How many people even buy tires rated to 200 kts. for their car. Knots is usually a measurement of speed for planes or boats not cars. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

There is a large difference between making weekend "instructor" jumps and working in the industry for a living. One is a "vocation" and the other is "avocation". a subordinate occupation pursued in addition to one's vocation especially for enjoyment : HOBBY My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

From what you said your DZ might be a club. But if they are taking tandem up it is a business and customer relations are important. Most DZ’s today are a business and as such catering to the customer is paramount. Unless you are the DZO you are not packing in your hanger on your ground. You are a guest to the person running the business. How does a customer of the business “sneak” into the business? If they are paying for a skydive they have as much right to be there as you do. Where does it say that socializing has to involve being crude, rude and obnoxious? Would you and your friends behave in that manor at your mother’s house? If not why would you consider is appropriate when around some else’s mother or children. What are the chances "he or she" will see some adult behavior? It takes very little effort to be courteous and considerate of other people around you. Give it a try sometime. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
I sorry, what did you say. I spent 30 years riding fire trucks and DC-3's.

Since you were the only one there at the time, and you walked away from it, it seems like you did the right thing for you. It easy to second guess someone who is dealing with an emergency, real or perceived. But the bottom line is you and you alone have to make the decision with the experience and knowledge you left the plane with. Some guy on the ground with loads of knowledge and experience can’t help a bit. To add to you “experience and knowledge” from this incident, as soon as your reserve is repacked, get in the hanging harness and attempt to set up the same situation. With the pin in its proper place pull the handle out and let it swing loose. How close is it to what you saw? But always remember that decisions you make up high are usually one you will have to live ,or die, with down low

Zeek, All the questions you have about your new Optima should have been asked before you bought the thing. The first letter in OSHA is for Occupational and skydiving is Recreational and in recreation things sometimes get a little loud. Think drag racing. Have you used it on a jump yet? It is harder to hear at freefall speeds even with a FF helmet. All of the above are "Thoughts? Opinions?".

if no regulation how often would you repack your reserve

This is just a wild ass guess but if it looses power by removing the battery/s I bet it quits working. But since in the real world it would slowly lose power as the battery drained you still don't know what it would do if the the battery went too low to operate the damn thing. Battery Status Full capacity: Symbol shows two black bars inside the battery icon. Half capacity: Symbol shows one black bar inside the battery icon. Low capacity: Symbol shows no black bars, just an “empty” battery icon. Battery should be replaced as soon as possible. The “Low bat” flashes once every 15 sec. Caution: Do not make night jumps at sub zero temperatures when bat. shows low capacity. Empty battery: The battery icon flashes. Replace battery immediately. But if you have your own you should go for it.

Does that mean it alright to act like a sleaze ball in the student area? Some of the behavior I have seen from instructors and others working with students would get them thumped if it was my 18 year old daughter. Acting like a punk is never appropriate. If you like the gear it must be "cool". Last time I talked to Dan it was still gone. For some reason that really pisses me off more than if it had been my gear. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

How much difference is there between a 190 nine cell and a 190 seven cell? Or a 7 cell made of ZP and a 9 cell made of F-111? How about a hybrid? A lot of the variables could be eliminated if the manufactures would just use the same base line to begin with. They can’t even agree on how to measure the area of a canopy. How many people voted for a given time because they had a reason or understood what goes on with a repack? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
I was involved in "real" testing of parachutes and parachute related equipment for over 20 years. Your "real world" testing is just that, the spoken word. There is no validity to it. You have no test parameters, test controls or any objectives at all. You have people with no idea what they are doing trying different things, coming up with erroneous conclusions and calling it fact. You see a lot of that in skydiving. Jumper Joe Blow said his friend saw this happen and before you know it becomes the real world for a bunch of morons. If you think the manufacture of any piece of equipment has not done a decent job of testing the gear, don’t use it. But don’t be so arrogant as to think you can do a better job of it.
