  1. That's so true. I load my 189 at somewhere between 1.3 and 1.5 depending on how you decide to measure it and how much I've had for breakfast. Anyhow, in the 100 or so jumps that I've made this year almost all have been perfect stand up landings. It occured to me that I have been flying the canopy all the way until it's stopped, this has made an amazing improvement in my landings and more importantly my confidence. Like Bill says, fly the canopy until it's stopped. Stay safe - Jim
  2. Teams training for competition, making 12 to 15 loads a day, paying for a packer, a coach, and lodging at the local hotel could do it. Remember, there are more than just your weekend fun jumpers out there. - Jim
  3. This is unbelievable. In one week we've had: * 2 fatalities * 2 femurs (One at CK, one in Eloy) * 1 critically injured at CK * 1 jumper in Missouri who 'spiraled in and busted himself up' * another unknown from Atlanta Skydiving Center. Something in the air? I doubt it. Be careful everyone. Noone needs to lose anymore friends this week. - Jim
  4. We already know that it can done, that much is obvious. The better question is how? What forces work to make this happen?
  5. There's no guarantee that it won't be fatal with an AAD. Just thought that should be noted. - Jim
  6. Isn't one stop shopping a value add? There are quite a few who don't even know that his page exists, even by simply duplicating the data here I think you'd be doing a service to the community. - Jim
  7. Never been there, but is the answer Florida?
  8. Problems I see with that purchase: * The PD170 is an F111 canopy. They don't age well. Stay away. * The PD170 is an F111 canopy. They don't like to be loaded at greater than 1:1. Stay away I would keep looking, you can find something better and ZP for about the same price if you look hard enough. It might be easier though if you spent a bit more to get a bit more. Don't buy it, keep looking. - Jim
  9. The Silhouette is a ZP/F111 Hybrid. It was not designed to handle high wingloading. It does not land well when loaded. Been there, tried that. - Jim
  10. Shrubberies are my trade -- I am a shrubber. My name is Jim the Shrubber. I arrange, design, and sell shrubberies. Time to go jump.
  11. Except that for some strange reason I can't pull myself away from it. It's like looking at the accident, you know you shouldn't, but you do. http://www.consumptionjunction.com/ I should mention, it's probably not safe for work. I guess it depends on where you work.
  12. It's technique, most likely. The Safire _can_ be a difficult canopy to land. It took me almost a year on that canopy to figure out how to land it on my feet every time. Don't be discouraged. The Safire has a very deep or very long control range. When you want to stop that canopy you need to have the toggles all the way down. I use a long, continuous, stroke, starting at around 8 to 12 feet off the deck. Search the archives here in the gear and rigging fourm for more tips on landing the Safire, also look at the gear reviews. If after trying these new tricks you still find it difficult to land then drop a PM to Hooknswoop, he's been doing some work to Safires to increase or step up the flare. Stay safe, Jim
  13. Sweet! Let the crank calls begin! J/K. That anyone can get coaching from world class competitors in this sport is amazing. To those of you who have the resources, do yourselves a favor and take advantage of this great opportunity to learn from the best. - Jim

    How to slow my sit?

I've never seen it, but have heard from very reliable sources that those suits have been responsible for ending skydiving careers. The extra stress placed on the shoulders and arms causes/can cause damage to the joints. Just something to think about. - Jim

    Weekend Numbers

*:4:0 It was cold. Felt more like January than May.
  16. Bill, you said: When you know that what AvK said was this: He's already acknowledged that he is aware that reserve parachutes can malfunction. You even responded to this. What gives? AvK also said this, which makes some sense to me: Your reply was simply this: So, I have to ask. Is it your recommendation that in the event of a broken steering line that everyone try to land it with rear risers? Or should only those who have practiced this before try and land it, leaving those who have not practiced this procedure free to go for the silver? I do realize that this is a skill which could probably save some limbs and even lives, but again, to make the blanket statement that everyone should be landing any main with rear risers in the event of a broken steering line seems wrong. Or, are you not suggesting that? Because it seems like you are. Not trying to be argumentative, just trying to get this all sorted out. - Jim
  17. It's also a Chinese dynasty. I checked the Spanish-English dictionary, apparently 'Chao' is spanish for 'Ciao'.
  18. Maybe he meant to type Chaos, but forgot the s. It's possible.
  19. Like you, I look at my reserve as a last chance parachute, but makeing the blanket statement that everyone should land on rear risers in the event of a broken steering line is, in my opinion, wrong. It's a decision that each jumper will have to make when it happens. Some may not have the appropriate skills to do so, and there may be additional circumstances which make this dangerous. I recommend that they go for the reserve. But... that's just me. - Jim
  20. They finish with toggles. That's the important point here, since in the scenario mentioned above that's going to be impossible. Your example, while true, is not relevant to this discussion. - Jim
  21. Nice ride! What is that, and 1100? I want one.
  22. I disagree. What you may think of as a minor malfunction may be a disaster waiting to happen for others. Someone with 200 jumps on a lightly loaded Sabre could probably handle it, but maybe not. Someone with 2000 jumps on a highly loaded Velocity, well, that's a judgement call. I don't think it's fair to call it a minor malfunction, that really depends on the pilot. Would you want an AFF first jump student to land his 280 sq ft canopy on RR alone?

Wow Stacy, you've got your first stalker. You know what that means! Beer! I'm going to bed now, for real this time. Really, I am.
  24. A mechanical bull? This is gonna be fun.
  25. Too bad the outbound link won't be anywhere near that fast.
