Hey Skymama, I have never done a raft jump either. I was just looking in Parachutist magazine and this American Boogie is sounding all like fun. This may just be one of those "need to squeeze this one in" type of boogies. I'm hoping to meet you and that we get in on some good jumps together. Maybe we can do our first raft dive together. What do your parents think of your skydiving?
NoShitThereIWas replied to andy2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My mom has done 4 tandems. The first was on her 50th birthday. I am waiting for dad to come out and do AFF. Dad may need some coersion. I am going to be down in Dallas this summer visiting him. I'm hoping to teach him the FJC and take him skydiving. Both of my parents are very supportive. Dad lives down in Texas and just tells me to: "Make sure you check your shit." I have seen mom act really bizarre and irrational a couple times on my way out the door to the DZ. I know that when they hear about skydiving fatalities or friends of mine lost in the sport they feel uneasy. We all die sometime is my philosophy. Try and get as much out of life as you can. Do the best you can to survive. I try to share my experiences with my family so they understand more about who I am and why skydiving is important to me. I let them know that there are risks associated with everything in life and that eventhough skydiving is considered risky, I tend to try and stay in the "low risk" category of skydivers. Meaning I abide by the safety rules as much as possible. Being a single mom makes me wonder if I should have a Will. Does anyone else kind of young with one or more kids have any input here? So in conclusion to this topic, I would hope that by exposing our parents and family to the sport, they would not think the sport of skydiving is reckless. It is just another form of self expression. It is artistic in its own way and does assume risk and/or danger. Knowing and understanding the dangers gives us respect that we should take with us on each and every jump. My calendar this month has this amazing picture of a windsurfer with a huge white water wave about 10 times his size coming in behind him. The quote says: "Courage- A perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental WILLINGNESS TO INDURE IT." ~William T. Sherman Anyway, I think those of us who skydive are some of the luckiest people on the planet. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say." -

Jumprunner, I recommend you read the Body Pilot book written by Carl Nelson. He makes several references to the prop blast and exit transition. Maybe after reading it you will understand. Blues, Jen Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say." -
Final draft of Physics term paper

So excuse me Matthew for not coming close to comparing to your obvious genius IQ. No I never claimed to be a genius, just someone who learned some interesting things about physics and skydiving that have helped me to communicate more effectively with my students. My instructor seemed to like it which is reflected in the grade, I learned a bit, read some interesting books on it and some people on this website were a big help ... Some people wanted me to post it so they can see what I wrote and I thought maybe it would help others understand more. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Jess, Vickie and Nicoley Rodriguez. SMBs staff is mostly a family oriented one. Most of us have one kid. Jess is a lot of fun to work with, always fair with his employees and handles situations well under pressure. He has taught me a lot about video, accuracy and AFF. He is an open minded DZO, will generally cater to the public and he is the kind of person who makes things happen. It is often that you may hear him tell jumpers and customers. Hey, We're here for you ... Later we are just here. Not to mention Vickie and Nicoley rock too! Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

Final draft of Physics term paper
NoShitThereIWas replied to NoShitThereIWas's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Senior year, I was actually taking a college General Physics 2B class. The assignment was to give an oral presentation and a written paper at least 5 pages long on anything we wanted as long as we could apply some aspect of physics that we learned about in the class to it. I just decided I thought it would be cool to understand the physics of gravity, air resistance and body flight. I also thought it might be interesting to whuffos. But most people actually did do their topics on some kind of sport but there were a few other ones like radar guns, MRIs, airplanes ... So this isn't your super high tech physics, this is just like physics for life science majors physics. Alrighty then ... Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Final draft of Physics term paper
NoShitThereIWas replied to NoShitThereIWas's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Okay, so there are a few of you who wanted to read the final draft of my term paper on the physics of skydiving. For anyone hoping to gain more of a "physical" perspective, I learned a great deal from researching this topic and found much of what I read and learned very helpful as basic knowledge to instruct students when trying to explain how skydiving and canopy flight works. Many of the DZ.commers helped to provide me with information and where to find it. So thanks to all of you who led me in the right direction and helped me to become way more knowledgeable on this topic. I hope by posting this I can give back to the forums to any and all who are interested in learning more about our sport in a scientific sense. Anyone wishing to add any comments or knowledge to the thread, please feel free to share. I did not go into too much detail with Bernoulli in this paper as I felt that is more of a topic for a different research paper. Enjoy Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Wow, I can't believe she was actually believeing all of that! It is amazing the things whuffos will believe. That is one of the things that makes this sport so much fun. As we go on and experience more, we conquer more of our fears of the unknown and we learn more about a survival skill. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." No its not actually... If you ever go to Vegas, go to the Cesars Palace mall. I forget what they call the mall, but inside there is this coffee/gelato/ice cream place. They have the best tiramisu ice cream and gelato I have ever had. It is to die for, Plan on waiting 10 minutes fir your ice cream but it is well worth the wait. Okay, I just went down to check and see what it is called: Dolci frutta Hard Chocolate Shell. Trust me on this one, you can't go wrong ... I think you can buy it in your produce section . Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

You know, I was telling Chop CHop about this stuff that I was making chocolate covered strawberries with ... you put it in the microwave and it melts. Then you stir it up and let it cool off a little bit and then you can spread it on whatever you want, and then when it totally cools and hardens. (I said hardens). HeHeHe Anyway, I thought I'd share that with you if you ever get to cover a girl in chocolate. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

I ate enough chocolate covered strawberries yesterday to feel guilty for a whole year Candy is not an option at this point in time Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

I check my rig but make sure it is in a protective container like a plastic tub. Then I put the rest of my gear in there also. Easy to carry/push and no need to drag it through security onto the plane. I prefer to travel light without carrying a lot of stuff onto an airplane. The benefit of carrying it with you though is that you don't know what whuffos know about your gear. It is somewhat alien to some of them and if they go touching it and poking at it that could be a bad thing. I have only had that experience once but I did not have it in a protective container that time ... Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

Okay, jumping into the winery before or after eating strawberries covered in white chocolate and a bottle of almond champagne? HeHeHe Maybe, we have a skydiving picnic. So we lay out a blanket and set it up as our target. Leave some lawn chairs out next to the blanket ... Then we have the strawberries and champagne there waiting for us chilled in an ice chest. We jump and bet on who is going to land closest to the target. Whoever loses the bet has to rub the other person's feet while they get to sit back and enjoy the strawberries and champagne. Wait a second, what if I lose? (and yoou have your PRO rating) Hmmm. Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires." Sting: "Be yourself no matter what they say."

You know, I used to work in the bakery at the Cheesecake Factory but did before they came out with the Dulce de Leche Cheesecake. It sounds yummy, what is it? I have to also agree with the cookies and cream ice cream and have never heard of the 3-Leches cake with Bailey's Irish Cream. WHere can I find one of those??? Roy Bacon: "Elvises, light your fires."
