  1. That is a carryover from the days when rigs had belly band and the pilot chute pouch was not the belly band. The stiffener was to help prevent twisted bands. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. Your being a “former cop” mentality is showing through. I am a former Fire Capt. and I spent 30 years dealing with cops that thought they had all the answers. You don’t know the “law”, you know what some “laws” say not what they mean. Unless you have passed the bar and I am sure you haven’t. As was mentioned above there is no liability insurance available for skydiving. One more thing you didn’t know. There is nothing in your prior life that can be applied to skydiving. Have you ever been involved in an investigation or even seen the results of one? But you will post your opinion on their validly. I refer to the first line in my post. Until you learn something about the issue at hand maybe you should listen more and STFU. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. As someone mentioned, what you are doing serves no useful purpose. It will be a huge distraction while you are guessing if it working or not. The best altimeter ever made…it is easy to see, it updates faster than you can think, requires no batteries and is less expensive than most. 5. No more calls....we have a winner. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. In almost 40 years around the sport I can count on one hand the rigs I have seen with a derogation problem with the hardware. SS is more expensive, slips more and is more brittle. But it does look cool. Stick with the Cadmium, put the $200 toward jumping. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  7. You're really picking at semantics here. Yes, an RSL could technically not be the contributing factor in those four cases, the lack of an RSL is the contributing factor. But why muddy the waters? The whole point is if there were armed RSLs the outcome could have been different... I mean, replace "RSL" in all my previous arguments with "the decision of the individual to purchase/jump a rig with no RSL" and we're back to square one - I still want to know and it's still relevant what the gear configuration jumped by the individual is (technically also entirely the choice of the individual). Having been involved in more fatality investigations then I care to remember, I can assure you I am not mudding the waters. Any investigative report on a fatality of any type is a game of semantics. The words you put in ink today you may have to explain in court tomorrow. If it "technically not be the contributing factor" don't call it one. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. Phew! One drogue, 34 others. I was wondering if there would be 35 drogues out, and a giant pile of waivers down on the ground. We tried that but ran into fall rate problems. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  11. When I first started jumping RW was considered a “Black Art” and was not allowed at some DZ’s. It has always taken time for new things to be accepted by the group. Skydiving in all its forms is unforgiving and always will be. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn't continue refine the skills needed to make it safer. They have developed the methodology to teach people to fly jet fighters a 1400 mph and then land on a carrier deck at 150 mph. It can surely be done for canopies flying a 60 mph. As for “unsanctioned schools” the one that Doug Davis referenced is run by members of PD factory Team. These guys and gal are probably the best collection of HP canopy pilots in the world. This is what the sport has needed for many years to help stem the carnage. Sparky http://flight-1.com/sport/ My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  12. I started test jumping in the early 80’s and was lucky enough to survive. But I was also lucky to have the exposure to the rapid development in gear. I learned from some of the best inventive minds in the sport and am sure those lessons contributed to my survival over the years. Jumping today is in many ways just like jumping when I started. For the most part those that took time to learn survived, those that didn’t got talked about in the bar. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. No, now they are starting to use “square” canopies for mass drops. Sparky http://www.flickr.com/photos/peosoldier/4997094074/ My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  15. Here is a tandem queen for you. She has a C license and her own tandem rig. The picture is 35 way tandem record done for Jump for the Cause in support of spinal cord research. She is one hell of a lady. 16. Says the person that won't come to my boogie. I ain't 'fraid no rednecks. Prove it. Dude, I can't jump. That won’t be a problem….you sit real still and I’ll do the jumping. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  17. That’s a 28% difference.....something had to be on dangerous side. I would tend to with what the people that make them says fits. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  18. I cant speak to advancement or not within the USPA formally but I do know Flight 1 has put together a real nice program they are teaching. Ive taken the 101 and 102 course. There was so much amazing material to try and absorb Im considering going down and taking the whole thing again in Feb. I wasn’t aware of what Flight 1 is doing. Thanks for the information. Knowledge is power. A smart man takes every opportunity to gain more. Knowledge can keep you alive in this sport. Sparkly I just went to their web site and am impressed. I sure up and coming jumpers will take advantage of what they have to offer. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  19. I can’t give you an answer without trying to bull shit my through. Give a couple of days to see if I can come up with something that will help. When I was on the job I used to tell the rookies that I didn’t have all the answers but I’ve been around long enough where I know where to look. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  20. If it was a hobby such as any other adult hobby I would agree. But I've always viewed it more importantly as life saving equipment first, sports equipment second. I have also seen a hodgepod of mismatched gear and other items sold to newbies which I'd consider junk and not bother with myself. There is no ethics in used gear sales. Anybody will sell you anything and tell you how wonderful it is. Your viewpoint is your viewpoint and if your comfortable with it fine. However I have seen a lot of newbie jumpers hurt with used gear. I don't think of it as a "New Car" I think of it as the state of the art medical treatment your going to want once an injury occurs. Also industry veterans always promote used shitty mismatched gear as being perfectly acceptable. Their vested interest is in fact a conflict of interests. I once chopped and was without a main to jump and the offers of substitute used replacement gear from "somebody" with something to sell really proved to me my safety was less of a concern than the money they needed for something I thought was not suitable and didn't want to hurt myself jumping. I'd buy a used car to save money. Not equipment I am going to trust with my life. I've also seen actual injuries as a result of unsuitable gear, and many newbies jump gear I thought were accidents waiting to happen. Your post shows how little you know about gear. But as an opinion, it’s yours and you are entitled to it. Just like NWflyer is entitled to hers. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  21. Skydiving is a recreational activity not a sweat shop. Each jumper is free to make his own choice on how to outfit his gear. The only limitation is it must be TSO’d. So I hate to tell you, but are really wrong. As for the DZO, camera flyers are “independent contractors” providing their own gear. Most DZ’s do not have the number of employees to fall under most of OSHA’s regulations so it is mute point. So I guess you are wrong. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  22. This is where I really get annoyed. The lack of an RSL is not a contributing factor. An RSL may have saved them (we don't know), but the fact that they didn't have one certainly did not CONTRIBUTE to the accident / fatality. Really? So if someone cuts away at an adequate altitude for reserve deployment (No RSL) and doesn't pull their reserve (for whatever reason) until it's too late, would the lack of an RSL NOT be a contributing factor? It certainly couldn't be proven that the RSL would definitely have saved them, but it would have initiated deployment of the reserve at a much higher altitude, giving them a much better chance of survival. It's a little "nit-picky" and I understand where you are coming from, but I can see the lack of an RSL being a contributing factor. Others may have a different opinion. That's cool too
  23. I made several jumps with quick ejectors, and I have 350 on a PC and several hundred more on small round canopies. I like a harness to be light and comfortable, then I don't need to hop out of the legstraps on landing. Pull out pilot chutes are another great change, giving more control over deployment, not to mention making it lots faster. A rig over 16 or 17 lbs seems such a waste of gravity... And you park a car on your rig overnight so you get one more guy between the door and fuselage. The less weight you went out the door with farther you could carry your speed before flaring. I think it was called swooping before the term was high jacked. You 10 man freaks are all the same.
