Now I've only been skydiving since 2000, but some folks who've been around a lot longer than I have often tell stories of how in the good ol' days it was common to pull at 1000, or lower. Pulling at those altitudes, in the day of the CYPRES equiped rig, usually results in a CYPRES fire, and the "CYPRES SAVE" stories. How many of todays 'saves' would not have resulted in a fatality if the rig were not CYPRES equiped? How many 'CYPRES saves' are actual saves, and not just fires? If you're going to go down this road then maybe it would be prudent to separate CYPRES fires, with CYPRES 'saves'. Going low didn't equate to death in the early days either, not automatically anyway. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Ahh... Must be talking about this one. Crossfire Incident Today For what it's worth, I currently jump a CF2 loaded at a little more than 1.5. I think it's a pretty nice ride, I am familiar with the issues surrounding the previous Crossfires and the way Icarus handled it. I just gotta hope that they've fixed this one, right? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

People thought that the original Crossfire was the greatest thing since sliced bread too, then we found out it wasn't. Positive public opinion doesn't necessarily make a product good, or safe. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

And some people realize that there may come a time when they aren't able to save their own lives, either through fault, or no fault of their own (please remember the thread that started this mess). These same people realize that a CYPRES or other AAD may give them a second chance when the time comes. Is that a bad thing? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I won't drive without a seatbelt. I don't feel that it makes me a safer driver, and I don't drive differently than if it wasn't there, but I do recognize the significant safety benefit that comes from using it. That said... Somehow I've allowed myself to be pulled into yet another CYPRES debate. I'm outta this one. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Jump 120 something was my first cutaway and reserve ride. Jump 470 something was my second reserve ride (no cutaway). Just over 500 jumps now. Fun fun fun. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Is dependency (by your definition) on an AAD a bad thing? I won't drive without a seatbelt, should I reconsider my involvement in driving? If someone choses to only jump an AAD equiped rig because they understand that there may be situations beyond their control where having an AAD may save their life, is that a bad thing? I don't think so. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

This reminds me of a story a while back of a town that wanted to ban the sale of single bottles of beer to curb littering. Their theory was that people were buying single bottles on their way home from work, drinking them in their car, and then throwing the bottles out the window. They figured that if people couldn't buy anything smaller than a six pack that they either (a) wouldn't buy beer on the way home from work, or (b) wouldn't drink it in the car and throw the bottles out the window (I never did figure that one out). Gotta love short sighted and reactionary legislation. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Since the USPA will no longer exist, they need a museum to keep their memory alive. Come on Ron, I thought you knew this stuff! - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I think that's a bad idea, tracking that far from that altitude is likely to put you into another groups skydive if you're not careful. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

You think that you could land that canopy in a tight spot NOW? You said that in no wind that the landing was a bit hairy. How do you think you're going to land that canopy when you find yourself off the dropzone and can't tell what the wind is doing? You've got 140 jumps right now, save money, get experience, and buy the hot-shit canopy next year. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

After reading Dan's post again, with your input, I think that you're probably right. Hopefully though, someone will come along and set us straight! - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Dan, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't each cell generate X amount of lift? If you remove two of the lift generating cells aren't you going to have a canopy that doesn't glide as well as the 9 cell? The way I read your statement, it seems as if there's no need for the extra 2 cells on a 9 cell canopy. Anyone with a better understanding of aerodynamics, I'd love to hear more on this. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

So, a responsible skydiver would only cutaway over an area that he was sure to find his canopy in? I know two people, who in the last two months, have lost canopies. Both skydivers were out looking for them right away, both are now in the market for new canopies. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I don't own a Vector or know how low you can go, I do have an idea though. Can you borrow various mains from around your DZ and pack them up into your container? That should give you a very realistic idea of what you can and cannot safely put into your container. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
-
Agreed. On the rare occasions that I do pack, I psycho pack my CF2 and it opens just fine. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Quade, maybe you can explain the data. Are there 34,000,000 voters in Califirnia? Did 34,000,000 turn out at any election? I'm not exactly sure what this data represents. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
