How many times have you had to give the bowling talk to a student? I had to do it for my first time, and really really hated it. i'm wondering if its a very uncommon talk to give, or if I'll probably have to do it again in the future. also if you gave the talk before, how did you do it? Gently to ease them into your decision, or straight out to make it really clear? MB 3528, RB 1182

we used F111 manta 288s as our old student canopies.... very forgiving turns and flares, we watched some students pull 180 degree turns at 30 feet and land without breaking anything. also, the f111 made them easy to pack. the openings were ok, not great, but remember we were packing them for static line for the most part. so a long, slow opening is not the most desired. i learned static line, and had those kind of line twists on my first jump. I remember thinking, "the parachute keeps your head pushed forward like this? the jumpmaster said I would be able to look around, that liar!" then they untwisted themselves. MB 3528, RB 1182

Skydiving without an Altimeter
bch7773 replied to dgskydive's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've jumped without any kind of altimeter once or twice. Since i don't use an audible, and lots of times I'm doing students, it would be stupid of me to not wear one. p.s., an audible altimeter counts as an altimeter, so you are still wearing an altimeter. MB 3528, RB 1182 -
wrong... dropping the bomb on the emperor, remember in japan the emperor was a god, would only incite them to never give up. So we would have to use a lot more bombing to finally get them to surrender. those cities were important industrial and transport hubs for military supplies. and if you are so sure one bomb would have stopped them and the second was unncessary, why did they not surrender during the 3 days between the bombs? by dropping those atom bombs, the US saved not only hundreds of thousands of US military lives, but hundreds of thousands of japanese citizens... who would have died fighting in their streets, or in bombing or artillery by US. Goldilocks and the Three Rings

well, you do need some slack in the lines otherwise your Dbag won't go into the container. also, if you rotate your bag after you put it in the container, you will need an extra 6" of lines or the bag won't rotate. MB 3528, RB 1182 -
If you get significantly below the group, i.e. you are pretty sure you can't make it back up and dock before breakoff, then start tracking perpendicular to jumprun. the ideal thing to do, in my mind anyways, would be to track a little bit away, maybe 100 ft, then turn and watch them, while also looking up and around to make sure someone else didn't go low and do what you did, another group drifting into your area, etc. and at breakoff time, turn and track again. exactly. skydiving isn't in there because its a very small cause of death among 99% whuffos. its kinda hard to die of something you haven't done. MB 3528, RB 1182

the truth is, nobody wants to spend the time and effort explaining something thats already been explained a dozen times. especially when accessing that new information is easy and takes 10 seconds in a search. heres a couple to get you started http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=162816;search_string=full%20face%20open;#162816 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1575152;search_string=full%20face%20open;#1575152 MB 3528, RB 1182

thor the only problem you'll have in a lake is crappy vis, and little bluegills biting any bare skin you have showing. yeah those little crappy fish that you caught as a kid are like piranhas, but with no sharp teeth. ooo and watch out for the thermocline! and i've done a few dives with sharks and they were a lot more scared of us then we were of them. Everytime we got within 10 feet of them they would swim away, but then they would swim back after a a few seconds to they could get back to their sleeping area. then they would see us still there, and they would swim away again... and repeat over and over. sharks aren't very smart. I've had the same problems too, and one thing i've found is to anticipate the next point and adjust your fallrate the second grips are broken. I used to just dock on the base and stay in some arch, and when we broke, suddenly i was going too fast. so I learned to dearch as we break grips, and i stay right up there. MB 3528, RB 1182

Skylord and the Hop 'n Pop Deal with Each Other
bch7773 replied to skylord's topic in Safety and Training
i think its a normal thing for AFF grads to be terrified of their 5k hop n pop. For S/L students, their 1st Freefall (6th jump) is at 4k. And most S/L students look forward to it a LOT. MB 3528, RB 1182 -
I'd get it packed in the UK before you come. trying to get it packed at WFFC will probably mean you'll have to pay an extra "boogie packing fee" to the rigger... basically they charge more at a boogie. MB 3528, RB 1182

Information about jumping large AC
bch7773 replied to Crzy_Canuck's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
if you ever get to jump a larger plane... thers one answer for you that is correct no matter what type of plane.... ask others! ask the pilot, a LO, or the staff what the proper procedures are. maybe find a coach or a nice person to go up on your first jump out the big planes and show you the ropes. Thats how i learned. MB 3528, RB 1182
