Rule #1: Don't go putting words into someone elses mouth, or in this case, if you're going to quote then do it. What Dan said was exactly this: I do not see "oh yeah, they suck". Why? Because it's not written there. What is there is that PD produces average to good quality canopies. Why is that a problem? Would you have been happier, perhaps, if he had used 'Cooker' or 'Fridays' as an example? Ignore the McDonalds references or replace McDonalds with the chain of your choice. What's important I think is that he did not put down PD. - Jim

Funny. I seem to remember that jumping is required for the canopy school.

I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't pull the slider down on my reserve. Damn noisy thing. - Jim

I jumped a navigator in AFF. It opened every single time and it never tried to kill me. My current canopy has tried to kill me several times. The navigator opens very nicely and has a great flare. When I flared at 30 feet, it landed me and I only broke one bone. I think everyone should get a Navigator. They're cool.

Manufacturers and customer service...[RANT]
Jimbo replied to GrumpySmurf's topic in Gear and Rigging
What's the matter with shipping you the canopy via the USPS? They take the box from point A to point B as easily and often less expensively than UPS (Who's customer service sucks more) and certainly less than FedEx. Let it go. It's nice to see that you won't hold this against them, though it appears that you are. Will the risers even hold hard inserts? Uh. Again. There's nothing wrong with the mail. The dealer could have shipped the canopy out overnight in the US Mail, or even second day. There's no gaurantee that UPS would have gotten it there sooner or even FedEx for that matter. What I do find interesting is that you chose to email the manufacturer when you are obviously so upset. A phone call probably would have been more effective - they could have heard how upset you are and it's a bit more personal. If you don't care enough to call I'm not surprised that they don't care enough to let you keep the canopy a bit longer. Get over it. - Jim -
I don't buy that. Are you absolutely certain that a larger canopy would have prevented this incident? It couldn't have been something as simple as operator error, could it? I realize that not everyone should be flying a highly loaded high performance canopy, but unless the canopy simply didn't do its job, or failed in a structural way then let's shift the blame for this accident off of the canopy and back onto the jumper where it belongs. - Jim

Just something to think about... I know that the Square[1-3] stores carry rigs from RWS, Infinity, and Canopies from Precision. Does Square[1-3] sell anything from Atair? The point here is that it could just as easily look as if you're bashing a manufacturer that sells a product you don't make a profit on.

What? That's absurd! Go back and make sure that that is the policy. It doesn't make much sense to me. If that is the policy then maybe consider going to a different DZ that will take you through the new procedures and get you signed off to BOC. - Jim

WooHoo! Great weekend for jumping. 0:13:0 I love skydiving.

Based on what? Price, performance, quality, name, reputation, size? I'm not suggesting you should blindly buy a PD, but that same logic says that you shouldn't blindly avoid them either. Before you start getting ideas, I do not currently jump a PD and I do not have plans to buy a PD anytime in the near future, but I also don't have plans _not_ to buy a PD. This is the Summer of the Demo for me. I'm going to make it a point to jump just about every canopy I can get my hands on. After I've jumped them all I'll make a decision based on price, performance, reliability, comfort, and probably a dozen other factors. I'm just curious how you came to that decision. - Jim

If you like to make your own choices then make _intelligent_ choices. When it comes time to get your next canopy demo canopies from _ALL_ the manufacturers and don't exclude PD just because you think you'll be too mainstream if you buy one. If, by the time you're looking, PISA or Atair has gained a large market share will you exclude them from your list just because they're popular? I wouldn't. - Jim

Yes. The secretary. We like her.

It's too bad you weren't there with us in CSS. The flour seemed like a good idea at the time, the idea was to thicken the whipped cream enough so that it would really stick. Unfortunately we used too much flour and it damn near killed her. I'm glad she survived, her landings have provided countless hours of entertainment! - Jim

What in the world makes you think you can request the 'flavor' of the pies? You'll get whatever's been laying around in the fridge for the past 8 months. I'm thinking it's going to be a mixture of rotten beer, relish, ketchup, mustard, mayonase, and just a little bit of whipped cream for good measure. I can't wait!

This was recently discussed in the Wingsuit fourm, I believe a typical wingsuit has about 9 sq/ft of wing. You do the math, but loading are _way_ up there. - Jim

That's where a bunch of people are so afraid that they feel the need to hold on to each other on the way down, right?

Mmmm.. I'd like a hummer right about now.

That's my plan. This is the Summer of the Demo for me. My plan is to jump a variety of canopies, both elliptical and semi-elliptical, in a variety of sizes. I foolishly bought my Safire after 1 jump on it with nothing else to compare it to. My Safire is a nice canopy, but I've become bored with it. This summer should be fun.

You missed two choices: * A modified tandem rig * A drouge - Jim

This has been covered before, but did you know that the Safire you are currently flying is probably _not_ 169 sq/ft as PD would measure it? If we use the 7% rule it's going to be a little closer to 157 sq/ft (on the PD scale). The point is, that the Sabre 2 170 probably seemed a little sluggish because it's actually a larger and therefore more lightly loaded canopy than the Safire you're currently jumping. Why not try the Sabre 2 150? You might be surprised at the results. For what it's worth, I currently jump a Safire 189. I put exactly one jump on a Sabre 2 190 when I decided it was too slow and sluggish for my liking. A few weeks later I decided to take the Sabre 2 170 for a few rides and I was impressed. The glide is superior to my Safire, responsiveness is superior, and flare - well, this is the easiest landing canopy I've ever jumped. - Jim

Would any one of those experiences be the one where they told you, flat out, that they indeed were going to release a Safire2? You've made the posts to prove you knew about it, don't try to deny it now. Just be a good adult and apologise. - Jim
-
Actually, it's pretty much a given with every thing, except maybe bread. Why did you expect the parachute industry to be any different? Especially from a somewhat progressive company like Icarus?
-
You're right. Maybe you could have, but what would you have been jumping until now? Rental gear? Do what every other skydiver does and sell what you've got now and buy new. Just curious, are you pissed at the company who manufactured your computer? - Jim
-
Well dude, get over it. What's the problem anyway? Does your canopy open, fly, and land well? What makes you think that the Safire2 will be 'better' than what you've got now? For all you know it might open, fly, and land like shit compared to your standards. As it was mentioned earlier, they might not have known when the Safire 2 was going to be released - it seems to me that they had their hands full with the Crossfire problems at around the time you were asking. - Jim
