This is something that you can you do enough of.

You are right, the suspended weight will affect how a canopy flies. Your opinion is wrong. I have been involved in testing for over 20 years and have seen many canopies that were tested beyond their design limits blow up. This can happen by the use of too much weight or by too much speed. Or it can be a combination of the 2 that create a force higher than the canopy was designed to take. You are giving advice on what will affect a canopy during deployment and you do not understand the basic physics involved. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

The fact that many do it does not make it smart or legal. People have died deploying a reserve outside of the design envelope. 5. Reserve Sizing There are several factors to consider when choosing the size of your reserve. The most important factor to consider is the maximum exit weight limit for a particular size. Many jumpers exceed the maximum weight limit for their main canopies. While this may be foolish, it is not illegal. The maximum exit weight for a reserve is a legal limit. In the United States, it is a violation of federal law to jump a reserve if your exit weight exceeds this limit, and other countries may enforce this limit as well. The maximum exit weight is published on the Warning Label sewn to the tail of every PD Reserve, in the PD Series Ram-Air Reserve Owner’s Manual, and in the product information on our web site at www.performancedesigns.com. 50 bucks a jump for coahcing?

Nick, Are you aware that in the history of the labor movement what was lost during a job action was never recovered by those involved? Do you really think pilots and instructors at the average DZ should get $30,000 to $40,000 dollars a year? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
can one of you old-timers explain....
mjosparky replied to crotalus01's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
What was interesting was USPA did not have the authority to ban squat. If was up to the FAA to ban components and the DZO to enforce it. That was before “Group Members” and USPA became a trade origination for DZs. USPA was arrogant enough to think their rules were law. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
And where did you learn this interesting "fact"? Why do you think canopies are tested to a given speed and weight? You can blow a canopy up at a lower airspeed if you use enough weight or you can blow it up at a lower weigh if you use enough airspeed. To produce shock load of 5000 lbs. you can use 325 pounds at 225 mph or 200 pounds at 300 mph. But it takes a combination of both weight and speed. Before you give advise you should know what you are talking about. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

And if you deploy at terminal while tumbling and the canopy blows up how do you think your landing will be? There is an old saying that fits this situation. “If you are going to be stupid you had better be tough.” Overloading your last chance at staying alive is stupid. jmo My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

50 bucks a jump for coahcing?

Your preaching to the chior. Was the line where I said "to those of you who talk about a market economy... you are right...goodbye" typed in invisible letters? I understand the situation completely. I flew jumpers for 1.5 years. I had 1000 hours when I started flying turbines I have 1500 now. I have 350 turbine hours. What is your point? Yes I benefited, I never said I didnt. All im saying is that jumpers pay for what they get. Also, most jumpers have no idea how ill-trained and experinced their new turbine jump pilots are (by and large). Im not making any conclusions. I didnt end my post with "so you should pay pilots more and instructors less". Stop acting like I did. My post in written in black and white there are no hidden meanings. My point was that you were asked a couple of things and it appeared you were avoiding answering them. I didn’t “act” like you did anything. But you did say “Also, most jumpers have no idea how ill-trained and experinced their new turbine jump pilots are (by and large).” Which sees like a slam against most jump pilots. With 1500 total hours you should not be throwing rocks. You are in a service oriented field where your job is to provide service. If you expect to succeed lose the attitude. I know, I am impossible also. And I am also a pilot with a little more then 1500 hours. -
When skydiving is more than skydiving
mjosparky replied to veri's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It is never more than just skydiving. Some people just like to tell them selves it more. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
The altimeter is a MA2-30, it comes with its own light. Don't need no stinking glow sticks. I think I was checking the spot. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

50 bucks a jump for coahcing?
mjosparky replied to diverdriver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I find this hard to believe. I can't remember many days at the DZ in 30 years that I did not see some turd do something that was just plain dangerous to himself or others. Of course they always thought the rules were for the other guy not them. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

mjosparky replied to diverdriver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Of course he is impossible, always has been always will be. But the fact remains he brought up some issues that you have avoided addressing. Just how long did you fly jumpers? How many hours in turbine twins did you have when you started flying jumpers and how many now? It’s a 2 way street, DZO’s use pilots and pilots use DZO’s. They get cheap pilots and pilots get cheap hours. -
This guy jumped a brown and yellow striped canopy. He moved from So. Cal to Oz around mid 80's. When I was S&TA at Perris I signed him off for his Pro rating and he did 6 of the 10 landings with his canopy hooked up backwards. I made him do the other 4 with it hooked up right just to see if he could.

Disclaimer: This is just my opinion and have no test data to verify. I think we have gotten so good at protecting our main pin and bridle during freefall that at times we trap the bridle during deployment. Thus causing PC in tow or at least PC hesitation.

I would agree with you. If it were mine I would flat pack it. I used to jump a Sharpchuter, a large F-111 canopy, and always flat packed it. Never had a problem and it was much easier than Pro packing it. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

As an F-111 canopy gets older it will lose some ability to flare which is what most people are concerned with when jumping them. The design characteristics of the canopy do not change. While the descent rate may increase the “angle” of descent will remain constant. A great deal of the glide ratio you speak of is a result of a greater aspect ration common in 9 cell canopies. A little bit like the difference between a Cessna wing and a glider wing Hopfully he will learn the right things. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Chris, You are not the first to walk away for this sport and you won't be the last. The reasons are many and varied but mostly they are personal. The sport is intense mentally, physically and financially. It can be draining. Your time and numbers are more than most but it appears that you priorities have changed. A wife and child can do that. I understand your decision, maybe more than most, and wish you well in life without skydiving. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Night jumps suck. They are a stunt and I get paid for that.

I suspect that you, like others that complain about the stall point, are over loading the canopy. The canopy was not designed to be loaded much over 1 to 1 or 1.1. to 1. The material the canopy is made of has nothing to do with its “decent angle” or its “glide ratio”. Both are a product of canopy design and trim. You should avoid giving advice on things you lack knowledge of.

It would help if you fill in some of your profile so people would know a little about you. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

If you buy used be patient and find something that fits. First make sure it fits you and second make sure it fits canopies that are suitable for you abilities now not latter. If not it will be a sore spot you will have to deal with as long as you own it.

Brake fire on opening - what caused it and how to avoid ?

At 15 jumps anything that does not go right can be a major problem. How can you make such a statement without even knowing what the potential is? That is the kind of attitude that will allow you to get in way over your head and not even know it. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
