If I remember right the Phantom series of canopies were a copy of the Para-Inovators reserves, 24' & 26', but with one less lateral band. And then there was the kevlar thing. And Mick is right, if you have not done it before, they would not be a good choice for a reserve. I have never seen or even heard of a B-12 coming undone in free fall. Do you have any first hand knowledge of this happening? They have the same rating as the friction adapters used in a step in and they were designed for leg straps. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Thanks Jerry. Some day I would like to spend some time following you around. The possibility of learning things would be great.

I believe Bill is a Senior rigger. You do not need to be a rigger to design, manufacture or sell gear. Even the TSO QA points during manufacturing can be preformed by a non rigger. A rigger certificate is only required after the gear has been manufactured and becomes property of the public. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

FAA regulations, Part 105, which are law, say it is illegal. At least in the US. § 105.43 Use of single-harness, dual-parachute systems. No person may conduct a parachute operation using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow any person to conduct a parachute operation from that aircraft using a single-harness, dual-parachute system, unless that system has at least one main parachute, one approved reserve parachute, and one approved single person harness and container that are packed as follows: Items (a) and (b) not posted. (c) If installed, the automatic activation device must be maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions for that automatic activation device. Go to a Military Surplus store and ask for flare parachutes. They will be around 10/12 inches up to about 20 inches. They are dirt cheap. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

You are right. I should have read the complete document. The way I read this, the main risers can only be used with the system they were certificated with. Sparky 5. COMPONENT QUALIFICATIONS: 5.1 Parachutes may be qualified as complete assemblies or as separate components (such as a canopy, a stowage container [pack], and/or a riser/s. The airworthiness of a parachute assembly, including other separately approved nonoriginal components, is the responsibility of the manufacturer who performs the certificating tests for the parachute assembly. The manufacturer shall publish and make available a list of interchangeable components which have passed the following tests in 4.3 when tested in conjunction with the assembly or component(s) being certificated. 5.1.1 Canopy Including Suspension Lines: 4.3.3, 4.3.4.1 (or 4.3.4.2), 4.3.5, 4.3.6, 4.3.7, 4.3.8, 4.3.9 5.1.2 Deployment Device: 4.3.3, 4.3.4.1 (or 4.3.4.2), 4.3.5, 4.3.6, 4.3.9 5.1.3 Pilot Chute (Including Bridle): 4.3.3, 4.3.4.1 (or 4.3.4.2), 4.3.5, 4.3.6, 4.3.9 5.1.4 Stowage Container (Pack): 4.3.2.1, 4.3.2.3, 4.3.3, 4.3.6, 4.3.4.1 (or 4.3.4.2), 4.3.5, 4.3.9 5.1.5 Harness: 4.3.4.1, 4.3.6, 4.3.9 5.1.6 Actuation Device (Ripcord and/or Reserve Static Line): 4.3.1, 4.3.2, 4.3.6.2, 4.3.9 5.1.7 Actuation Device (Reserve Static Line): 4.3.1, 4.3.6.2 5.1.8 Riser(s): 4.3.4.1 (or 4.3.4.2), 4.3.6, 4.3.9 My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I agree, the altitude loss will vary with descent rate speed. But 3 seconds will always be 3 seconds. Is that why most manufactures choose to test to the time criteria rather then the altitude loss. 4.3.6 Functional Test (Normal Pack All Types): For all 4.3.6 tests the maximum allowable opening time for parachute canopies with a maximum operating weight of 250 lb (113.4 kg) or less, is 3 s from the moment of pack opening. For parachutes with a maximum operating weight of greater than 250 lb (113.4 kg) the maximum allowable opening time shall be increased by 0.01 s for every pound of maximum operating weight in excess of 250 lb (113.4 kg). You can put a TSO label on your shorts but that does not make them a TSO'd component of you gear. These are the components included in TSO-C23d. AS8015-B 2.1.2 SINGLE HARNESS RESERVE PARACHUTE ASSEMBLY: A certificated parachute assembly (including the reserve deployment initiation device, deployment control device, canopy, risers, stowage container, harness, and actuation device) that is worn in conjunction with a main parachute assembly used for premeditated jumps. Using different risers on your main does not void a TSO. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
