Then why do you think your ways should be forced on us? See, that's not so rare here. My father taught me about weapons when I was quite young. He started me with a BB gun at about 6 with supervision and around 8 without. We made regular trips to ranges after that, and in fact STILL go shooting when I am at home. And I don't carry a weapon either. I however respect the right of people to carry if they choose. My Dad is almost 70, my sister weighs 105 pounds, my Mom is 60 with a bad hip. THEY are not as able as I am to defend myself and are MUCH more likely to be targeted than I am. And I blame your society for not teaching your kids about these items and instead regulated them almost out of existence. If your parents had actually taught about gun safety, then maybe your govt would not have needed to pass laws taking them from the citizens. But notice *I* am not trying to push my views on *YOU*. A small difference, it IS legal here. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Still, you support one area of govt intervention while crying about another. This is the problem. It is like the old pilots saying...Noise up to and including mine is just fine. Anything above mine or yours is unacceptable. You support regulation only on the items you don't care about. That, is a double standard. Why is trying to make money a bad thing? I will readily admit that people that speculated should lose their investment. Just like I have no problem with people who bought the bonds losing their investment...Or those that packaged them getting fired with no golden parachute. Who gets to make that call? I think if you bit off more than you can chew, it is no ones fault but your own. The same with the investors, the same with the employees that made those loans. Do I think the Govt should encourage home owners to work with banks for reasonable rates? Yes. And I think it is really in the banks best interest. Do I think the Govt should force the banks? No. It is a dangerous step when we allow the govt to override contracts between parties. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Still it could be done. Just like criminals could buy weapons. But knives are still cheaper. John, the problem is you seem to agree on limits to OTHER peoples freedoms. Most have agreed with you that nutters should be prevented from getting guns. The problem is you feel it is fine to step on everyone's rights to prevent it...While at the same time lamenting the same issue with one of your hobby's. The "Bailout" - Do You Support the $700B - $1.1Tr Package
Ron replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
Like it? No. Realize that something might need to be done? Yes. People keep claiming that free markets do not work. Well, a bail out is not a free market. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334 -

Dave, I almost agree 100% with you. We differ in the investment portion. Why would you protect a person who wanted to buy a bigger home than they could afford, but punish the guy that tried to invest in some bonds? I agree that we need to be more careful in what we invest in...But why protect people who tried to buy more than they could afford, but punish anyone else that tried to better their life? The problem, as see it, is they only way to make sure people buy what they can afford is either: 1. The banks quit making stupid loans. Or people wise up and quit asking for them. 2. The Govt states what amount you can buy given your income. Wanna guess which one I agree with? "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

I disagree. If you teach them at an early age about firearms, they are less likely to mishandle them. Now, nutters like this are always going to exist....And as the story said, he also had explosives with him. So, blame the person, not the tools. Or from your own source. You know where he admits he can't reproduce his data. Lots of them...He STILL says Bush mismanaged the war. He still supports stem cell research. Things like his vote on the ease dropping bill says otherwise. He was against it...But he voted for it in the end. Give him time. He is still the same man he was...Politics is mostly BS...And I think he learned from his last experience. I agree. It will be a shame if McCain loses due to Bush. But it is a real possibility. The election this year (like 04) is the Dems to win or lose. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

And less in other years...Heck the record shows that Obama voted almost 40% with Bush in 07 and almost 50% with Bush in 06. Plus the record shows Obama has voted 97% with the Dems ALL the time. McCain has a much lover average of voting with Republicans. If you are looking for a less partisan President....It is not Obama, and the records prove it. He is still the same man. Still has the same core values. Still is a thorn in Bush's side. But, I have given you several examples where McCain has gone directly against Bush. That alone is enough to dispatch the BS "McSame" lines. Yes, McCain moved right to get his nomination...Just like Obama swung left and is now trying to swing back to the center. EVERY candidate does that. He learned from his last run and didn't make the same mistake this time. If he had acted the same as he had last time, Romney would be the candidate. Last year Obama voted 40% with Bush and 49% with him in 06. Not really: McCain Fiengold bill was pretty much hated by Republicans...McCain supported it anyway. McCain opposed torture...Bush hated him for that. McCain supports federally financed embryonic stem cell research. Bush does not. McCain has made several statements that Bush mismanaged the war. That's not what Bush thinks. McCain even contemplated running with Kerry, Bush ran against Kerry. McCain voted against Bush's energy bill, ""This bill does little to address the immediate energy crisis we face in this country," he said in a statement his Senate office issued at the time. "The handouts to big business and oil companies are irresponsible and will be disastrous for the people of Arizona. I cannot in good conscience vote to pass legislation that does not adequately address issues related to energy efficiency, security, and energy independence." On the final vote on the bill, McCain was one of 26 senators who voted against it. (Hillary Clinton also opposed it while Barack Obama voted for it.) Bush hated that...Notice Obama voted FOR it. During the Repub campaigns the other candidates criticized McCain for not supporting Bush enough. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/co...icle4629087.ece Sorry, there are similarities, but there are also glaring differences. Just like they laugh at you when you try to claim Obama is qualified to be President, but Palin is not qualified to be VP. Oh, I get it..It is fine to use quotes from people when it HELPS you, but not when it HURTS you...Sorry, I didn't know only your quotes should be counted. You try to parade out a business person who said that Palin could not run her company....But added that she does not think the others could eitherl....But that's all you needed to hear. But a POLITICIAN that has run for the VP slot, and the CURRENT POLITICIAN that is running for the VP slot both make statements about a POLITICIAN not being ready or the best choice and that should be ignored.... WTF?!?!?!?!? Your position and comment makes no logical sense. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

That's your plan with the McSame crap. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

No, that's what you want it to say since you can't discuss the actual issue. Your current VP candidate AND one of your last VP candidates has said Obama is not ready and McCain would be better. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

No, it is a great reply since it was a politician saying another politician was not qualified about something they know about. Your example would be like the word of a 4 way guy that a freeflier is not qualified to 4way. My example is a 4way guy saying another 4way guy is not qualified. You just can't/won't accept it since it hurts your candidate. But not even you can claim that your current VP pick and former VP pick is not qualified to make that assessment....Well, you have tried anyway. It is a great reply. You have a politician saying he does not think someone from his own party is ready to lead. You just want to ignore it since it hurts your candidate. "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

Well don't forget that Biden didn't think Obama was ready to lead and that it would be an honor to serve with or against McCain. And Biden also thinks that HRC was a better choice than him as well for VP. And that Lieberman thinks McCain is a better choice. No offense...But have you read his own website? He lists line item after line item of taxing (them) and then spending or giving (to us). One item is his proposed windfall tax on energy companies that he would then give rebates of 1,000 to families. The problem is that the last time this was tried, by Carter, it failed and actually increased our dependence on foreign oil. http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/1168.html "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

And a great question. Some have touched on it and were mostly correct. Assault Rifle: The Army defines it as, "a short, compact, selective-fire weapon that fires a cartridge intermediate in power between submachinegun and rifle cartridges." The real key being "select fire". Select fire: Means it can be either full auto (or burst) or semi auto. You can 'select' the fire mode. Assault Weapon: Really it used to be the same thing...However, the definition has been taken over to mean a weapon that looks like an assault rifle, or is based on an assault rifle but is only semi automatic. The Assault Weapons Ban in 94 was worthless in that it went after weapons that "looked" evil. Some of the features that would get a weapon on the list. Had to have a detachable magazine AND two or more from the list below: 1. A folding stock. (Not a big deal) 2. Pistol grip. (But the same mechanics with a normal stock was fine) 3. Bayonet mount. (When was the last time you heard a gang banger yell, "Fix bayonet's homies!") 4. A flash suppressor. (Again...Not a big deal.) 5. Can't have a grenade launcher. (Could not have one anyway since it is an NFA item...Worthless.) So the AWB really did nothing since all it did was outlaw weapons that "looked" dangerous. You could shoot the same caliber, same mechanics in a weapon that looked "traditional" and be fine. Machine Gun: A weapon that fires more than one round with a single pull of the trigger. It can include full auto that will empty a magazine, or a burst fire that will fire more than one, but has an upper limit. Typically this is a 3 round burst, or three rounds per pull of the trigger. It should be noted that even parts that can be used to convert a weapon into a machine gun can themselves be classified as a machine gun. Machine guns are normally referred to as weapons that can fire more than one round AND fire a rifle cartridge like 7.62, or 5.56. Sub Guns normally fire PISTOL sized rounds like 9mm.
