the vertical produced by a gliding main parachute descending with a vertical velocity of less than 20 FPS (6.1 m/s) shall be acceptable. Incident statistics for varying disciplines

Rodger is right; the "blast handle" was for ejection seat rigs. The older ones where the pilot got in the plane with a rig one. (back or seat) When he ejected there was a "butt strap" that would tighten up and pop him out of the seat and he had to but the ripcord himself. With the outside splines over the housing and the “post” on the inside the windblast of ejection would not blow the handle loose. See attached pictures. And who is quified to make that determination on a cypres? The average skydiver? In some cases the patient would surely die if the expired medical products were not used. A skydiver will not surely die if he/she does not used an expired cypres. But they might die if they do use it. See the difference? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Someone told me he doesn't wear a jockstrap. He wares a pink thong and a nose mitten. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

The rigs in this picture all have a belly band. I always felt they made the rig feel more secure and snug. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Any turbine DC3's operating out there?
mjosparky replied to Trae's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
All up they are around 300 pounds plus and they get out at around 350 agl. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
If the rig was TSO’d with a blast handle, you can still use one.

Jumpmaster/helicopter question
mjosparky replied to pincheck's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
All choppers have an altitude limit at which they can hover "out of ground effect". With a full load most 4 to 6 place birds will not be able to hold a hover at 5,000 feet on a warm day. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Maybe thats why they lost the competition? At 250 lb. it had a decent rate of under 16 fps. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

I have seen it happen time after time on tests and have it happen twice myself. Once on a demo. If you dive out of the plane, head down, back to the tail and pull immediately, you canopy will open, you will swing under it. The will still be horizontal relative wind and it can blow you PC over the nose of the canopy. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

I think you mean this one. http://www.paraflite.com/PDF/XT-11&R.pdf Attached is a picture of me testing one built by Irvin to compete against Para=Flite in the ATPS program. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
I could be wrong, but I think I heard a saying that you're a tourist until you've been jumping at least 10 years?... In my experience, most people seem to fizzle out around the 3 year period. I am not sure about the 3 year period, but I know most are gone by 10 years. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Suggested opening direction for hop'n'pop(subterminal)?
mjosparky replied to phoenixlpr's topic in Safety and Training
??? If you open from terminal, your canopy opens vertically. Have you seen a high speed static line? Canopy opens almost horizontally. (speaking real slow) If the relative wind is from your back during deployment the PC will blow forward or toward the nose of the canopy. Yes I have seen static line deployment up to 180 KEAS. The one thing I noticed was there was no pilot chute. As I said in my first post "think about it". If it is over your head, forget it and exit and deploy any way you want. You asked a question, got an answer, end of discussion. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

What the hell kind of canopy is that? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Use a smaller wrench. If you are having touble with a speed link, maybe you see a rigger. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Nick, I was jumping Perris during that time. Now which side of the hill is the big dog? And when was the last time you saw Tom or Alan make a jump. Some people are just tourists. Like a Nova, a bright flash and then gone like the dust they kick up. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

About 3 years ago I spent a week in Belize doing demos for Maya Island Air. We made 7 jumps in 6 days. They provided us with an Air van. All of our jumps were from 4,000 feet or less. The plane makes a good platform for demos, high wing and a sliding door. But I think it would have limited use in general skydiving. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Do you deploy on your back? If not, how come? Think about it. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
If you are going to rig, rig right or don’t rig at all. Where do you draw the line on what you will fudge on? Following only the rules you want is a fucked up attitude. Too cool to die, want to bet? I use expired cypres units on reserves rigged on test items. If the test item does not work the cypres fires the reserve and saves the $10,000 worth of telemetry. Suggested opening direction for hop'n'pop(subterminal)?
mjosparky replied to phoenixlpr's topic in Safety and Training
On a sub-terminal opening, face the relative wind. That is facing the aircraft, head up. If you dive out, head down, during deployment the relative wind can take your P/C and blow it over the nose of your canopy. It can then get tangled with the "A" lines. And before someone says it won’t reach, how many people know how long their bridle is and what is the distance from the bridle attachment point of their canopy to the nose? Without checking!
