  1. Because someone does not agree with your position does not mean they are misinforming young riggers. You are not the final word on what the FAA reg. say or seem to say. Neither am I, so I would suggest young riggers read everything they can find on rigging and decide for themselves I would say the rigger in question does not “understand the current manufacturer's instructions for the operation involved” and would probably make the same mistake with or without the instructions. jmo "I never stated that there was a FAR XX.XXX . " Thought you said you were not talking about FAR's I am not trying to circumvent, challenge or read between the lines. And I am also not reading into them what I want to see. While I will be one of the first to say that it is a good practice to have the Manufacture’s Instructions on hand for any packing you do, it is not required by FAA regulations with the exception of one brand of Sports rig that I am aware of. A good research project for you. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. Thanks for the information. I was not aware that Manufactures were calling for tacking on the reserve use of soft links. Thanks for the links, I have downloaded them for reference in the future. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. While this particular fatality involved a Slink it was the method that the excess brake line was stowed that caused the hang up. Ever with the tabs tacked this could have happened. The jumper was stowing the excess brake line in the loop at the top of the riser. The same space you are trying to keep the taps/ring in with hand tacking. It is shown in the PD Safety Sheet on Control System Malfunctions. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. Every ripcord is supposed to be marked with the following information but the recent problem with Capewell pins brought out the fact that they are not. Had they been marked as required, it would have been an easy matter to identify those that were manufacture using the suspect batch. From AS801-B 4.2.2 Primary Actuation Device/Ripcord: The following information shall be marked on the primary actuation device/ripcord: a. Part number, including dash number b. Manufacturer’s identification c. TSO-C23( ) d. Batch, serial number, or date of manufacture (month and year) Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  5. What type of soft links do you have on your reserve? I am not aware of any were the manufacture calls for tacking. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  8. I carry a hook knife like the one in the attached pictures. I have a pocket sewn on each of my jumpsuits on the front just below the chest strap. I can see the knife and reach it with either hand. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  10. I have only done it once, that was when I became acquainted with the term "Pain is an excellent teacher". And you are right about being stuck. That’s why I suggested carrying the pliers in your pocket. I was able to stretch out with one leg/foot and knock the rigging snips off another machine. Finally was able to scoot them close enough to pick up and use as a screwdriver to take the needle out. And no, I didn’t feel stupid, why do you ask? 12. Here are a couple of pictures of Bob from a few years ago. It was my 2000th. at one of the Old Farts at High Desert A/P in So. Cal. I look up and here he comes, no gloves, no helmet, no jumpsuit, no goggles and hand tracking his way in. He was wearing a piggyback rig but it did have a ripcord main. Appropriately it was out of Skip’s DC-3, 6MA. He is the one with the red dot. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. Yes, for the needle to go through your thumb you have to place it squarely under the presser foot. It didn't take me anytime at all to figure that out. I must be a fast learner. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  14. You could put in on a torso dummy and throw it off a building and static line the rsl. That might give you a pretty good idea. You could even get fancy and rig a load link in and find out what the pull forces would be.

  16. The more airspace the restrict the less is open to fly in. Where do you draw the line. We both know that it does not make the White House any safer from someone fling a C-150 full of "bang". Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  18. If you move up to a 7 class, harness machine, keep a pair of pliers in your pocket. They are great for getting the needle out of you thumb. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  20. Ya know, I thought about that too... in the scenario where the ball comes off the end of the Reserve Rip Cord... an RSL may pull the reserve... but then I did a double take thinking it just may strip the cable through the housing and leave the pin in place... hmmmm... guess the only way to know would be to do some sort of test drops... MJO! You up for it??? Hey Zig, That is some good thinking. (you engineer types do too much of that) That does present an interesting "what if". You know me, if the money is right I will test what ever you got. You could rig it with a dummy ripcord system and do an intentional cutaway. You build it and I will jump it. 21. Chuck, I do every time I inspect and pack a reserve. Its not smart not to.
  22. We are slowing starting to lose our forefathers, the men and women who created skydiving through their courage and talent. In the next 5 to 10 years most of them will be gone. And with them will go an unbelievable amount of knowledge, experience and wisdom the likes of which will never again be seen in skydiving. They are an irreplaceable treasure. The younger jumpers need to take the time to sit and talk with these history books and find out how skydiving came to be. Condolences to Don’s family and friends. 23. You really don't get it do you? Nothing you have posted says a Rigger must have the Manufacture's instructions on hand to inspect and pack an approved parachute. You have quoted everything from the standards that the canopy is tested to, to the handbook used to administer a test to a rigger applicant. The closest you have come is a section from Part-65: (f) Exercise the privileges of his certificate and type rating unless he understands the current manufacturer's instructions for the operation involved When Derek posted the same quote you said he was wrong. Some people haven’t seen the ball since kickoff. Door, I’m gone. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  24. Right on the money Jerry, the cable is steel aircraft cable 3/32” (MIL-W-5424) and minimum tensile strenghtis920 lbs. If the end of the ripcord had just a round ball on the end it is rated at 736 lbs. or 80% of the cable. If the end has a round ball with a shank, it is rated at 100% of the cable.
