    Hooked turns?

How do you know they aren't? Usually fatalities are reported while injuries are often kept quiet. You need to understand that this sport can kill you. You need to understand that if you're in this sport for any amount of time you will lose friends, and worse, you'll watch friends die right in front of you. These rules apply to everybody, remember, you're someones friend too. Please don't kid yourself and think that there's anything even remotely safe about skydiving. Like Lisa said, you can do everything right and still die. Can you accept that? I'm not suggesting that you or anyone else shouldn't skydive, but it's important to know the risks. After you've thought about all the ways this sport can kill or mame realize that there are probably 2 or 3 dozen other ways you haven't thought of. Sorry if I sound harsh, but after Memorial Day weekend I'm a little sensitive when I think people don't fully understand what they're in for. - Jim
  2. Dude. You've got what, 10 jumps, maybe 20? I hate to break it to you, but you are in no position to be giving advice about canopy selection to a new jumper. Here's the standard, and probably best answer you'll get when concerned about what to get for your first canopy. Ask your instructors or the S&TA at your home DZ. The only ones who can supply you with a recommendation that means ANYTHING are those who have seen you jump, or more importantly land, and have had the chance to evaluate your skill level first hand, in person. - Jim

    Hooked turns?

Exactly what part of skydiving do you think is safe?
  4. That's Paul Eriksmoen, or JumpHog. He's one of the video guys out there at CK. It's actually two different Cobalts, a 105 and what I think is an 85. I'm sure he can provide some commentary. - Jim
  5. Just out of curiousity, what do you consider a stall to be? Why do you think that it's important to stall your canopy in order to land it properly? - Jim
  6. Philadelphia is closest, about 30 minutes from the DZ. Other options might be Newark which is about 2 hours north of CK and BWI which is probably 2 hours south of CK. Who's he jumping with? Roger? - Jim

    Grass stains

I'm with Andyman - Tide has always worked well, just rub it into the stain and wash like you normally would. If that doesn't work I've had good luck with a product called Zout as well. - Jim
  8. Did you see the BASE number there? The USPA does absolutely NOTHING for BASE jumpers. BASE jumpers also use a parachute to get back to Mother Earth unharmed. - Jim
  9. I don't remember the jump number, it was something under 100 though. I opened into pretty serious line twists and watched it get worse. I spent _way too long_ kicking out, so much time infact that when I got out of the twists I had enough time to turn onto final and land. I lost altitude awareness trying to get the twists out, I won't make that mistake again. - Jim

    New PD Website

Why? That's completely 'normal', in as normal as swooping gets. I see swoopers do that almost every weekend at my DZ. Maybe I'm just lucky.... - Jim
  11. Hmmm.... At an average price of $17.50 a jump you could afford a Cypres if you were willing to take two weeks off. Here's the simple math: * $17.50 * 50 = $875.00 I believe some folks are selling new Cypres' for ~$850.00 So, don't say you can't afford a Cypres, say you don't want to afford a Cypres. Even if you cut out 5 jumps each weekend and saved that money you could have a brand new Cypres in 10 weeks. Sorry, but in this case the "I can't afford it" excuse is lame. - Jim
  12. So I assume that you'll be taking a small vacation when your Cypres needs servicing at 4 & 8 years? Or will you continue to jump? - Jim
  13. You'll need service on it sometime. Think about it, you're taking a small computer out of an airplane (temperature changes), you're putting it in a place where it can come in contact with other helmets, other peoples body parts, risers, etc... you're pushing those two little buttons countless times. This little device takes a beating, sometime in it's life you're going to need customer service and L&B have mastered that department. When I lost mine on a skydive gone wrong a few months ago they were kind enough to give me a discount on another one. If I ever find myself in a place where I'm wanting a second audible you can bet it will a Pro-Dytter, L&B has earned my patronage. - Jim

    Bad USPA. Bad.

My renewal this year was done over the telephone, they lost the copy that I faxed them. I was not asked if they could include my name on a mailing list. Perhaps I should have been. - Jim

    Bad USPA. Bad.

It's not about the inconvenience of getting an extra email or piece of snail mail. It's about an organization that I'm practically forced to join taking my personal information and selling it to the highest bidder. What controls exist to determine who gets to buy this info? Will the USPA only sell to skydiving related companies? What's to stop them from selling their member list to your life insurance company? What about the company that provides your medical insurance? More importantly, what controls are in place to prevent the companies buying these lists from selling them themselves? I sent the USPA a letter asking them to remove me from the mailing lists, I also asked the questions I mentioned above. I don't wait until a problem is out of hand before taking corrective action. When I recognize a problem I take steps to fix it immediatly. But that's just me. - Jim
  16. Explain it here, I for one am interested in hearing all about it. - Jim
  17. That's essentially the same question you asked at the beginning of this thread. It's completely a matter of personal preference. If you ask a question like "Which fully elliptical has the (fastest turn|steepest dive|longest recovery arc|lightest riser pressure|best glide|most lift)" you'll get some answers. It all depends on what your definition of high-performance is. - Jim

    Bad USPA. Bad.

Apparently they stopped for at least a little while since they've opted to reinstate it. I have problems with people selling my info to a third party. Does the USPA have rules on who can purchase the list? Do they make the third party agree not to sell the list to someone else? I guess these questions will make it into my letter asking for removal from the list. In case anyone else is interested in writing the USPA and asking to be removed from the mailing list you can probably send your letters to uspa@uspa.org I'm sure someone can route your letter to the appropriate department. - Jim

    Bad USPA. Bad.

That may be, however I would have certainly checked a box that kept my private info private. I recently received a newsletter from another DZ that I have never been to. I wonder how they got my info. I guess it's time to write the USPA and ask nicely to have my name removed from the list. - Jim

    Bad USPA. Bad.

From the DZO Incoming Does this make anyone else mad? If I wanted my name and address sold to the highest bidder I would do it myself. I realize that they're hurting for money, but this is going to far. - Jim

    Performance

mod_perl is cool. I've never used mod_gzip, but I'm guessing that going to add significantly to your CPU problems. Anyone? - Jim
  22. Ask yourself, would it sound like an ad if other canopy designers were in here sharing things about their process as well? I wish they would...
  23. You call THAT the FrankenOtter? The name needs to be changed. That's not the FrankenOtter, that's a hybrid plane with a nice paint job, but it is NOT the FrankenOtter. Oh. And numbers: 0:3:0 - It was, understandably, a wierd subdued vibe around the DZ on Saturday. - Jim
  24. What? If he didn't have a Cypres he would be alive today? Sorry Bill, but I call bullshit. He would be alive today if he had a clue and pulled the proper handles in the proper order. In this case that would have been the silver, nothing more. Sorry to sound harsh, but you can't blame this on his having a Cypres. - Jim
  25. This is a problem. The AAD has the potential to cause problems as nasty as those it was meant to prevent. Students, everyone for that matter, should never 'forget it'. - Jim
