PD Statement on larger Optimums (160-253)
PhreeZone replied to PhreeZone's topic in Gear and Rigging
LATEST NEWS per UPT! PD has announced that the larger size Optiums (160, 176, 193, 218, 235, 253) have received their TSO certification from the FAA and they will start shipping them on Friday (5/21) Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com -
Yes and no. If you want to have a full length video in HD you will need the storage abilities of the BD disk. If you are looking at doing it at the typical skydiving video length of 10-12 minutes then you could just burn it as an AVCHD disk on a regular DVD player and it will contain HD footage only playable in a Bluray player. tv's that won't work with a universal remote. WTF?
PhreeZone replied to TrophyHusband's topic in The Bonfire
You are just not getting good enough Universal remotes. Look at the Harmony series by Logitech. The have a database online that will let you download the exact sequence for just about any electronic device that uses IR for its control. The remote will control every device in your AV rack and then you can custom program it if it does not have the exact match also. Hell, the remote can also be set to control things over radio frequency so you can control your ceiling fans, lights and just about any device in the house with one. Looking for a place to jump in WV/OH area, Please help!
PhreeZone replied to xephyrin's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Closest dropzones to your location are: West Virginia Skydivers in Lesage, WV Tri-State Skydivers in South Point OH Skydive Columbus in Carrol Ohio (near Lancaster/Columbus) All 3 of those locations are 65-75 miles from your city. All three of these locations fly a Cessna 182 that will hold 4 skydivers total and a pilot and typically will go to 9000-10000 feet at the max. All offer Tandem skydives and some offer other training methods also if you want to do Static line or Advanced Freefall methods but you need to look at each DZ to see what they offer. Outside of that distance it really opens up and you end up having a lot more options. In the 120-150 mile option you can pick between about another dozen Dropzones. All are located closer to Cleveland or Cinci/Dayton and have anywhere from a Cessna 182 that holds 4 jumpers to Cessna Caravans that hold 14-17 jumpers and go to 13000 feet. The larger planes are nice if you are jumping with a group and you all want to jump at the same time instead of having to wait on the ground while only one person at a time jumps. My recommendations based off my experiences at the dropzones in that 120-150 mile range would be Aerohio if you go towards the Cleveland area or StartSkydiving.com if you go towards the Cinci area. That still is not HD, that is Standard Def. If you want to edit HD use a computer or spend a LOT of money on a HD capable linear board. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

We put the students in jumpsuits on just about every jump. Its just easier to not to worry around getting grass stains on their clothing. It also makes me a bit more comfortable that I am not going to have their shirts blowing around in freefall. With about 15-20 total suits in 4 sizes we can fit just about every student that can jump and be able to run the plane non-stop all day. Having suits with out grippers makes it easier to have them walk. I've taken people in street clothes and would do it again but to me it looks far more professional on video if they are in a jumpsuit. Nothing looks worse then someone unintentionally showing skin on their video because their shirt came out in freefall. Another situation I try to avoid is having my students walk away from the DZ with heavy grass stains that might stain their clothing, that just leaves a bad memory for them. The worst is the road rash on girls that wear short shorts and have their thighs touch the ground first. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Yep, and to work AVCHD in CS4 it has to be registered version, the demo does not include support for it. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

You can only run the camera in one mode at a time. You can either put it in video or stills mode but not both at the same time. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

On the UPT/RWS test you take for the rating it asks: 20. Who may do RW with a tandem pair? Which four instructions must you give the relative worker? 21. Which requirements must a photographer meet before he can film tandem? Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

An Important Notice to USPA Members
PhreeZone replied to 3331's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I thought that the security issue was addressed that you had access to user names and passwords that would not have been used for the production database. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com -
Thanks Mike, I wanted to make sure since I thought the requirements from the FAA were that any manufacturers instructions must be complied with so that is kinda how at least with tandem gear makers they can make you have an FAA medical if you continue to use their gear since you need to have the rating for the FAA to make the jump legal, correct? I know someone that has lost their FAA medical and wants to do tandems so is looking for a loophole to let them but I am not aware of any that would let them on a not USPA DZ since UPT, Jumpshack and Strong all require one for a rating to be valid. Since FAR 105.45 requires that the Instructor is trained in the use of the equipment having a current rating is the only way that requirement is met is my limited understanding. Is any of that information not correct? Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

Someone walks up to me and just tells me to swap the canopies in a rig? I'm just chopping it at the 3 rings, swapping and hooking them back up. 5 minutes and its ready to go for free. Someone actually tells me the canopies were sold and need put on the different risers and then hooked up again... I do the entire canopy transfer to a card and to the other risers and both canopies are now on new risers... I might charge them Lunch for the 15-20 minutes of my time if it was in the middle of a day at the DZ and I was missing a jump for it. You are trying to make the rigger in the wrong and its more of a gray area then that. If they were not told this was a permanent swap nothing at all is out of the ordinary. If they were told it was a sale of canopies then they should have moved the risers, its all about how much info the rigger was given to do the work. Work visa's for skydiving are almost non existent since there is not a demonstrated lack of citizens to fill the job openings. Talk to the DZ's first to see if they would even be willing to hire you with out a work visa. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

How does that match with the manufacturers requirements to have the medical prior to getting the rating for that type of rig in some cases? UPT requires a Class 3 or higher to have the rating for example. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

New Sony NEX-5 & NEX-3 - Micro four-thirds camera
PhreeZone replied to nigelh's topic in Photography and Video
Canon had that for a long time with the LX2 series of cameras and it was successful but they went back to the fixed lenses for their cameras. I hope DSE can help explain why since I never understood that. I would love to put my L glass to use on video too... Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com -

Not even close to how things will play out is my prediction. The Tier 3 backbone providers still have a long way to go until they have started to run out of bandwidth for customers (resellers) to sell. Take the transoceanic undersea cables as an example. A lot of the bandwidth on those is not currently being used, its being bought in reserve for spikes on the Tier1 and Tier 2 users so that all carriers will still have high speed. Despite the lines being used only at 30% bandwidth capabilities there are still companies that see large amounts of profit in installing all new undersea high speed lines to supplement the existing lines. Universities and businesses are craving higher and higher speed connections for things like video conferencing, audio, computer research and hundreds of other uses and they are willing to pay for it. What additional overhead? There is no changes to how things will occur in the future then how they occur today. This is preventing issues from arising by saying all packets are equal and you are not allowed to shape packets from a certain host to have a higher or lower priority level then any other site. Implementing tier delivery policies is nothing be additional resources on the telco's site to administer, bill, sell, etc. Net Neutrality is preventing companies from being place into basically a blackmail situation where the Telcos is able to tell Google/Amazon/Hulu/Netflix/Skype/etc that unless they pay X amount a given day/week/month/gig/terra then packets that contain their content or from their host that travel over that carriers lines will be altered with a lower priority and will only be delivered after every other packet is delivered for each frame. For businesses this will now make them have to pay the money to make sure that all of their investments in IP phones, video conference and even cloud based solutions will continue to be at a high enough delivery rate to ensure the applications still work. This is just another way to get money out of all parties since if Amazon has to pay more money to keep their VOD able to stay working on all the major carriers then the cost is just passed back to the consumer and then all consumers lose. Ultimately the fight is not going to be over the end point lines but the core connections and the FCC will have the courts on their side when its ruled that the carriers are not allowed to control or shape the packets as they relate to source or content since this is no different then the old phone carriers putting calls onto poor quality lines if its destination was on another carriers physical lines. The ONLY argument that I have seen that makes me lean slightly towards the Telcoms on this is that they are now looking at future upgrades that are going to cost hundreds of millions if not billions to do things like Fiber to the curb to every house and high speed to all the rural areas and outside the monthly consumer subscription fees they are not able to pass the cost back to the company that uses more bandwidth then other companies so its less incentive for them to press forward with major upgrades. Fiber is still a huge cost and not many people that have it as an option are jumping to it over other choices like cable due to the higher cost so unless the market for Video on Demand, Streaming media and things like that pick up then there are no major upgrades until this happens. My feelings are still on the side of the consumer on this and I'm 100% for net neutrality. Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703961104575226583645448758.html FCC chairman basically issued a statement that he is going to evoke some older rules meant to regulate phone companies to make sure that the net stays neutral for bandwidth for all providers. This is a huge win for consumers since now ATT or other broadband carriers can't slowdown traffic from other companies sites to make the other applications slower then their own. Carriers are going to make a valid case that this makes further investments into their networks less profitable but Net Neutral is best for all consumers. You clearly missed who its being marketed towards.. the marketing is going to be towards the Gen Y/Gen Z groups not the older crowd. I predict you'll have a ton more people asking about flying a wingsuit while base jumping before their first jump since that is all they want to do after seeing proximity flying and some of the visuals that are occurring with that. Excellent story along with the good visuals from the camera crew to be able to back it up. I saw Lew in the video, I think OB was doing some too so they need some props also since otherwise with out the video the story would not have had the heart it had.
